How do you recover from hair breakage?

I've suffered a large amount of hair breakage, and now I have alot of stray hair sticking out all along my head. I'm not talking about the normal amount of hair breakage either. I use Biosilk shampoo and biolage conditioner, redkin antisnap leave in treatment, but still my hair is having a tough time reducing the breakage. I'm wanting to reduce this as well as get these stray hair to stop fraying all over the place. What do I do?

PS:I need to clarify: I'm not suffering from split ends. My hair is BREAKING, meaning it's breaking anywhere from the middle to closer to the root. I'm having short and random stray hairs popping out.

Heat styling and blow drying can make hair more dry. Use a super absorbent hair towel (ex. Aquis or The Body Shop) to minimize time needed to blow dry.

Use a deep conditioner as needed. Joico K-Pak conditioner is excellent. You can use it every day or as a hair mask. Joico also makes K-Pak shampoo which is good for dry, fragile hair.

Use a wide toothed comb after shampooing to remove tangles and start from the bottom working your way up gently. Dry hair can be brittle so treat it gently and do not brush it while it is wet.

Avoid styling products with a high alcohol content (ex. hair spray) and use a heat protection product before blow drying or styling.

Kiehl's Silk Groom or jojoba oil are good. They will help smooth down your hair while conditioning it.  (+ info)

Can you tell the difference between breakage and newgrowth at the root?

My hair grow very quickly and thick as well. Right now my roots are very coarse. I am not sure if it's just new growth, and I'm just trying to make sure that it's not breakage, just in case if I need to do something about it?

If it were breakage, there would be no hair. You're making no sense.  (+ info)

What is the best shampoo for hair that is prone to breakage?

I've been having problems with residue build-up from the Pantene Pro-V shampoo I used to use, as well a lot of breakage and split ends from blow drying and flat-ironing my hair. I recently got my hair cut shorter to trim off most of the split ends, but I'm worried that my hair is damaged and prone to breakage now. Can anyone recommend a shampoo and/or conditioner that will help "heal" my hair and prevent future breakage?

Enjoy has a low Ph balance, which will help. Also Ikon is really great. They only use cosmetic grade ingredients.  (+ info)

How to prevent hair breakage in African American hair?

I'm trying to grow my hair longer and healthier. I wash and deep condition and use a hot oil treatment every 1 to 2 weeks, but i still experience a lot of breakage. I don't know what I'm doing wrong. Does anyone have any suggestions?
----------

My hair breaks off pretty easily so I try not to use heat on my hair(flat irons, curling irons) Wrapping it at nights also helps ALOT. Use a satin or silk scarf to tie it down. Also be sure to oil/grease your scalp alot. And get your ends trimmed fairly often, at least after a relaxer. If your ends are pretty bad, don't be afraid to cut a couple inches off. It'll grow back healthier! Your hair will continue to break off other wise. If that doesnt work, try going to the salon every couple or weeks or so to get your hair treated.

For me, my hair grows when it's braided. I'll get a trim and good conditioning, and get some micro braids. When I take them down after a few months, I've made some progress!! GOOD LUCK  (+ info)

What shampoo and conditioner should I use to stop hair breakage?

My hair has always had a problem with breakage, but recently it has been a lot more than usual. It's probably because I dyed my hair from a box instead of going to the salon.

Please recommend from personal experience.

As Tickle Me Amy stated, Redken is a great haircare line. I personally use Nexxus. They have a great moisturizing line. You don't have to go to a salon to get it, you can get it at Walmart, Target, CVS. Also, try not to wash your hair too often and cut off those splits before it splits on up the shaft of your hair. There is no product that will mend split ends (the products that say they do are lying).   (+ info)

Any good hair products to stop breakage for hair with a relaxer?

I usually use head and shoulders with queen helena and it usually works pretty good. But I ran out. Should I try something new? Any types of mineral oils to stop breakage in dry flaky hair?
----------

so try this...regular trims are a must, about every 7-9 weeks. if its been awhile since you have had a trim then inches may be called for to get to healthy hair. i use vitamin e on fresh washed hair.(its a vitamin that can be purchased where you buy vitamins, cut open capsule, squeeze into hand, rub hands together and apply to hair) dont message into scalp. if you get too much then just rewash it. hair will feel slightly sticky until dry then it will be nice and soft. it tames the frizzies, deep conditions and makes hair grow about three in a month. it takes about a month for the e to kick in. dont brush your hair but maybe once a week to message the scalp, i use a wide tooth comb at other times. brushing breaks off hair. i just started biotin vitamins two months ago this sat and notice and big growth spurt from that. biotin is cheap. i also have the biotin shampoo that i got from a vitamin store online. five bucks for a big bottle and a big bottle of E is about 8 bucks. the biotin is about 3 bucks. good luck  (+ info)

What are some good ways to make your hair grow and stop breakage and dandruff?

ok, im not baldy or anything but i'm having trouble getting my hair to grow and it breaks off a lil bit and i have a BAD dandruff problem...i think the breakage is coming from the highlights in my hair, which i am growing out and never again getting, but i just need to know how to make my hair grow fuller and healthier...please help!
----------

The breakage is because of split ends. You have to get your hair cut at least a good inch and a half to get all the split ends off, for dandruff buy some shampoo at your drug store if you have tired that and it doesn't work get a prescribed dandruff shampoo. That will stop that, So those are the ways I know of to fix your problem(s). Hope I helped :]  (+ info)

Does trimming the ends of layers help them grow out and prevent breakage?

Well i have layers but i am growing them out. They are almost gone accept to one toward my face. Well my hair is really healthy but i have some breakage and i only ever use a wide tooth comb and i barely straighten or use heat on my hair. I deep condition but i have breakage where my layers are at. I think the breakage is just my layers because that's where its at. Well my salon lady always trims to very ends of my layers to help them grow. So how long will it take to help them grow??
----------

The reason that she trims them every time is to keep them from breaking, yes. If you do not trim them, then they can break further and further up the shaft and cause real damage. So when you keep it trimmed, it grows out healthier.
Think of a woman with really long hair where it seems as if the ends of her hair grow to a point...she doesn't keep her hair trimmed, so it grows out somewhat scraggly...make sense?  (+ info)
