Prolactinoma Question- Tumor on Putritry Gland in brain?

hey Guys,

I have a prolactinoma on my putrutry gland in my brain. This glad sits underneith your brain and behind your optic nerve.

This is the main gland in your brain and it controls everything from youor metabolism, fertility, hormones etc etc.

My question is that Im on medication called Dostinex. I take a full tablet once a week every week and have been told I will be on this for life.
I want to start thinking about starting a family in teh next year or so and will have to go off mymedication to try and conceive. I cant be on the medication once Im pregnant and usually the tumor grows back rather quickly due to all the activity in your gland when a women is pregnant.

has anyone out there had any problems with conceiving whith a prolactinoma?

How long were you off your meds for? Did your tumor grow back rapidly?

Any info anyone can provided would be great. I think about this almost every single day and am so worried the when the time comes I will have trouble..
----------

I had a meningioma brain tumor that was on my pituitary gland. I had brain surgery to remove it over 4 years ago and so far there is no regrowth.
Be sure to talk to your doctor (neurologist?) prior to going off your medication. Your prolactin levels will need to be monitored closely during the time you are trying to conceive and during your pregnancy.
I am wondering if your tumor is inoperable. Have you seen a neurosurgeon? Especially since a prolactinoma can cause visual problems. You might want to consider seeing a neurosurgeon or get a second opinion to see if the tumor can be removed. I would suggest getting a referral to a major neurology/neurosurgery hospital (see the link below). I was told by 2 neurosurgeons that my tumor was inoperable. I got a third opinion from a surgeon at the Cleveland Clinic who said he could do the surgery and it was a 100% success.

Expired prolactinoma meds, how harmful if taken?

Cabergoline is way too expensive for an uninsured student, so I've pulled out an expired bottle of bromocriptine that I didn't finish in 2007. It is all I have at this time. I know my 17 year old prolactinoma like the back of my hand, yet I can't get a refill without my making an appointment with a doctor who - I AM CERTAIN will simply order labs and MRI's and write a Cabergoline prescription ($85 per pill) -all in about 10 minutes. All to tell me what I already know, my prolactin is high, but the prolactinoma is only around 1mm. Yet I will be up to my neck in medical bills that I cannot pay. So, I'm considering taking expired medicine instead. Or should I order meds from Canada?

it may be only slightly effective or not at all. most meds are at least 95% effective shortly after exp but this is 2 yrs past  (+ info)

Fibromyalgia, Prolactin, (prolactinoma) Melatonin medical study done in 1996?

I suffer from Fibromyalgia and insomnia and also have a pituitary tumor. I recently started taking Melatonin to sleep. In doing research to find out dosage information, I read about this study http://www.afsafund.org/research_1996.html , where as far as I can tell, it was researched the connection between FMS, Prolactin and Melatonin. At the end of the article it states that the doctor is analyzing the results.

I tried to read some documents online about the results, but they are not in layman terms. Can someone please explain what the outcome of this study was?

I would like to know how Melatonin affects prolactin or a prolactinoma. Also if there is information about the connection between a Prolactinoma and FMS. And any other information learned from reading the findings that are written in doctor's terms.

Thanks.

1) I did medline/pubmed searched for Muhammad Yunis: he either did not complete this study or was not accepted for publication in a reputable peer-reviewed research journal.
http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/
I suspect that he did not find anything clinically significant and moved on to another project.

2) There has been research on the relationship b/w hormone disfunctions and fibromyalgia, but they are not at any breakthrough points yet.

"Evaluation and management of endocrine dysfunction in fibromyalgia."
Geenen R, Jacobs JW, Bijlsma JW. Rheum Dis Clin North Am. 2002 May;28(2):389-404.

3. Melatonin suppresses prolactin production. It will not shrink a prolactinoma, but may cause modest reductions in prolactin levels. This has no direct relevance to FMS treatment , however  (+ info)

Prolactinoma, low HGH and Hairloss?

I have a lot of hairloss i believe from traction/picking/scratching dermatitis i wasnt doing it for very long but when i was my scalp was in a bad state extremely oily, sore, itchy, burning and it took me a while to get it under control and its the best its been in a long time.

But months after getting it under control ive seen no regrowth in the areas affected at all, but the rest of my hair thickeness has improved with getting the inflammation under control. The reason im asking this is a bout a year ago i visited a Trichologist and he puled out a patch of hair for analysis and that area is also still missing, and ive read hair pulled out from one occasion should grow back no bother. Can my conditions be causing poor healing/follicle recovery ?

