How long before oral thrush develops after getting treated with antibiotics?

I was given antibiotics for STD first week of March. Second week of April I developed oral thrush. Is it possible that the antibiotics I took resulted in me getting the oral thrush? Or no? Thanks for all your help.
----------

It is possible but a very unusual occurrence. If an otherwise well person develops oral thrush, that person should checked for HIV. If you have HIV or other known reasons to be immunocompromised then this is a common problem. Typically oral anti-fungal mouthwash is Rx'd to treat the problem.

What oral medication is available for melanoma skin cancer?

I just found out I have melanoma skin cancer, stage 2. Does anyone know of any oral medication for it? I am just curious. Thanks!
----------

More than likely you will receive immunology treatments i.e. Interferon shots. After the surgery and all the scans your oncologist will come up with a game plan.

quibijor,

Actually during the induction period, the Interferon is feed by an IV. The induction period is 5 times a week for one month. Afterwards 3 shots per week.  (+ info)

How long can you keep a bottle oral prelone before it goes bad?

How long can you keep a bottle of oral prelone in the refrigerator before it goes bad?

It would depend on how old the bottle was when you got it - the expiry starts when it is manufactured.

There should be an expiry date printed on the bottle.  (+ info)

How much does it cost to have an oral cancer screening done during a dental visit?

I read about a test where they can screen for abnormal cells, like in a PAP smear. It seems like a good idea, since HPV is so common, and so is oral sex. Has anyone had this done? How much does it cost?
----------

the cost is usually around $75.

They use a special liquid and light to view any suspicious areas. It's good to get even if you don't smoke.

Cheap compared to treatment or death  (+ info)

What sexually transmitted infections can you catch from oral sex?

Also, why do prostitutes sometimes offer oral without condoms when they would never dream of doing bareback sex? Surely the risk of STIs/AIDS is the same?
----------

HIV, Herpes, Hep A, Chlamydia, HPV and Syphilis can all be spread by oral sex.

My only answer to your second question would be that perhaps the prostitutes in question are ignorant of the risks. Even though they are sex workers not all of them are sex experts.

Thirdly, HIV/AIDS is spread by the virus entering the bloodstream. In anal sex, the rectum is likely to develop tiny tears and cuts because it is tight and the muscles inside it push outwards while a penis pushes inwards. Both vaginas and mouths can easily have little tears or scratches inside them. How often do you bite your mouth while eating, get an ulcer, or scratch your mouth by eating something kind of sharp? For that reason anal sex probably has the highest risk, and vaginal and oral sex carry about the same risk.

HIV/AIDS can be transmitted before ejaculation, as the pre-ejaculate (the small amount of fluid that comes out of a penis of a sexually aroused male, before he ejaculates) of an HIV-positive man carries the virus. Therefore the "withdrawal method" is not going to help.

Any prostitute that offers any condom-free service should be avoided. By having sex with that prostitute, one is effectively having sex with all his/her previous clients too.  (+ info)

What are some ways to help with an oral tumor in a cat without having surgery?

I believe my cat has an oral tumor. In the past 2 weeks the bump under her chin has grown 3x the size. And I just noticed that she lost a tooth and her other teeth are turning sideways. She has also been drooling a lot of blood. As well, losing a lot of weight. So is here anything over the counter type of medication I can give to her to help her ease the pain?
----------

That sounds like an abscess, not a tumor. You should check it out at the vet. They can give you antibios and drain it for you. This will save you and your cat a lot of pain, sweat and tears! :)  (+ info)

What is the difference between a dentist and oral surgeon?

Here in the U.S. we have seperate oral surgery offices from the regular dentist, but most of the professionals have a DDS degree, so why are they a seperate practice from a dentist?
----------

An oral surgeon goes through dental school to obtain his DDS degree but then takes post graduate residency training for 3 years to specialize in his field. He will end up doing no fillings, cosmetic dentistry, braces, and treating gum disease. He will limit his practice to surgical procedures of the mouth and facial area.  (+ info)

What are the chances of getting genital herpes from oral sex?

So people say that you can get genital herpes from having oral sex from someone who has cold sores.

What are the chances of getting genital herpes this way? Even if there is no sign of an outbreak?
----------

Yes, you can get genital herpes from having oral sex from someone who has the cold sore virus.

