How can I learn to flex the transverse abdominus on purpose?

Hello. I would like to know everything there is to know about the transverse abdominus. I would appreciate personal advice, pictures, links, etc.

Most importantly - how can I learn to specifically flex this muscle? I want to learn how to be able to flex it on purpose. What awareness exercises can I perform to know what flexing "feels" like?

Thank you. 10 points goes to the most helpful answerer.

I am a Army nurse and personal trainer. The abdominal muscles have several layers. The rectus abdominus, transferse abdominus, and the oblique muscles.

If you want to work the transverse abdominus use a stability ball. Yeah, yeah, those things are for chicks - right? No, they're not, not unless you use it right.

Start on the ball with your lowest part of your back on the ball. And instead of doing a crunch upwards - do it in reverse. In a controlled movement (and not falling off the back of the ball) do a reverse crunch bending your back behind the ball. Don't let your back do the work, use your abdominal muscles to do the work. Just simply bend back behind the ball using your ab muscles and then crunch back up. You'll feel it after 5 reverse crunches. That muscle you feel when you're crunching back... that's your transverse abdominus.

What are the odds of my transverse baby turning head down?

I'm 34 weeks along and the baby is transverse and she still hasn't dropped. I'm afraid she won't turn, and my doctor will not answer any of my questions about it. Did anyone else have a transverse baby this far along? How did it turn out? Did you have to have a C-section or did the baby turn?
Oh and this is my 2nd child
----------

The thing is that a baby can wait to turn all the way up until you are in full labour.
She won't drop if she is not head down. You still have a little time for baby to turn and the thing is that everybody assumes that if baby is not in head down position it is an automatic c-section. Well it's not, ask any midwife and she will tell you that you can still have your baby breech unless it is in the frank breech position.

There are methods you can use to help baby turn. Lay with your hips up in the air supported so your hips are higher than your head. Shine a flashlight at the bottom of your belly and encourage baby to move to the light. Some doctors can manually move baby but it can be very uncomfortable.

I am 28 weeks and baby is still bum down, it's annoying but I have to have a c-section anyways so I am not to worried about it.

How long will it take my transverse lobe piercing to heal?

i have a transverse lobe piercing and did have a10mm tunnel. but, i had to take my tunnel out to allow my transverse to heal ):
what can i do to promote healing?
how long will it take to heal?
and any other tips etc ?
(:
thankyoux
----------

To get anything to heal, try to keep yourself in good health (eating well, sleeping well, etc) and keep the area clean. Clean your piercing gently. Keep your hands and anything else that could get the area dirty (like hair) away. Take good care of the area and your ear should be fine.  (+ info)

What causes a fetus to lie in a transverse position?

My son did this, he didn't turn head down until a couple weeks before my due date. i am carrying a little girl now, is it likely that she will be transverse too? also i was GBS positive when i gave birth to my son so will that repeat itself too?
----------

Sarah !
The causes of transverse position are not fully known. However,it is more common :

*
In subsequent pregnancies
*
In pregnancies of multiples
*
When there is history of premature delivery
*
When the uterus has too much or too little amniotic fluid
*
In an abnormal shaped uterus or a uterus with abnormal growths, such as fibroids.
*
For women with placenta previa

Why is distal third of transverse colon drained by superior mesenteric vein?

Why doesn't it stop at the junction of proximal 2/3 and distal 1/3 of transverse colon like others? Why is SMV extra keen to go that extra 1/3?
I gather some people hate the end of school year. I am sorry to hear that. Now back the original question: why is distal third of transverse colon drained by superior mesenteric vein (and not inferior mesenteric vein as one would expect?) ? Many thanks.

Is it normal for my transverse colon to be hanging really low within my abdomen?

It hangs well below my belly button. The course of my colon going up the ascending colon to the hepatic flexure then coming down in a "U" shape is my transverse colon, then completing the "U" at the splenic flexure and then coming down the descending colon.
----------

The top part of the U in the transverse colon should be close to your waist, not below your belly button. How do you know it is low?

Is it okay that the baby is still transverse at 36 weeks?

I am 36 and 2 today. I had a 4D ultrasound done last night and he was still in the Transverse position. It worries me becasue all my friends that have kids say he should be turned head down by now. Should I be concerned?
----------

My son stayed in the transverse position right up until I went into labor, and was STILL that way at 9cm dilated. I ended up having to have an episiotomy, suction and then forceps to try and turn him around for delivery. Not very pleasant!
Most likely your little man will turn by the time labor comes, so please don't worry too much. If not, then a caesarean may be the best option.
I wish you lots of luck!  (+ info)

are forceps used during a c-section if the baby is lying in the transverse position?

are forceps used during a c-section if the baby is lying in the transverse position?
the hospital im attending doesn't offer manual turning of the baby before birth!
ive been trying to find some info on the net but i cant find anything. due to have a section in 4 weeks time.
----------

No, when they do a c-section they will open you up wide enough to easily take the baby out. Some hospitals will do a different type of incesion to make it easier, but forceps aren't necessary during a c-section.  (+ info)

5. If skeletal muscle had no transverse tubules, would action potentials still be able to trigger a contractio?

If skeletal muscle had no transverse tubules, would action potentials still be able to trigger a contraction?
----------

Action Potentials without Contraction in Frog Skeletal Muscle Fibers with Disrupted Transverse Tubules

Action potentials, with no accompanying contraction, were recorded from muscle fibers in which the transverse tubular system had been disrupted. The results show that action potentials require an intact transverse tubular system to cause contraction. Furthermore, both the after-depolarization following a single action potential and the slower, late afterpotential following a train of action potentials were absent in this preparation. Therefore, both phenomena must normally involve the transverse tubular system.  (+ info)

Any ways to work transverse abs withouting isolation exercises?

For some reason, transverse ab exercises feel weird to me. I don't really have to patience to pull in and hold my abs. But, this seems to be the main way suggested to tone/strengthen the transverse abs.

Anyone know of other ways to work them, maybe while doing an activity or other form of exercise, like biking?

Thanks : )
----------

You can work your tansverse abs with the Plank/hover or Hip flexion. If you don't want to do hip flexion as an isolated exercise do it with kness bent. These are targeted exercises and each require you to pull in and hold abs while exercising.

The main function of the abs is isometric contraction. This is how your torso is kept upright. Any exercise will help you to strengthen these core muscles and improve core stability but you do have to remember to pull in the muscles and hold as you mention. If you do not engage them they will not benefit.

Running, Biking, Skipping, Rowing........Abs will benefit if engaged during exercise.

They will also benefit if engaged during any kind of strength training but some good ones are things like single leg squats.  (+ info)
