What is the correlation between fetal kidney blockage and Down's Syndrome?

I had a level II ultrasound which revealed a small blockage of both fetal kidneys. The doctor said this was common in boys, but that there was a small chance that this could also be a marker for Down Syndrome. She said the only way to know for sure was through amnio. How common is this correlation?
----------

its not that common but not uncommon ether was there any thing else as there's usually other thing .. IE hart ?  (+ info)

Bulgaria adoptions and fetal alcohol syndrome?

My husband and I are planning on adopting a child and are considering Bulgaria. Is fetal alcohol syndrome a concern in this country like it is in Russia and the former USSR countries.
----------

i believe it is. i know there is a patch or sticker that you can take with you and place on the child's forehead and then have pictures taken of the child and send them back to a doctor in the U.S. to see if FAS is a risk (i saw this process in a show about adoption). i do believe it is a concern in bulgaria. best of luck and congrats!  (+ info)

I know about fetal alcohol syndrome. But can alcohol use effect a woman’s eggs before conception?

I have read about fetal alcohol syndrome effecting the baby before it is born. But I'm curious if alcohol use by a woman even if she is not pregnant could effect all her eggs. I know that women are born with all the eggs they will ever have. It causes me to wonder if whatever a woman is exposed to in her child bearing life time( pesticides, pharmaceuticals etc etc) will also have an effect on those eggs. I don't know if it would even be possible to study this.
----------

Yes, alcohol can damage your eggs as well as alcohol can damage the mans sperm.  (+ info)

What is the prognosis for Fetal Alcohol Syndrome?

I'm doing a report on Fetal Alcohol Syndrome for my 9th grade health class and I can't seem to find what the prognosis would be. As in what the future holds for someone with this disease and the implications of the disease on society, humanity, the U.S, etc.

do you agree of adopting a child with a fetal alcohol syndrome?

Im doing this survey for my english class, and then later for my essay.
Being a parent, would you like to adopt a child with fetal alcohol syndrome or not, and why?
Does adopting a child with fetal alcohol syndrome make you a hero, because you adopted the child despite his/her abnormalities to give the child a better life?
----------

"Does adopting a child with fetal alcohol syndrome make you a hero, because you adopted the child despite his/her abnormalities to give the child a better life?"

From your snide little comment on the end there, I doubt you're creating a neutral survey that truly answers the question.

I would not adopt any child to feel like a "hero". I doubt that, ten years after the adoption is complete, anyone is walking up and patting the adoptive parent's back saying, "Wow, you are a HERO for adopting that special needs child!"

And yes, yes I would.  (+ info)

A question for anyone with knowledge on fetal alcohol syndrome?

Is it possible to have the physical symptoms but not the mental symptoms of FAS?

I have a friend, his mother is an alcoholic currently and has been ever since he can remember. Today I saw his baby photos, I immediately thought of Fetal alcohol syndrome when I saw the pictures, he has almost every physical symptom though I have never noticed anything to be wrong with him mentally?
----------

That's definitely possible. Medical things are rarely perfectly ordered, as in, "If this happens, then this will be the result", its more like "If this happens, you're greatly increasing the chance of this happening."

Therefore its entirely possible that the physical symptoms manifested themselves, while the mental ones didn't, or remained dormant.

It's also possible that the mental symptoms manifested themselves in a positive way. I have the opposite issue - I didn't really show the physical symptoms, but had a few early mental symptoms like severe ADHD.

If he contracted a more minor case of ADHD, or something similar, its entirely possible that it just contributed to his personality in a way that people didn't find negative at all.

Hope this helped.  (+ info)

Are there any disorders that resemble mild Fetal Alcohol Syndrome?

* Brachman-DeLange syndrome
* Toluene syndrome
