I had terrible heartburn for my entire pregnancy also, but I also had Reflux before I got pregnant. As far as at home rememedies, milk worked well for me, lots and lots of milk. On a side note, I gave birth to my daughter 3 weeks early and she was 10lbs. 9oz. with a crazy amount of hair. The people in the room all commented as she was crowning, wow, look at all that hair! To which my response at that moment was lets get her out and talk about how much hair she has after!!! Best of luck to you and congratulations!!  (+ info)

Heartburn?

I am a 15 years old boy, and I have a problem with my stomach. It feels like a bad hearburn after I ate something the night before, and it's very uncomfortable, it lasts at least through the whole night.
This heartburn feeling comes about every few months, do you know why?
----------

Do you mean you eat at bedtime? It's not good to eat within an hour of going to sleep because the increased acid in your stomach can give you problems when you lay down to sleep. Caffeine, chocolate can cause increased acid production too.

Are you drinking enough water with your meals? It's important to clear your esophagus after having solids, especially if you tend to get heartburn. When you get that heartburn, sip on water to try to dilute the acid.

When you feel the heartburn coming on at night, take a Mylanta or Maalox and try sleeping up on 3 or 4 pillows, or elevate the head of your mattress on some pillows, or elevate the head of your bed on some blocks or books. That can help prevent the stomach acid from splashing up into your esophagus.

Some people have a weak valve at the top of their stomach. That allows acid to splash up into the esophagus, causing heartburn. That is known GERD. If you allow that to continue you could have problems with ulcer and even cancer of the esophagus. You should tell your doc about those symptoms so he/she can order something for you. At age 15 you need your tetanus booster, so when you go to the doc to get that, mention your heartburn. Good luck!  (+ info)

How come I frequently get heartburn after eating a turkey sandwich?

I'm 24 female and frequently get heartburn after eating homemade turkey sandwiches for lunch. Nothing crazy turkey, wheat bread, mayo. Most sites online say that is one of the best meals to eat to NOT get heartburn. Any explanation?
----------

People are all different. If turkey sandwiches give you heartburn - don't eat them. Also, you might try taking a Prilosec daily for a couple of weeks and see if that helps your problem.  (+ info)

Heartburn making me sick, any tips to ease it till i see my doctor in the morning?

It seems to build up till i am sick and then it eases. Its worse when i lie down. Got over the counter tablets for heartburn, they are not helping much.
Got doctor in morning.
Thanks in advance.

Be careful with whatever you eat. Fried foods and fruit drinks like orange juice can cause heartburn. OTC antacids can help if used as recommended. Pizza, alcoholic beverages, carbonated drinks, onions, etc can cause problems in baby boomers. This is natural; however, if you are young, maybe the source of your heart burns is your emotions.
Good luck.  (+ info)

Is it normal to have get horrible heartburn several times a day and night while pregnant?

I'm 26 weeks pregnant and I know ofcourse heartburn is something that goes along with pregnancy but it feels like within the last week or so it has kicked into high gear. I've been getting it several times a day and night. I take tums to deal with it, but I'm getting a little nervous maybe I'm taking them more then I should. Is it normal to have it this much?
----------

Unfortunately heart burn is one of the normal NON-wonderful parts of pregnancy, the hormones that cause help ur baby grow also help froduce more acid, which inturn gives u more heartburn and gas, u don't have to worry about taking tums they are safe, but, talk to your doctor, he can prescribe a liquid ant-acid, it lasts long and will help sooth ur heartburn quicker :) also try sleeping with ur pillow propped :) good luck :)  (+ info)

How to pick good bed wedge for heartburn problems?

I am trying to buy a bed wedge which are supposedly good for easing heartburn. I've read that the minimum recommended elevation is 6-8 inches. The bed wedges come in 8, 10 and 12 inches elevation. It seems to me that the elevation should somehow depend on your height, but I am not sure. I am about 6 ft. Does anyone know which bed wedge is best? Thanks for any help!
----------

Some great summaries of studies regarding bed wedges can be found at BedLift.com - See this:
" Using continuous monitoring of pH (acidity) within the esophagus among several alternative positions at rest, this randomized clinical trial detected a significant decrease in the time that the esophagus was exposed to highly acid conditions when using a foam wedge to elevate the head, and also showed a decrease in the time necessary for the acid to be cleared. Interestingly, use of a wedge-shaped mechanism was significantly more effective than elevation through the use of standard bed blocks."

and
" METHODS: The subject was placed supine on a standard hospital bed. The head of the bed was then elevated to 30 degrees according to 2 protocols: (1) supine for 10 minutes without leg elevation alternating with 10 minutes of side-lying, or (2) supine for 10 minutes with leg elevation at 10 degrees alternating with side-lying every 10 minutes. Body displacement and mean sacral interface pressures in both protocols were compared by using repeated measures analysis of variance.

RESULTS: The 30-degree head-up position with 10-degree leg elevation significantly reduced the amount of body displacement at the acromion compared with no elevation of the legs. There were no significant differences in mean sacral interface pressure in either position. C

CONCLUSION: Leg elevation at 10 degrees in the 30-degree head-up position was effective for reducing body displacement at the acromion; it was not effective for reducing sacral interface pressures."  (+ info)

How do I get rid of a heartburn/acidy feeling in my throat naturally?

I don't usually get heartburn, but for the past 4 or 5 days, whenever I eat, I get a weird heartburn sensation that starts to creep up my throat. It's worse when I lie down. I don't like to take acid reducer since my friend told me your stomach just makes more acid to compensate later. Is that true? What's the best way to get rid of heartburn naturally?
----------

Sure, just a little sodium bicarbonate in water will do the trick and be all natural at the same time, just like salt is all natural. Sodium Bicarbonate is the active ingredient in over the counter things like Tums or Rolaids. It is a myth that acid neutralizers like which work on the existing stomach acid causes the stomach to make more. There are some hardcore acid reflux drugs that cause that compensation effect. Just a small amount out of that red and yellow box with the arm and hammer on the side that you let sit in the fridge to absorb odors is all you need. Sometimes, if I've been out for a late dinner and go to bed early, I will drink a glass of water with a teaspoon just before I retire so as to prevent too much acid. This is the problem that Alka-Seltzer (Plop plop fizz fizz Oh what a relief it is) used to promote in their commercials. I found simple bicarb works just as well and at a fraction of the cost. You only need a little, a level teaspoon or less in a glass of water. It will taste a little salty as it reacts with the acid in your saliva, which is nothing to worry about. And you will burp a bit as CO2 forms as the bicarb reacts with the stomach acid. Again, nothing to worry about.  (+ info)