The chances of getting genital herpes this way depend on 2 things:

1. If you already have the cold sore virus on your mouth yourself

2. If the person who is giving you oral sex has an active sore or not.

Eight out of ten people are infected with the oral herpes virus hsv-1 by adulthood. The vast majority of these people are unaware that they are infected, because only a few people actually suffer outbreaks of the virus - cold sores ot you and me.

If you are one of the eight out of ten who is already infected with hsv-1 orally, and you have had the virus for a while, more than a few months, your chances of catching hsv-1 genitally through receiving oral sex from someone else who gets cold sores is virtually nil.

This is because when you have had the virus a while you produce antibodies which protect you from another infection with the same virus.

It takes a few months for you to acquire this protection though - that is why they recommend leaving it 3-6 months after exposure to the virus before you get tested to see if you have caught it. They test for the antibodies in your blood, which don't show up until this point. Probably still a good idea to avoid oral sex when your partner has a cold sore, just to be on the safe side. However, the Herpes Viruses Association of the UK gives the following advice:

"If you and your partner have the same virus you will not reinfect each other - even on a different part of the body. So, if you have caught it genitally from your partner’s facial cold sores, he or she will not catch the virus back on the genitals."

If you do not already have oral herpes, you are at risk of catching it, and whether or not you catch it is a lottery whenever you have oral sex. You are more likely to catch it if you are a woman - where I live, up to 75% of new genital herpes infections in young women are acquired this way.

Oral hsv-1 - the virus that causes cold sores - is the most infectious form of herpes. It is infectious about 18% of the time in total - about 10% of the time when you have no symptoms. Since you cannot tell when someone is infectious, whether or not you catch it is partly your partner being aware of their own body and realising when they are starting with a cold sore or the virus is active, and partly luck.

For example, neither I nor my sister caught the oral herpes virus as children like most (80% of) people do. So we both caught genital herpes through oral sex with a partner with cold sores by the time we hit our mid twenties.

I caught genital herpes seven years into my relationship with my boyfriend. We were aware of the possibility of him spreading it to me, so he didn't give me oral sex very often and he was scrupulously careful to avoid giving it me when he had any symptom he thought might indicate the virus was active - a tingle on his lip etc. He did not have a cold sore at the time he transmitted it to me, and hadn't for months.

My sister caught genital herpes through oral sex four months into a new relationship. Again, her partner did not have a cold sore at the time - 70% of herpes infections are passed when symptoms are not present. My friend at college caught genital herpes from a guy she took home for a one night stand in freshers' week. They didn't have intercourse, he only gave her oral sex and he didn't have a cold sore.

Hope this info is useful.  (+ info)

What are some techniques for staying calm during an oral presentation?

It's almost impossible for me to remain calm when giving an oral presentation. Even if I work on calming myself prior to the presentation, it doesn't help. As soon as I step in front of the class, my heart starts pounding, I start swallowing uncontrollably every 5 seconds, my mouth gets bone dry, and I run out of breath and am not able to finish a sentence without sounding like I'm gasping for air. What can I do?? Are there any miraculous techniques? Should I take some sort of medication before the presentation? Please help!
----------

Try to memorize your presentations as best as possible so that you don't have to worry about knowing what to say. Then if you have a friend in class just look at them during your presentation, and every so often fake scan the room by looking above peoples heads then return to your friend. If you don't have a friend of yours in a class you have to give a presentation then ask someone in the class that you feel comfortable with or trust so that you can look at them during your presentation and fake scan the room. Just try to act like you are practicing in front of your friend or the person that you trust instead of the whole school. What also helped me is that a lot of the kids in a given class are going to be ignoring you anyways because they are either thinking about their presentation or are just bored so you don't have as many eyes on you as you think. If none of that works and time doesn't lessen your fear of public speaking (don't worry you aren't alone, I used to be terrified) then you might want to have your parents to take you to a psychiatrist so that they can give you a prescription for a low level anti-anxiety medication like buspar. I take buspar (not for presentations but thyroid issue induced anxiety) and it is very gentle, there aren't any side-effects, and it really works to calm me down. Plus you don't have to take it everyday, it is a medication that can be used on an as needed basis so you could take it a half-hour before a presentation and not feel so anxious. But till then, don't worry about sounding extremely nervous when you talk because I used to sound like that and I never got marked off for it so don't worry. A lot of teachers recognize that public speaking is hard for some people so don't worry about them.  (+ info)
