What is the difference between a toe Hematoma and a toe Melanoma?

I have a black spot on my left toe, inside, and outside the nail itself. I think it's from putting on shoes that are too tight, but I don't know if it's a hematoma or a melanoma (or if it's something else.) Thanks in advance.
----------

Hematoma is a contained collection of blood commonly caused by some trauma. If you have it beneath your toenail, you would likely remember then injury that caused it. They usually get absorbed and disappear in a couple of weeks. A melanoma is a form of skin cancer. On the foot, when it occurs, it can and is often found beneath the toe nail. They continue to grow and can eventually spread if not surgically completely removed. A third possibility, more likely if your over 50 years old, is that it's not blood but rather a fungus under the nail - very common in later years, and it can be treated. If you're below 30, it's likely;y not a melanoma and you could wait a month. If your worries grow, then see a dermatologist (skin physician specialist.)  (+ info)

How to get rid of a LARGE hematoma after Cardiac Catheterization?

My mother had a Cardiac Catherization done due to blood clots. Three days after the Catherization she felt a bump, the size of a grape, on her upper thigh. Two days later the bump grew to the size of a large melon. Any ideas on how to make the hematoma go away? Do you know if it's possible to drain even though she is on blood thinners?
----------

This size of haematoma absolutely needs surgical drainage with possible closure of any possible leak.

You should not delay any more and you should take her straight back to the unit . With the size you described she may very well need a blood transfusion as well.

Best of Luck.  (+ info)

How long does it take for a Large thigh Hematoma to heal?

An ATV fell on my right leg causing a Large hematoma on my thigh. It has been 3 months and the hematoma is still swollen and hard. Do I need to have it drained? Please advise.
An ATV fell on my right leg causing a Large hematoma on my thigh. It has been 3 months and the hematoma is still swollen and hard. Do I need to have it drained? The Doctor advised me to put heat on it every couple hours to help the blood to circulate. Can anyone give me advice?
----------

It sounds like it needs some help to resolve. It is possible that an abscess has formed from the dead tissue, and requires treatment. It should be evaluated by a doctor.  (+ info)

How does it take hematoma to form after surgery?

How does it take hematoma to form after surgery? I had breast reduction surgery April 13th and the next day, I was complaining about burning under my armpit. I was wrapped up like a mummy with bandages, so there was no way for me to check that area. On the following Monday, I was getting dressed and noticed a small bruise in my arm pit. On Tuesday, the pain was so bad, I ripped off all the bandages, saw that the bruise was actually huge and fluid filled. Was the burning in my armpit on the 14th a sign that a hematoma was forming?
----------

Not too sure, have you talked to your doctor about it?

How long does it take for a hematoma to heal?

I got kicked in calf muscle while training and now I have a hematoma. There is an upcoming martial arts tournament 7th August. Would it be healed by then?
----------

A hematoma is a lot like a bruise. They both occur when blood escapes from the vessels and gets into the surrounding area. In the case of a hematoma, the blood pools under the skin.

You just have to wait until your body cleans everything up. I don't think it should take much longer than it takes for a regular contusion to heal.  (+ info)

How serious are the long term effects of a lower leg hematoma?

When I was 16 I fell off of a porch and hit my shin on a concrete step. It ended up forming into a LARGE hematoma from my knee to my ankle. I went to a doctor and they had me on crutches for weeks and just wrapping it and using heat and ice. Well thats been 7 years ago and I get shooting pains and swelling in that area. Could there be any possibility that there are clots left behind or some other serious condition due to the past injury?
