Is there one class of viruses cause aseptic meningitis? Is it only arboviruses?

Aseptic meningitis refers to a clinical syndrome consistent with meningeal inflammation, but with negative cultures for bacterial cause. Symptoms include fever, headache, stiff neck, confusion, and light sensitivity. The cause is not necessarily viral - it may be secondary to fungus, medication side effect, or malignancy to name a few. Enterovirus is the most common cause of aseptic meningitis. Other viral causes of meningitis include HIV, Herpes Simplex Virus, Mumps (paramyxovirus), West Nile Virus, Varicella Zoster (Shingles virus), Epstein Barr Virus, Cytomegalovirus, and adenoviruses (common cold viruses).  (+ info)

I was diagnosed with Aseptic Meningitis? ?

I just got out of the hospital, and i'm being treated for aseptic menengitis. How much longer will these effects last? and why can't I work for a month?
----------

Aseptic meningitis usually lasts no more than 2 weeks, and typically closer to one week. I can't think of any reason why you couldn't go back to work as soon as the symptoms disappear - you're not contagious at that point, and it doesn't seem likely that you would be at risk of causing any problems to develop. Maybe you could ask the doc for clarification on the purpose of staying away from work.  (+ info)

more than aseptic meningitis?

My friend who is a health nut, exercises a lot and is only 32 has been diagonosed with aseptic meningitis. From what i read it only lasts for a few weeks, but his symptoms have been going on for almost one full year. NOBODY can tell him what's wrong other than aseptic meningitis. he's on all the meds for it, but nothing. His major problem right now is no sleep even w/ high doses of ativan (sometimes maybe 3 or 4 hours only). His left year keeps on draining foul discharge into his throat; he has a tiny hole in his ear drum, but according to several doctors, cat scans, mri etc there is nothing wrong with his ear. Also i read that aseptic menangitis is contagious so why wasn't he placed in quarentine? Please anyone in same situation now or the past or doctors please help us. he's lost his job due to his condition and no insurance either. please i beg of you.

My husband was diagnosed with Viral (Aseptic) Meningitis. I'm very confused / worried?

Last night my husband had to be taken to the hospital by ambulance. He was extremely sick - which is very rare for him. He had:
*shaking and chills *rapid temperature rise (it went from 98.3 to 101.4 in less then an hour, and while at the hospital it got up to 104.2 before it started to go down) *rapid pulse (I've tried taking his pulse but [1] he's shaking to hard and [2] I can't keep count) *flushed skin (it's also warm to the touch, but I don't know if that's the fever or not) *confusion (he kept calling me Charlie - which is his sisters name [Charlotte] who died six years ago) *Dizziness *Slurring his words *All over joint pain

He was diagnosed with Viral (Aseptic) Meningitis (which the doctor said could be gone within two weeks). He's still in Quarantine - for now, and still and and out of it (and still calling me Charlie).

While I'm worried and stressing over him. I hate to admit that I'm more worried about my children. I'm assuming since he's in Quarantine that this is a highly contagious disease. Our children are all under three. Is this something they could contract? Should I have them tested? How do I have them tested?

Also his brother - who also has two children both under two, stayed at my house last night, when my husband went to the hospital. Should he be worried that he could get this and/or contract it to his wife or children?

At some point I'll actually breathe and look up the information online, but right now my mind is racing. They won't let me in the room with my husband - since he's in Quarantine - and the doctor is very abrupt, answering me with "yes" and "no" and offering no type of explanation.

He said my husband probably got this from either herpes virus or mumps virus. Neither of which he's had or has. So I don't know.

Any help would be extremely grateful.
Sorry for the length of the question - or vent. ;0) Stress makes me talk - or type I guess.
I think the Quarintine is more protective measures then anything. Where we live your considered a pediatric case until your 25. So both my husband and I still get the room with the bright walls and little furniture ;0) As soon as he came in they took his stats and based on his pulse, blood pressure and temperature (when we got to the hospital it had gone from 101 to 102, hospitals less then ten minutes away) they brought him right to acute and after a ten minute exam they put him in quarintine.

