may be inner ear. Otitis externa rarely causes headache.
home remedy..mix rubbing alcohol and white vinegar equal parts of each, room temperature and use 3 drops 4 times daily each ear. use after swimming and you will not get ear infection again. the formula is for external ear. maybe a different doc on Monday  (+ info)

Does anyone know of a cure for otitis externa?

I've suffered from chronic otitis externa in both ears since I was quite young, and NOTHING gets rid of it. My doctor keeps on prescribing me various ear drops and antibiotics and although they work initially, after a few weeks the infection just returns as virulent as before. I never swim, and even if I work really hard to keep water out of my ears and not to scratch them, the infection still returns. Any suggestions at all? Anything?

even something as simple as taking a shower or staying in places where the air is mosit can aggravate it. Also avoid sticking towels etc. in your ears to dry them and make sure you dont have an allergy to anything. It can also be caused by a bacteria, so get your doctor to swab your ears and get it tested. good luck.  (+ info)

Does anyone else suffer from acute otitis externa? How do i get rid of it?

Ive had it all my life, about 4-5times a year, in either ear, it drives me nuts! Ive tried to leave it but end up with a swollen neck and go deaf besides the fact it hurts soooo much. My doc wont give me repeat prescription of antibiotics. What can i do to stop getting it and when i feel it coming on is there anything i can do besides going to the doc?

The treatment for otitis externa depends upon the stage of the disease. If your doctor recognizes the problem at an early phase, antibiotic ear drops may be sufficient to eradicate the disease. Typically, these ear drops contain not only an antibiotic, but also a steroid (such as hydrocortisone), which serves to reduce inflammation. Ear drops are purposefully formulated to be a bit on the acidic side, so as to restore the normal acid/base balance in the ear canal.
If hearing loss is also present, then there may be an abundance of debris in the ear canal. "Debris" usually consist of a large amount of skin that has flaked off the canal wall, along with pus, and sometimes fungal material. Ear drops may still work in such cases, but typically the course is long and drawn out. An ear, nose and throat specialist (ENT) can suction these debris from the ear canal, and the patient will get better much faster. Debris tend to block the ear drops’ entry into the canal; moreover, debris are great "food" to fuel further bacterial and/or fungal growth.
If the ENT finds that the canal is "swollen shut," he or she will usually place a small "wick" in the canal. The wick expands when ear drops are applied. This puts pressure on the ear canal skin, thus helping to reduce the swelling, but the wick also enables ear drops to travel deeper into the canal.
Oral antibiotics are sometimes necessary. In particular, if the external ear looks puffy and red, or if the lymph nodes in the neck have become enlarged and tender, then oral antibiotics are necessary.
Finally, it is usually recommend that the patient observes "dry ear precautions." This means: no water of any kind in the ears– no bath water, sea water, or pool water. When the patient bathes, he/she is instructed to place a water-tight ear plug into the ear canal. My favorite ear plug is a good-sized wad of cotton, in which has been massaged some petroleum jelly (Vaseline) in order to make it water proof. This makes for an inexpensive, comfortable and effective ear plug.
You should observe dry ear precautions until the ear canal infection has completely resolved. In people who keep getting swimmer’s ear (such as you), it is usually recommend that dry ear precautions become part of the daily routine. Some folks simply can’t get water in their ears!  (+ info)

What is the layman's term for "otitis externa"?

It sounds like "pseumerthears".

Also, is there a website that has medical terminology with its layman's term counterparts?

Thanks.

How do we treat "Otitis Externa with a perforated tympanic membrane"?

It is an ear infection to the outer ear canal but since you have a perforated eardrum, stay away from ear drops of any kind. With no ear drum protecting your inner ear, any medicated drops will drain to your inner ear, which may cause some nasty symptoms and possible damage. Opt for oral antibiotics instead.  (+ info)

I was diagnosed with Otitis Externa. The "wick" is making its way out, should I keep pushing it back in?

I went to the doctor earlier today because of an infection in my ear and he diagnosed me with otitis externa (after drying my ear out of all the swimmers ear drops i was loading it up with -- DO NOT OVERDO IT LIKE I DID). Anyway, he put a wick in my ear which keeps the drops you put in at bay so they can effectively treat the infected middle ear. It's been less than 24 hours and it has started to seriously itch. I've avoided digging in there for a good scratch for obvious reasons but I've been tapping the cartilage before the opening to ease it a little bit and the wick keeps working its way out. While it hasn't completely fallen out, I wonder if it's okay to push it back in (not too far, of course). It hasn't even been 24 hours since I've been diagnosed, I have a follow up in a week, and this is giving me problems.

don't push it back in !! the itch means that your ear is healing !! I've had wicks in my ear,for an ear infection !! and the wick sometimes ,works it's way to the surface !! leaving it alone would be better for you !! don't scratch your ear,it will get worse if you do !! it happened to me & i still have problems with my ear !! be careful and i hope your ear feels better soon !!  (+ info)

is there anything i can do at home to deal with the pain of otitis externa?

i am still having trouble with my left ear.. the pain is back again..and its swollen..im on antibiotics, but is there anything i can do for the pain? without over dosing on otc pain relivers??please help this is sooo annoying..and painful
----------

I feel so sorry for you. I had the same thing about 3 times.
I think you need to call your physician and ask for some pain medication. When you call. rate your pain for him on a 0-10 scale and tell him how unbearable the pain is and he can prescribe you a pain pill.
In my case, the doc gave me Lorcet 10 and it took the pain away and made me sleep for about 16 hrs.
In the meantime, you can take up to 800 mg of over the counter Ibuprophen (4 tablets) It takes the swelling down and gives you some relief. I believe the limit on Ibuprophen is 1600 mg in 24 hours. Only dont take it if you are allergic.
I am a RN and I hope this helps  (+ info)
