Impetigo is a common and highly contagious skin infection that most often occurs in children. In fact, it is the most common skin infection among children. Adults who contract impetigo usually get it from contact with children.

Impetigo is caused by toxin-producing bacteria that may normally be present on the skin. Unbroken skin usually provides a barrier to prevent bacteria from entering the body. However, any break in the skin, from a cut or skin disease, may permit the bacteria to enter and inflame the layers of skin. Environmental changes, including warmer weather, may also provide more opportunities for the bacteria to affect the body.

How can I look after my impetigo before I go to the doctors?

I have a mild case of impetigo on my chin and my doctors appointment isn't until next wednesday! I would just like to know if there is anything I can do until then to keep it clean and make sure it doesn't get any worse. If any over the counter creams you could recommend that would be great. Thanks.

What should I do with my boyfriends impetigo condition?

My boyfriend has impetigo on his lips, and i just want to make sure I take ALL precautions not to get it, or make his worse.

He is on Acutane, which causes his lips to get chapped, then he picked them and that's how he got it.

Also, if you have any tips of how to help him get better, faster, that would be good too.

I know not to kiss him, and not to touch his face, also to constantly wash my hands with antibacterial soap.
----------

I have impetigo too. Make sure he doesn't touch it, or lick it too much. Ask the doctor about Altabax, but I am not sure he would be able to use that since it is on his lips. I DO know that if you put a treatment near the nose, it may kill off teh infection. It worked for me.  (+ info)

Any good ways to get rid of Impetigo quickly?

My teenager gets recurring impetigo (about twice a year) on his nose. Its always a very small patch but still not nice for him.

He has good hygine and ive been told by the doctor this isnt the problem with him. He has been given a antibiotic cream to apply to it....

Does anyone know any better/faster remedies for it. Natural remedies, tea tree, TCP, salt water? What in your expereince works best and fastest?

Also he says it tingles before he gets it is there anywhere he can stop it before it comes?

Thanks
----------

He needs to use the antibiotic cream but yes try using tea tree oil based products routinley in your house. Why not switch all of your cleaning, laundry, and personal care products to tea tree oil based products to help get all of the harmful chemicals out of your home? When he has an outbreak have him use a cream with tea tree oil or straight tea tree oil on a cotton ball on the affected area.  (+ info)

How do you get rid of impetigo when it wont go away?

My brother has this nasty impetigo that wont go away, he has stayed out of school for 3 days at least and he has gone to the doctor twice. It is speading everywhere. Its super disgusting and its not going away no matter what. I just wanted to know what we should do because its really bothering me about how disgusting it looks and antibiotics arent working.
----------

With MRSA on the rise right now, have the doc swab it and check it for that. In the meantime, use a good triple antibiotic ointment like Bacitracin all over the impetigo and remember impetigo is contagious! Wash all hands involved!  (+ info)

How to tell difference between acne and impetigo?

I've always been prone to breakouts, but in the last few weeks it seems I am breaking out differently - they are painful and more pus filled.

I had impetigo long ago, and I remembered that it looked like acne, but not much more.

I dont have insurance so going to the doctor on a whim isn't cool - how can I tell the difference between the two? Because I would go for one, but not the other

Thanks
----------

Impetigo is a super infection that can be caused from acne or a burn or even a pet scratch. While acne can be cured with salicic acid and acne medications, impetigo is an infection and has to be cured with antibiotics and special creams. It does sorta start out like a little pimple, but it spreads flat and the inside is usually pus filled while the outside forms a crusty ring. If you dont have insurance you should go to the ER and have them bill you, you need to have it checked out.  (+ info)

What are the differences between a cold sore and impetigo?

My 4 year old son has a sore on his mouth which I thought was a cold sore (I get them so could have passed the virus on to him) His pre-school have said it may be impetigo so I wondered what the difference in appearance and symptoms would be.
----------

hi becky f, roberta young here,

first of all; cold sores are a viral infection, it is caused by a toxic event, such as stress, illness or food allergy. when you sense the first tingling sign of a cold sore, dab some oregano oil on it. OREGANO OIL or also called oil of oregano. it is one of natures most powerful and versatile antiseptic, it is also less risky and more accessible than antibiotics.

it can be used for several viral infections, such as ACNE, ARTHRITIS, ATHLETE'S FOOT, TICK BITES, PSORIASIS, WOUNDS AND OF COURSE COLD SORES. ***do not use it in excess, because it isso potent, it could be harmful. there is no match for oil of oregano, on bacteria, viruses and fungi. you can get it at your health food store, call first to make sure they have it in stock. it can also be purchased from North American Herb & Spice (Internatural) at 1-800-643-4221, or www.internatural.com. mind you this phone #, is from notes years ago. ***OREGANOL P73 OIL*** is the strongest formula. it is available in a dropper bottle or gel-cap form.

OREGAMAX-the unprocessed raw, dried oregano leaf with garlic and onion powder in capsules - is a milder formulation.

please keep in that wild oregano if an herb, so its the safest supplement we know of.

IMPETIGO-is a bacterial infection that is much more common in children than adults. it often starts when a small cut or scratch becomes infected. the symptoms are oozing, scabbed, honey-colored, and crusty sores. these types of sores often appear on the face between the upper lip and the nose, especially after a cold. ***CAUTION*** scratching the sores may spread IMPETIGO to other parts of the body. i know this to be very true because i had a muffler burn from a motorcycle when i was 13 years old, and i spread it to my face by scratching it and a small mosquito bite on my cheek, it was very painful as are cold sores and impetigo.

PREVENTION for impetigo is: wash all scratches and sores with soap and water. If your child has a runny nose, keep the area between the upper lip and nose clean to prevent infection. keep fingernails short and clean.

if it is impetigo some treatments you might want to use are:
1) remove crusts by soaking the area in warm water (please use a warm washcloth for the face) for 15-20 minutes, the scrub gently with the washcloth and antibacterial soap, use Betadine or Hibiclens. pat the area dry gently; do not rub. do this procedure several times a day.
2) use an antibiotic ointment (Bacitracin or Polysporin). be aware these might cause a local ***allergic*** reaction. keep creams cool and dry. remember to discard if out of date.
2a) cover the area with gauze taped well away from the area. doing this will help keep the infection from spreading and prevent scratching.
3) to prevent spreading the infection, do not share towels, washcloths or bath water. Men should shave around the sores, not over them, and use a clean blade daily. ***do not use a shaving brush.

please keep me informed about which one of the forms your son has.
you can email me back, with your comments and if you have any further questions, please let me know at:

take care and good luck, with your sons' recovery. you can try these for yourself since you have these quite often too.  (+ info)
