I have hemochromatosis. According to my blood tests every 3 mos. I'm in remission. Is tjis possible?

I havn't had high ferritan test results. It's normal. Should I still have blood drawn regularly?Previously It seemed as though I needed phlebotomy every 6 months.Does diabetes generally occur? My Dad had hemochromatosis and was a severe diabetic. I now have diabetes also. I'm trying to get rid of her by eating a vegan diet. Is this possible if I have hemochromatosis? I want to know whether I should continue with my medical treatment for the diabetes as is.

Diabetes is a main side effect of hemochromatosis. In other words, hemochromatosis can cause diabetes.

Yes, you MUST follow your diabetic treatment as well as the hemochromatosis treatment. It seems that these diseases "depend" on each other. Hemochromatosis causes diabetes. Diabetes reduces the body's abilitioes to function, which makes hemochromatosis harder to treat.

Eating a vegan diet is not the best approach to handling diabetes. You need a BALANCED diet containing both plant and animal materials. But I understand that red meat may play a factor in hemochromatosis. So look for "white meats" like chicken, pork, or fish.

A proper diet is CRITICAL to proper control of diabetic symptoms.

Ultimately, the side effect of diabetes seem to be more critical than those of hemochromatosis. Diabetes will cause nerve damage, blindness, heart attacks, strokes, kidney damage, and amputations.

Diabetes MUST be taken seriously -- DEAD seriously. Follow your doctors orders exactly. Have him refer you to a dietician who can help you plan properly balanced measl that will fight the diabetes AND the hemochromatosis.

Does anyone have any other suggestion? I'm afraid to try chelation as I am allergic to so many things, what else can I try?
I am a woman and have been in menapaus for four years, my veins are too small to have phlebotomies and I am seeing several doctors who don't seem to know what to do about my small vein problem.

what specialist would treat hemochromatosis?

thanks.

If you could find a doctor who specializes in diseases of the liver, that would probably would be best.

The first poster who replied is correct about the blood letting, but I believe it is done at a hospital. rather than the Red Cross. I don't know if the Red Cross would use donated blood which has excessive amounts of iron related to a liver disease.  (+ info)

does anyone know anything about hemochromatosis?

for years i have had what has been diagnosed as everything from MS to anemia. i looked up Irish genetic diseases online and found a site about hemochromatosis. does anyone know anything about this disease? ANY INFORMATION WOULD BE WELCOMED!!
----------

Haemochromatosis is also known as "Bronze diabetes". Its basically a defect in iron metabolism leading to its accumulation in blood and other tissues of body. In this disease there is excessive absorbtion and storage of iron in body and other tissuses leading to their damage. Principally affected organs are liver pancreas and the endocrine glands. Its chief clinical features are bronze discolouration of skin diabetes mellitus and lives failure. There is no cure . Its main modality of treatment is blood letting ie blood is allowed to flow so that excessive iron circulating in blood is removed. Or chelating ie certain drugs are given which bind to iron and prevent its metabolism.  (+ info)

hemochromatosis from iron supplements?

according to a blood test I have a very slight case of anemia
I was prescribed this iron sirup wich has 10mg of iron per 10ml and told to take 5ml a day. this seems like an awfull lot,
anyway Ive been taking it for a while now and am feeling more tired than I did before (this could however have something to do with me having my period...?) could I get hemochromatosis (iron overload) from the iron supplements
or is that just heredity?
----------

Hi it could be hemochromatosis but mostly because of your period. So don't be worried. Just ask to your doctor. My opinion is the dose is not relevant with it. But to be sure of it you must see your ferritin result in blood.

Does the HbA1c alter in patients with hemochromatosis?

No, it is not. If you're wondering if the A1C is correct because you're diagnosed with hemochromatosis, I'm sure it is. If you've been diagnosed with diabetes it's probably because the disease damaged your pancreas. It can however get better as your blood is removed and the iron overload is corrected. If your A1C is lower than you've expected it could be that your diabetes improved once your iron levels improved. Diabetes caused by hemochromatosis is often referred to bronze diabetes.  (+ info)

Hemochromatosis fatal?

My ex has been diagnosed with hemochromatosis a few months ago and the doctor gave her a lifespan of just a few months. I've heard that it's treatable, though it may damage the liver and whatnot. Could her levels be so high that phlebotomy can do nothing for her?

I'm unsure whether it's hereditary or not. She won't talk to me about it and I'm a little put off by pushing the issue.

It may have reached the untreatable stage. I'm very sorry. You may find this website helpful http://www.americanhs.org/  (+ info)
