Should I go to my doctor or a nutritionist to get tested for hyperthyroidism?

I am 5'10" and weigh 138 pounds (3kg) and my weight has been the cause of depression and not going out anywhere. I want to be checked to see if I have any problems with processing food or maybe hyperthyroidism, so would my GP be able to do this or should I go to a nutrionist?

I spent a year weight training and didn't gain any weight whatsoever.
I meant 64 kg.

You don't need to go to a nutritionist, to get tested it just takes a simple blood test. (a TSH test to be exact) I get mine tested every month and I just go to the hospital to get it done, but go into your doctors office and just tell him you are curious. There is nothing wrong with knowing and you never know, it could help you! I hope this helped!  (+ info)

How much weight does hyperthyroidism cause you to lose?

Is it true that someone with hyperthyroidism currently untreated can lose a stone in a month despite eating 2000kcal a day?
My friend has lost about a stone and a half in 6 weeks and says she has jsut got blood test results confirming hyperthyroid.
She appears to be eating okay but i only see her a couple of times a week.
Could she be telling the truth or may she have an eating disorder?
Thanks

What is the danger zone for BP and tachycardia with hyperthyroidism?

I was diagnosed over a year ago with hyperthyroidism. I do not know exactly what form, the endo say thyroiditis but that only lasts 3 months and I have not nor will I go back to that quack. There's only one other endo my insurance will pay for and it takes 8 months to get a first appointment. I have to pay for ER services if it isn't an emergancy and all I have is a family doctor and this isn't her field, that's the reason for specialists.
My blood pressure has been off, systolic is low, diastolic is high.. my resting heart rate is never lower then 120 and my body temp has went up from my normal of 96.7 to never less then 99.5 . I have never had blood pressure problems before my thyroid started messing up.
I don't want to go the emergancy room but I will if I need to. I do not want to go into a thryoid storm but I can't find any information about how high is too high concerning Blood Pressure and resting heart rate. Any info is greatly appreciated.
As I said, I cannot see an endocrinologist. The one I was first sent to was a quack and I can't get in to see the other until late December.

Is hyperthyroidism The same as graves disease?

I have been told I have hyperthyroidism but they have also mentioned graves disease. When I try and get information on these they tell me two different things to eat. What makes the difference?
----------

Hyperthyroidism is any condition that results in too much thyroid hormone being produced by the thyroid gland. Grave's disease is one cause of this condition where the entire gland becomes "overactive" and produces too much thyroid hormone. There are other conditions that cause hyperthyroidism, but the mechnism and nature of these conditions are different from Grave's disease. Tumors of the thyroid, and sometimes an inflammation of the thyroid can also cause hyperthyroidism. Your doctor can do tests to determine the cause. So in short, Grave's disease is not synonymous with hyperthyroidism, but it is one cause of it.  (+ info)

Could this lump have anything to do with hyperthyroidism?

I feel like evrything is going wrong with me. I have not had my period for over a year, I am 14, and not pregnant. Also I found this very small lump on my neck, it is soft and feels like jelly. Coudl this lump be connected to hyperthyroidism? May that be the cause of my absent period?
----------

Have you had a blood test to check your TSH levels? If you haven't, go see your doctor who can arrange for you to have a blood test which will be able to tell if your thyroid is over or under-active. The signs for an over active thyroid (hyperthyroidism) are: Weight loss, Heat intolerance and sweating,Irritability,Palpitations,Muscle weakness,Bowel movements,Menstruation problems, skin, hair and nails become weaker.
You can sometimes get lumps (goiter) if you have either hypothyroidism (under-active) or hyperthyroidism.
Remember periods can be irregular until you are eighteen. I would go to your doctors and explain about your menstruation problems and about the lump just to be sure and get things checked.  (+ info)
