Also I need votes on what topic is better for project. Childhood obesity or post traumatic stress syndrome?

childhood obesity. tragic situation, there needs to be more info and discussion about it. not fair to kids to get that kind of a rought start in life.
post traumatic stress disorder is also a good topic, especially with so many soldiers coming home with it now.

Hypercortisolism causes suppression of appetite and obesity?

Excess cortisol causes obesity in Cushing's syndrome but also causes appetite suppression in general?

How can this be!
----------

Weight gain is a common symptom in Cushing's syndrome. But when you have lots of fat, the fat releases a hormone called leptin that controls your appetite. Leptin tells your brain that you've had enough to eat, that's why it suppresses appetite.  (+ info)

Why should I have to pay for people's obesity problems in the form of higher medical insurance premiums?

If overweight people want to die by the "McDonald's syndrome" that's fine. But why should I pay for it because these people make poor choices in their diets?
----------

You pay for smokers; you pay for people who drive recklessly and have accidents; you pay for people who do stupid things and have accidents; you pay for people who do drugs and get sick; you pay for people who do all KINDS of things. When YOU can claim to do absolutely nothing that harms your health, then I'll say you might have a right to complain. Until then, you're no better than anybody else - just different.  (+ info)

is there any link between obesity and carpel tunnel syndrome?

carpel tunnel syndrome is related to compression of median nerve in the carpel bones .Oedema ,any trauma or hormonal imbalance can cause this syndrome .But is it related to obesity.....any literature is there to support the relation between the two
----------

wellllll i go to physical therapy and the physical therapist speicalizes in cpt (carpel tunnel syndrome) and i was reading one of the posters in his office on cpt and it said main factors that can cause cpt and one of the listed factors was obesity.

if you really need to find literature or find background info on the relation between the two you should just google "carpel tunnel syndrome and obesity" and see what comes up. or you could visit your friendly neighborhood physician

DO NOT TAKE DIET PILLS! They are dangerous!!

Last year I was visiting my parents and took diet pills (Leptopril -does not contain ephedra) on top on my exercise routine and normal diet. I was 26 at the time, 5'11, 180 lbs. By week three I was sick. I had diarrhea, dry heaves, dizziness, headaches, and a general feeling of being sick. I thought I had caught the flu or something. I had lost 13 lbs in 4 days. One morning I told my mom I didn't feel good. My vision kept blacking out and I felt (for lack of a better way to say it) stoned. Later that afternoon I was walking from the bathroom to my bedroom (a 5 foot walk) and I passed out. I was rushed to the hospital emergency where they did a bunch of tests on me.

My pulse was up to 120, My blood pressure was 150/40, they had to start me on an IV, the did an EKG on me, took blood and urine samples, and a whole barrage of other tests.

They finally got me stabilized and said that I was dehydrated and malnutritioned. I told him that I took diet pills. When I mentioned diet pill, the doctors face lit up and said that's why. He said they can cause a whole bunch of health problems, including death. He told me to toss the diet pills or next time I might not be so lucky.

I was kept in the hospital for almost 10 hours, given 3 or 4 IVs, potassium, juices, and monitored (by the EKG, blood pressure, and heart rate machines) every 15 minutes.

Please take my story as a warning. If you seriously want to loose weight there are better ways (I know because I've lost weight after this)

The quickest way is to cut out red meats, starches, breads, sugars, alcohol, and sodas.

Eat veggies (salads are good), soups, and drink TONS of water. If you get hungry between a meal, drink water to fill up.

In moderation eat white meats, and fruits (fruits contain natural sugars, and that can put on weight)

Practice portion control. Yes, you'll feel hungry at first, but think of your goal, and soon your stomach will start shrinking and you won't have that feeling anymore.  (+ info)

Dear Yahoo answers,

For 7 years now I have been loosing a downhill battle with my weight.Though I eat healthy, control calories and portions I have managed to balloon to over 360 pounds.I have a back injury and Chronic fatigue syndrome,I try to move as much as I can taking walks throughout the week.I eat 1,000 calories a day.Mostly organic fruits, vegetables, skinless chicken,
quinoa and brown rice.I have developed stomach problems and cannot find foods I digest well without explosive diarrhea. The last time I ate junk food was in 2,000.No one in the medical community or in society believes me,they think I must be eating in secret I WISH TO GOD THAT WAS TRUE.I have PCOS and every day of my life I cry looking at myself in the mirror.Im hungry all the time,my stomach hurts all the time, doctors dont give me the answer.THEY SAY LOOSE WEIGHT i try to cut down to 500 calories still the weight keeps increasing.IM AT THE END OF THE ROPE.SOMEONE OUT THERE HERE MY DESPERATE CRY!
IF I EAT MORE THEN 1,000 calories a day I GAIN EVEN MORE RAPIDLY
----------

Oh sweetheart, I so hear where you are coming from...I also have PCOS. I found that out about 2 years ago.

I joined curves, eat what i'm supposed to... it just isn't working as fast as I would like it too... I hate myself ... I understand your pain...

I lately have been exercising alot... walking when and where I was so embarrassed to before... EAT MORE but in smaller portions...

Diet pills... are dumb... this is the way they work... the more you take the more your body becomes immune to it... the more you need to take because you stop loosing the weight...you become dependent... it gets dangerous. I hate all the ads on tv...

SUPPORT IS THE MAJOR THING I FIND!!! The turtle will win the race...

my email is [email protected] if you ever want to talk... but Keep your head up and don't give up...  (+ info)

How is Childhood Obesity a present and future threat to america?

I am doing a research paper on chilhood obesity for my english class. I already have the causes, effects, prevention, and statistics of childhood obesity. All i need to write now is how childhood obesity is a present and future threat to america. Any ideas or links to articles will be greatly appreciated.
----------

Rather or not one supports the currents wars that America is in, we do need a military and the obesity of children will threaten our ability to protect ourselves in the future. The military has released reports stating a lot of recruits have been turned away due to their physical condition.

Also, being overweight increases the health problems in kids which could lead to more days missed at school. Our education system is already struggling to educate kids so the more school a kid misses do to illnesses, the least likely he/she is going to grow up to be a doctor, engineer, scientist, inventor, etc. Then there's payment of the illnesses, cost of insurance will go up for everyone.

So not only will be not be able to protect ourselves from outside forces, we won't be able to support or care for ourselves, we will be at the mercy of other powerful nations, and that is never a good thing.  (+ info)

I think I should be tested for polycystic ovary syndrome?

I learned today about PCOS on the realage website where I read that it is the cause of a significant portion of obesity in women. When I looked into the disease I found I had a lot of the symptoms, such as irregular and heavy periods, weight gain around my middle, acne and dandruff, and constant pelvic pain. I think this is something I should get checked out, but many sites recommend seeing a specialist and my insurance will not cover that. What should I do? Does anyone know a site where I can find a specialist in my area (Denver)?
----------

Your regular doctor can help you out, although you really should see an endocrinologist. Will your insurance cover a specialist if you were referred by your regular doctor?  (+ info)

What are some reasons why the occurrence of obesity in children is increasing?

What are some of the long term consequences that these children can face in their lifetime? What does the Web site tell you about obesity that you were not aware of before? Explain what you have learned.
----------

because the parents dont really care what goes in their bodies.
these children basically feed themselves, eating what ever is on the counter. meaning chips, cookies, and juices from the fridge.
pop, snacks.
its really sad, i have a cousin like this. she's 4.
i feel so bad for her, cause she the sweetest little thing.  (+ info)
