How does potassium reverse the effects of periodic paralysis?

Well usually the periodic paralysis is caused by a deficiency in potassium, generally because of some kind of metabolic problem. Muscles need potassium to be able to work, and if your body is potassium depleted, you end up paralysed. Thus, replacement of potassium restores the normal electrolyte balance of the body and reverses the paralysis.  (+ info)

Is there anyone in Cleveland Ohio that has hypokalemic partial paralysis--who is your doc that is treating u?

Actually any Physician can treat you for hypokalemic partial paralysis

Hypokalaemic periodic paralysis is an autosomal, dominantly inherited disorder, characterized by attacks of partial or total muscle weakness and serum hypokalaemia.

Oral or intravenous administration of potassium is helpful in treating partial or complete attacks. Acetazolamide can reduce the frequency of attacks in type-1 hypokalaemic periodic paralysis.

If however you have developed Anderson's Syndrome your Physician will refer you to a Cardiac Specialist.

Can alcohol withdrawal cause hypokalemic paralysis...?

Has anyone ever experienced or know anything about this? How long after a binge can this occur and how dangerous is it??
Okay, i admit...I have been doing some research, because Ive relapse with my alcoholic boyfriend, and it seems that only a night or two of binge drinking causes these attacks in me and they are terrifying...total paralysis....it lasted about two hours on and off the other night...so i looked up paralysis and i'm trying to find some good research on this or experience with it....
----------

i would say that you're probably right there hun as the article i just read says that foods that are sugary or high in starch are most likely to trigger an attack.......... alcohol would obviously fall into that category as it is high in sugar too ...... here check out this link, it may be of use to you and i'm so sorry that i can't relate any personal experience for you ~

Thyrotoxic periodic paralysis?

Has anyone heard of this or have information on this? My spouse is diagnose with this. One day my spouse woke up and could not move his legs and one arm. He is over that now, but what if it happens again?!!
----------

Controlling the thyroid should prevent recurrence. Keeping a log of activities could help determine triggers (e.g.carbohydrates, salt). Talk to your doctor to help you set up the log. If it happens, he will need treatment and possibly reevaluation. There is another condition called familial periodic paralysis that could be involved.  (+ info)

paralysis..?

Ok, I was wondering, if someone is a paraplegic from the waist down, can they still have an erection? What if they are a quadriplegic?
quadriplegic: someone who is paralyzed and has no use of all 4 limbs

paraplegic: someone who is paralyzed and has no use of legs.
oh, and if they can have an erection, can they experience sexual pleasure?
Michael: I have no idea where you got the impression that I was dwelling on this at all. I asked a question. do you know why people ask questions, michael? because they do not know something and they want to broaden their knowledge. I am not a man, nor am I paralyzed, so obviously I have no personal experience with this topic. However, I was watching a movie the other day in which it was implied that a paralyzed man was having sex, and I wondered if the movie was accurate, and if it was true for all people. Thanks for the insult though, it was highly appreciated...

Jerk.

Yes, both quads and paras can experience erections and even ejaculation. Whether or not they have any sensation in the area is dependent on the extent of the injury. "Complete" injury means they have no sensation below the level of the injury "incomplete" injury means they may have some sensation below the injury site and could possibly feel their penis.  (+ info)

What happens if you get sleep paralysis and someone else is in the room?

I just looked at a few videos of Sleep Paralysis and I heard that you are paralised and you see visions and stuff. What would happen if a real person was awake when you were having sleep paralysis, what would the awake person see?
----------

My husband has been in the room many times while I have had it and nothing happens he just thinks im sleeping normally ... I have asked him to wake me if he notices me breathing strangely because I breathe really deep and loud to try and signal him to wake me up.  (+ info)

Is there a home test kit for muscle damage or rhabdomosis?

I have a rare muscle disorder called Hypokalemic Periodic Paralysis. This problem doesn't USUALLY include muscle swelling and damage. But I may be one of the "lucky" ones who gets rhabdomyosis. What I'm looking for is a home test kit, urine test strip or quick blood test that can tell me, when my legs are swollen, if I'm having ongoing muscle damage. Is there something out there that tests urine for CK, CPK, protein or nitrogen levels?
----------

Believe me, this is NOT a condition to be diagnosed or managed at home!!! Rhabdomyosis can be life-threatening, and you need to see a medical doctor if you even remotely think you may be experiencing it.
By the way; there are NO home tests available, for good reason!  (+ info)
