obesity..........?

what do you think of obesity?
----------

Uhm ~ I think it's a problem nowadays. But I do think it's sad how so many companies are also promoting all those icky foods, convenience things, and portion sizes that caused all the weight gain. Like video games and such.

But I also think it's great that a lot of my friends who are overweight are really trying to lose weight. I have a lot of respect for people who choose to lose weight.  (+ info)

How is Childhood Obesity a present and future threat to america?

I am doing a research paper on chilhood obesity for my english class. I already have the causes, effects, prevention, and statistics of childhood obesity. All i need to write now is how childhood obesity is a present and future threat to america. Any ideas or links to articles will be greatly appreciated.
----------

Rather or not one supports the currents wars that America is in, we do need a military and the obesity of children will threaten our ability to protect ourselves in the future. The military has released reports stating a lot of recruits have been turned away due to their physical condition.

Also, being overweight increases the health problems in kids which could lead to more days missed at school. Our education system is already struggling to educate kids so the more school a kid misses do to illnesses, the least likely he/she is going to grow up to be a doctor, engineer, scientist, inventor, etc. Then there's payment of the illnesses, cost of insurance will go up for everyone.

So not only will be not be able to protect ourselves from outside forces, we won't be able to support or care for ourselves, we will be at the mercy of other powerful nations, and that is never a good thing.  (+ info)

What are some reasons why the occurrence of obesity in children is increasing?

What are some of the long term consequences that these children can face in their lifetime? What does the Web site tell you about obesity that you were not aware of before? Explain what you have learned.

What is the largest charity associated with Childhood Obesity?

I've recently come into a good deal of money and wanted to donate a portion of it into the following categories, as I find them to be very important:
1) Childhood Obesity
2) Breast Cancer
3) Heart Disease
4) Rain Forest

If anyone can supply information for these categories, I'd be very grateful. I have already checked out a few places, but I want to see if I missed anything. Thank you.

Great question! Always look for local charities and grassroots organizations that have fewer ties with corporate business. For example, American Heart Association gets lots of money from big business and rich doctors who make millions from expensive heart surguries that people may not even need...  (+ info)

What does Colorado do to have the lowest obesity rate in the US?

Obesity rates in the states are climbing. Colorado's rate is also growing but yet they still maintain the lowest obese rate in the whole United States. What is this due to?
----------

Fresh air that encourages people to go outside and be active, instead of stuck in the suburbs or inside their country homes due to nasty weather. That's my opinion. But look at this website.. http://www.webmd.com/diet/news/20080717/7-slimming-tips-from-the-skinniest-state?page=2 it explains some of the main factors.  (+ info)

What do you think of the normalization of obesity?

For example, celebrities such as Orah and Monique routinely declare that fat is beautiful, and that thin people are unhealthy and unrealistic. It's funny how criticism of skinny girls is perfectly OK and politically correct, but if you mention 1 word about obese women, you are Satan incarnate. Why are the feelings and insecurities of thin girls less valuable than obese girls?

Anyway. Do you think reframing obesity as a positive, healthy thing is a good idea?
----------

No, obesity is not a healthy idea. It is attractive to many people and by no means makes a person bad or stupid, but it is unhealthy. Being an obese person myself, I have thought a lot about this. Flavor is addictive. Foods that taste good are very addictive, Just think of kids and candy, If allowed, they will eat it all day everyday. When we get older our tastes change, we want a more mature flavor, but that addiction is still there, just in a different form. Americas economic success inevitably brought about the ready availability of rich, tasty foods. And they are available to us at any time of any day. This makes it feel like a sacrifice to go on a diet and/or eat healthy. But what do we do? We can't just shut down all these major food companies and farmers and historic food developments by stopping them from being produced, thats just not realistic. I'm sure our forefathers imagined the feasts and evolution of the American quisine, but they could not even imagine how rampant the obesity and poor health would overwhelm us. And even if they did, they surely would not have known what to do whilst still upholding human freedom. Its an inevitability of any truly successful civilization. Education is the only way to fix this. We can't just make people be healthy, we have to convince them to want to be healthy more than they want to eat good food. I'm still waiting to be convinced myself. Education is the only redemption for our country, and I don't mean standard school education, I mean basic everyday common sense education, this is where we are lacking.  (+ info)

How does limiting one’s intake of saturated fats help fight against obesity and being overweight?

I’m a bit confused. I’m doing a problem solution essay about obesity and wrote that one solution is reducing one’s intake of saturated fats, but other than lower health risks I can’t seem to find how it affects weight and obesity. Can you help me out? Thanks!
----------

Cutting saturated fat helps lower cholesterol levels. In terms of obesity cutting the overall fat content consumed will help, but ultimately it is about the amount of calories you consume in a day versus the amount used up. Keeping within the calorie recommendations for your age and gender, reducing fat consumption and taking regular exercise will help achieve and maintain a healthy weight.  (+ info)
