What are the long-term health effects of exposure to bleach fumes?

The warnings on the side of household cleaners say that the fumes can be toxic, even deadly. But these warnings are about immediate risk. Are there other, long-term risks, such as cancer, from inhaling bleach fumes? And how much exposure is needed to significantly increase such risks?
----------

Bleach fumes can damage the linings of the esophagus and lungs as well as respiratory scarring. It really doesn't take a great deal of exposure, it's more dependant on concentration.  (+ info)

What are the effects of radon exposure during pregnancy?

What are some short/long term (medical, neurological) effects of radon during the first trimester of pregnancy? My baby was born at 30 weeks & I suspect it's because of where I live. Can you site any articles or websites? Naturally I will move out before she's discharged from the hospital. Thank you!
----------

Let me preface this by saying I am answering your question as a certified NEHA Radon measurement tech, and not a physician. Having said this, I am confident in answering that Radon Gas in your home would have no effect on your pregnancy.

The damage radon gas does to the body occurs through the radioactive breakdown of a Radon Isotope into "Alpha Particles." These particles are not strong enough to penetrate your skin, so your fetus would be protected by your own body.

Radon does damage by being inhaled into your lungs, then decaying on your lung tissue. When this occurs, damage is done at the molecular level, on your lung, and ultimately may lead to lung cancer.

My question to you is, what is the level of Radon in your home? If you haven't had it inspected by a professional, then get an inspection by an NEHA certified inspector. If your level is below 4.0 picoCuries per liter, you will not need to move out. Also, even if it is very high, you need not rush the move... you have time. Radon effects the lungs over years and decades, not weeks.

Is there any negative effects from exposure to gangrene?

I had to be exposed to someone with gangrene (they eventually had the limb amputated). After hospitalization I had to house-sit for about the equivalent of 40-50 hours. The gangrene odor was all over the entire house and every object in the house had the smell in it. Is there any negative effects to myself from breathing this (and serious garbage odor?) in for a few days?
Any relavent information that may help with your answers:
From cleaning the house I cut myself a few times (open wounds!!) and experienced three nose-bleeds (this is atypical for me as I haven't had a nose bleed in many years) - the nose bleeds may be from the dry air in the night, though.
Anyway, any help would be appreciated. I AM going to mention this to my doctor and ask any questions on Monday, but any heads up would be nice until then.

what kind of side effects does the baby have if your not taking prenatal pills?

ok so i started taking prenatal pills when i was 3 months pregnant. i took them up until i was 5 months because my doctor said i had a miscarriage. and now i know for sure that im still pregnant but i havent takin any prenatal pills for about a month and a half. could there be anything wrong with my baby?
----------

no nothing could be wrong. Prenatals dont detemine if somthing is wrong with your child. I couldnt take a prenatal with my first child, i would throw it back up after about an 30 mins to an hour. My son came out fine. im now 6 months pregnant with my second and i cant take it again due to getting sick, and so far she is health. because of a miscarriage i would say you should start taking them if you can.  (+ info)

Are there any negative effects from repeated exposure to an allergen while taking allergy medicine?

My understanding is that most (if not all) allergy medicines work by inhibiting the histamine response to allergen exposure rather than the protein reactions that normally cause this response.

Since repeated exposure to an allergen can cause stronger reactions over time, does this mean that repeated exposure while on allergy medicine could or would cause lowered tolerance to that allergen?
----------

Repeated exposure to an allergen can cause stronger reactions over time, or it can desensitize you to an allergen. When people get allergy shots, they are being gradually desensitized through exposure to an allergen. Basically, it's a crap shoot.

I take allergy medication, and my doctor advises me to go ahead and eat foods that I am mildly allergic to. He says that it is perfectly acceptable to 'tolerate' something when on medication and consume it, even if I am technically allergic.  (+ info)
