Is there such a thing as backwards progeria?

There's this disease called progeria that makes younger people look a lot older, but i was wondering if there was any disease that made older people look younger. I know it sounds stupid, but I was just wondering if anyone had ever heard of anything like that.
----------

none and it's impossible because to do you'd have to reverse all damages accumulated throughout live, regenerate atrophied tissue, and restore tissue architecture. although scientists have able to reverse differentiation of cells using Oct3/4, Sox2, Klf4, and c-Myc, application to reverse aging using this technology by inducing self regeneration is still decades, centuries away, but possible.

hyperthyroidism would accelerate aging, not retard it because hyperthyroidism raises BMR, degeneration-regeneration of tissues thereby shortening the cellular telomeres prematurely if thyrotoxicosis doesnt kill u first  (+ info)

Can anyone hep with an interview on Progeria?

I am doing research on Progeria and i need an interview. Could anyone be willing for me to interview them by email?

how many known cases of progeria are there?

like the diesase, progeria. how many known cases of it are there?
um, i mean like on record. like all together, whether active or not.
----------

You really don't give enough information. Do you mean ever, active reported, estimates non reported, what country or world wide?
See, pretty hard to answer with a generalized question like that. The estimate is 1/ 4 mill. births. 35-45 active cases worldwide, about 100 on record, but that does not include any unreported cases.

do you think Josie Duggar has progeria ?

Progeria is an extremely rare, severe, genetic condition. Basically it makes youu look like your very old wen your not. [ google Seth Cook Progeria ] But people have benn saying Josie looks like she might have the disorder. I think it looks like it too possibly. What do youu think ?? Only answer if you've seen her onn the show it doesnt show much in her pictures.
----------

No! She was born at 25 weeks! give her a break! She's not going to look completely normal for a while.

She looks totally normal to me for a baby born that premature.

And progeria does ALOT more than just 'making you look old when you're not'.... It's a serious condition and people who have it don't usually live past the age of 10!  (+ info)

Can anyone give me some information on the disease Progeria?

What can anyone do to help children with this disease?
----------

Progeria, or Hutchinson-Gilford progeria syndrome, is a rare, fatal, genetic condition of childhood with striking features resembling premature aging. Children with progeria usually have a normal appearance in early infancy. At approximately nine to 24 months of age, affected children begin to experience profound growth delays, resulting in short stature and low weight. They also develop a distinctive facial appearance characterized by a disproportionately small face in comparison to the head; an underdeveloped jaw (micrognathia); malformation and crowding of the teeth; abnormally prominent eyes; a small, nose; prominent eyes and a subtle blueness around the mouth. In addition, by the second year of life, the scalp hair, eyebrows, and eyelashes are lost (alopecia), and the scalp hair may be replaced by small, downy, white or blond hairs. Additional characteristic features include generalized atherosclerosis, cardiovascular disease and stroke, hip dislocations, unusually prominent veins of the scalp, loss of the layer of fat beneath the skin (subcutaneous adipose tissue), defects of the nails, joint stiffness, skeletal defects, and/or other abnormalities. According to reports in the medical literature, individuals with Hutchinson-Gilford progeria syndrome develop premature, widespread thickening and loss of elasticity of artery walls (arteriosclerosis), which result in life-threatening complications during childhood, adolescence, or early adulthood. Children with progeria die of heart disease (atherosclerosis) at an average age of 13 years, with a range of about eight to 21 years.

Progeria is caused by a mutation of the gene LMNA, or lamin A. The lamin A protein is the scaffolding that holds the nucleus of a cell together. Researchers now believe that the defective lamin A protein makes the nucleus unstable. That cellular instability appears to lead to the process of premature aging in progeria. Because neither parent carries or expresses the mutation, each case is believed to represent a sporadic, new mutation that happens most notably in a single sperm or egg immediately prior to conception.  (+ info)

What are the differences between progeria and Werner syndrome?

Werner syndrome is just a type of progeria sundrome. But both mean premature aging.  (+ info)

how many children in the United States have been diagnosed with progeria?

im doing a school report, and i cannot find that anywhere!!
----------

I watched a show on Progeria on Discovery Health, and I think the worldwide statistic was somewhere around 40 cases...this is an extremely rare condition. I also saw a show about a similiar disease called Cockaney's Syndrome...good luck with your report  (+ info)

Do children with Progeria learn more quickly?

Although I doubt it, I haven't really done enough research to answer this question. I was just wondering. Does anyone know?
----------

This perhaps is the most unfair of all things that happen to a child with progeria. Due to the advanced state of aging on the brain, a child with Progeria, has diminished learning capabilities. It is an interesting topic but a very sad disorder.  (+ info)