I'm sorry but the good thing is that he had viral not bacterial which is deadly. The doctor is right it should be gone withing two week. the only way you're husband can pass it with your children is if he sneezes. Make sure you and your children wash you're hands and take baths. If they were to get that viral meningitis it wouldn't be deadly atleast. :) Has anyone with meningits sneezed on him? mph the only thing i can say is take lots of care and lots of luck! you shouldn't be worried :) as long as he's in gods hand nothing can harm him ;D  (+ info)

I have a weak left shoulder after having aseptic meningitis, is this the cause and permanent?

About three weeks ago I was diagnosed with Aseptic Meningitis (viral) and spent two days in the hospital. I've recovered for the most part, except for my left shoulder. Prior to getting sick I worked out 5 days a week and lifted heavy weights all the time. When I got sick I had bad shoulder pain for no reason, no strain, no obvious cause. The pain has all gone away but I literally have no strength. I can't even lift a gallon of milk to put back into the refrigerator. Yet the right side is strong as it used to be. MD says it's all related and time will heal it. I'm not buying it, I want to get back to the gym and I feel good enough to work out hard but have no strength. I wanted to know if anyone would know more in-depth of this issue. I'm really concerned now and quite worried. Thank you.

What is the testing procedure for meningitis?

If a college student comes down with meningitis, would all of the other students who took classes in those same buildings also have to get tested, even if they weren't experiencing any of the symptoms and if so, what exactly would that testing entail?
Where I go to college, something's going around that, according to my mother, who is a nurse, a possible precursor to meningitis and I was just wondering what exactly I would have to go through, as far as testing is concerned, should either any of my classmates or another person attending a class in one of the same buildings that I do comes down with meningitis.
----------

well someone would actually have to come down with meningitis for everyone to get tested. If you are concerned you can always ask the doc for a test anyway. The doctors usually look for a fever, rash, vomiting, headaches and check your lymph nodes for inflammation and ask you if you have any pain in your neck especially if you turn your neck up and down. If you have any of these early symptoms then they upgrade to a lumbar puncture to test for it. It isnt as painful as it used to be because they use anesthetics and has its risks but it can tell for sure if it is meningitis. Bacterial meningitis is treatable with antibiotics, viral meningitis has to run its course out of the body.  (+ info)

What's the difference between meningitis and lyme disease?

I was recently diagnosed with lyme disease and my symptoms fit it to a T, headache, stiff neck, and all. However, my mom is worried because lyme can turn into meningitis and my neck/head are hurting worse than ever. Both have the same symptoms. Is there a way I can tell if it is meningitis without getting a spinal tap (major fear of needles...)

Thanks!
----------

Meningitis is inflammation of the protective membranes covering the brain and spinal cord, known collectively as the meninges. Meningitis may develop in response to a number of causes, usually bacteria, viruses and other pathogens, but also physical injury, cancer or certain drugs

Lyme disease, or borreliosis, is an emerging infectious disease caused by at least three species of bacteria belonging to the genus Borrelia (such as ticks)  (+ info)

How can you tell the difference between bacterial meningitis and viral meningitis?

I've been diagnosed with viral meningitis but I'm not sure the doctor was right since I've never gotten a spinal tap to check the fluids. I need to know if I can distinguish between the two kinds of meningitis. The faster and more informative the response, the better.
----------

When did you first become ill if it was 3 days or more ago then it is viral otherwise you would be dead. If it has been less then 3 days go to you local ER asap and tell them what your dr told you. Your dr is an idiot for saying that the only way to see if it is meningitis is to do an LP or grow blood cultures. I think what you have is viral because if it was bacterial you would not be able to be sitting on the computer.

For all you know you don't have Meningitis at all.
Good luck and i hope your feeling better soon  (+ info)

How long is a person with meningitis infectious?

I shared a bottle of drink with a friend on Tuesday, on the friday she was taken into hospital with suspected meningitis. I wanted to know how at risk I am.
----------

you're at no risk at all -- for 99% of cases.
BUT !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! see below................

With the deadliest form of meningitis, meningococcal meningitis, there is a concern for treating close contacts (which really means household contacts, and others like you who might have had saliva contact). About 15% of those close contacts might also come down with bacterial (deadly) meningitis within the 2 weeks after contact with an active case.

But in November, you are in the middle of enterovirus season -- almost a guarantee that your friend has viral meningitis. Nothing for you to worry about.

Just ask her what KIND of meningitis the doctors said she has.
And if she truly had meningococcal meningitis, the doctors would be tracking you down for treatment, as would the public health department.  (+ info)
