How can I get rid of chronic coughing up phlegm?

I live in Beijing, which is a bit of a dirty, crowded polluted city. I am much more prone to colds here than in Australia, and I often cough up clear, white and pale yellow phelgm, especially when I go swimming. Even when I don't have a cold I still have "Beijing lungs" - I cough up phlegm and I have stuff sitting at the back of my nose and throat, which is pretty uncomfortable.

Any ideas as to what I can do to get rid of this chronic phelgm?

Thanks!
----------

Dairy intolerance can cause phlegm..cut out dairy from diet for 6 months and then re-introduce it slowly.

if you don't eat dairy then go doc's to check what else it can be  (+ info)

My wife (45 yrs) is presently at menopause, suffering from chronic rhinitis which can be relieved by anti-allergic medicines like Citrizine but recurrs immidietely. She has never suffered from chronic rhinitis in past.Experts please advice.

Her respiratory system is narrowed and conjested with mucus and easy to get relief by bronchodialators (nebulizer) in a hospital for the first time.
Regular use of inhalers like salbair (sos) is necessary
Ayurvedic medicine do not give instant relief for long term use it is ok  (+ info)

What is the best pain medication for chronic long term dental pain?

I have chronic agonising pain in my left cheeck that never goes away I have had it for 2 years and the doctors seem to have just given up. What is the best painkiller?
----------

I had a similar pain in my cheek for two years. First of all, make sure your bite is good and are not loading on one or more teeth. I would ask for an anticonvulsant type of medication. This is the most common medication prescribed for longterm facial nerve pain. It was the only medication that helped me. Some antibiotics also have inflammatory properties and you could try that first or at the same time.  (+ info)

What is the difference between Asthma and Chronic Bronchitis?

They recently diagnosed me with Asthma and have me on two types of inhalers.
I really think it's Chronic Bronchitis.

What symptoms distinguish these two ailments from each other?
I'm 42 and lived with a smoker for 25 years.
----------

Chronic bronchitis is usually found only in heavy smokers. Asthma usually presents itself at a very young age while the other one presents in the 50+ age group. Chronic bronchitis is also associated with a lot of sputum production when compared to asthma. Asthma can also be due to some medication, food, pollen or dust to which you are allergic to.  (+ info)

What are the homeostatic mechanisms involved in chronic kidney disease?

How does chronic kidney disease affect homeostatic mechanisms?
What is the cause and what is the effect on homeostatic mechanisms, what are the treatments?
----------

The kidneys are regarded as homeostatic organs. If you stop and consider what the kidneys do, you'll know how chronic kidney disease affects the homeostatic functions of these organs.

I'm not sure you're wording this question correctly -- "What are the homeostatic mechanisms involved in chronic kidney disease?" -- Kidney disease doesn't implement homeostatic mechanisms...it interferes with homeostasis..

"How does chronic kidney disease affect homeostatic mechanisms?" -- As I said, stop and consider what the kidneys do and then review how chronic disease affects the kidneys.

"What is the cause and what is the effect on homeostatic mechanisms" -- Like I said...

"what are the treatments?" -- Dietary restrictions, hypertension management, diabetes management, lipid management, weight management, smoking cessation, epogen injections, diuretics, vit. D, phosphate binders management, dialysis or transplantation. Obviously, the course of treatment depends on the causes and contributory factors.  (+ info)

What is the difference between a terminally illness and a chronic illness?

I would like to know what is the difference between a chronic illness and a terminally illness because my wife has a chronic disease called diabetes.
----------

Terminal means it will kill you. Chronic means it is life-threatening. I have diabetes, too, and it can be severe, but there is a treatment.

Cancer is sometimes a terminal illness.

I hope this helped. :)  (+ info)

What are some causes of spontaneous and chronic nose bleeds ?

My boyfriend has chronic nose bleeds that seem to happen every few days, or every couple weeks. He says that he's had them since he was a kid. He has lowish blood pressure, drinks lots of water, doesn't snort coke, and is otherwise very healthy..

Today his nose started to bleed spontaneously and he blew a snot-rocket in the toilet, filling the whole toilet with blood. He lost so much that he felt dizzy!

We've been together for 5 years, and I've noticed that they are becoming more frequent in the past six months.

Any ideas?
----------

Does he have allergies- any nasal itching, watery nose, congestion, water eyes, scratchy eyes, itchy skin? Allergies can cause spontaneous nose bleeds. A dry nose can also do it but the last 6mo is allergy season so I would say that might be your best bet. One way to take care of this would be for him to mix his own nasal spray its more effective and cheaper than going to the store to buy some. You mix 1/2teasp of salt with 8oz of warm water and mix. Then use a bulb syringe to squirt it into eash nostrile. This needs to be done 2-4x a day. I do it 2x a day. My nose bleeds have stopped almost completely. It moistureses the nasal passages and rids the nose of allergens and dirt. Needs to be done all the time.  (+ info)

What are the symptoms and treatment for chronic heart failure?

I have already had quintuplet by pass surgery in 2003 and then had 5 stents placed in my heart in 2005. Recently I have had severe edema in my legs and my ankles and feet. I went to a few vascular surgeons and they said it was not any clots or blockages to my veins or a. They said my problems were most likely chronic heart failure. I am now on Lasix and weigh myself every day,but still feel bad. Any suggestions?
----------

If you are now on Lasix that will help you remove the excess fluids that is in your legs and ankles. One thing you have to do is to limit your fluid intake. Since you have chronic heart failure, your heart cannot tolerate too much fluid in the body. This will make you more ill. Excess fluid intake can also accumulate not only on your legs and ankles but also in the lungs which will make you breathless. Try to ascertain or ask your cardiologist how much fluid intake you are allowed per day.  (+ info)

What chronic pain could stem from a butterfly femur fracture?

The fracture also required immediate surgery in which a plate and six screws were in, and then another surgery 6-7 months after the date of injury to remove the plate and screws. I'm just wondering what chronic pain could stem from this process.
----------

I'm not familiar with the term "butterfly femur fx", but it sounds like it's a fx that must have spread the bone apart near the end of the bone, and I'm guessing just above the knee.
The most common cause of chronic pain after an accident is Traumatic Arthritis. This occurs when the fracture is into the joint. The doctor repairs it but It's a little like trying to glue a china plate back together. It's never as smooth as it was.

If the fracture is not into the joint, your odds of being pain free are considerably better. Your age is one of the biggest factors, the younger you are, the faster you heal.  (+ info)