I know already i have a poor immune system and poor circualtion as if i get a even the smallest cut it seems to take forever to heal or sometimes scars.

Also im going to be starting Hormone replacement therapy on top of my CAbergoline i take for my prolactinoma soon, what can i expect from it in tersm of hair growth if any ?

Hey, well that fact that you have a prolactinoma explains allot about your issue, as you probably know the prolactinoma is a benign tumor of the pituitary gland that affects natural hormone function in the body, the cell regeneration issue that your describing is most likely due to the prolactinoma, so you should talk to your doctor about this.

Hope this helps

Could my metal filling have caused my prolactinoma?

I just talked to someone who believed a metal filling on my front tooth could be why i have a prolactinoma. I am confused. Surley the dentist wouldn't have used it if it was dangerous. She said it effects our bodies meridian lines.....Any advise would be great thanks.
Thanks for the support cookie, but i am not suffering it's microscopic and my life is normal and my medication works. Not a big delio at all. I just got told that mercury fillings can effect your meridian lines and my filling is at the front on the same side as my little tumor. But thanks for the kind words
----------

I have heard so many health problems blamed on the mercury in metal fillings. I'm sure some of them are true. However, I doubt prolactinoma is one.

Personally, I believe that my SSRI, Effexor caused mine. I have had 3 doctors, a Neurologist, Endocrinologist, and a Neurosurgeon all tell me, after extensive tests and questions, that if it were legal for them to just come right out and tell me it was the Effexor that caused it, they would. In other words, they were convinced it was the Effexor, but legally they can't say that.

On another note, thinking it is caused or attributed to the fillings, or anything else that might make you wonder "if only I hadn't...." and leading to an idea that the tumor is your fault, adds more suffering than you already are going through. So, please don't do that to yourself.

For myself, I'm blaming the big pharmaceutical company. LOL!! But really, I hope someday they find out what causes these tumors. Until then, forgive, be at peace, have faith.

Take care.  (+ info)

Look at these sites for more info

If you are unsure or scared of what you are reading just go to your local GP, they can explain it better and run more tests to either diagnose it or rule it out.

prolactinoma....tumor on my brain please help....?

anyone have a pitruity gland tumor?

I'm really scared just been diagnosed today :-(

please help :-( xxx
I'm 17 years old x
----------

Don't be scared; have a look at the link below, it's got lots of info on prolactinomas, and it's very reassuring.

There's a big difference between having a pituitary tumour and a brain tumour - the main one being, a prolactinoma is benign. You don't have cancer, and your life isn't in any danger. The tumour (which in this case simply means 'growth', not cancer), will not grow and spread, so isn't dangerous.

You're likely to be treated using medications. These are usually very effective. They relieve symptoms quickly, and actually shrink the tumour. If they aren't effective, surgery is also available, but the vast majority of people with the condition don't need it.

It must have been a nasty shock for you to hear, but don't worry. You're not in any danger, and your condition is easily treated. So try to relax. Talking it over with your parents or a friend may make you feel better.  (+ info)

Prolactinoma sufferers? (Hyperprolactinaemia-benign tumour of the pituarity gland) ?

Do you know of anyone who has successfully been able to come off of cabergoline tablets used to treat this condition if yes how long did it take and was they able to keep off of them without the condition coming back?

I have been on cabergoline for over 4 years now, in May this year they told me to stop these tablets after a long period of me having stable prolactin levels but then a month later I had to go back on them because the prolactin levels went sky high again.

Just want an idea about how others have got on with this condition and a rough idea of what my own odds of being successful may be. Thanks.
Please just give an answer someone and I will give you best answer even it is wrong.
Seems like I have an alien illness that nobody knows about since I not recieved any answers!
And there's my GP telling me this is a common condition!

You are suffering from a disease I've never heard of in all my years of studying biology, but the tumour is benign so I don't think it'll spread  (+ info)

Prolactinoma help please?

Hi i am a 24 yr old male and i got my results back from a blood test, for years ive been suffering loads of different things that i have been unable to get answers for

No body or facial hair
Bier spots ( white spots all over skin)
Hair loss diffusely with an itchy oily scalp
Gynecomastia ( left side)
overweight
Depression
Anxiety
BDD due to all my physical symptoms

all this went on for at least 4 years

but for as long as i can remember i have always had a low sex drive even when i was in school i was attracted to girls but never had an urge for it to go any further.

Anyways here are my test results

FSH 2.1 iu/l
LH 3.8 iu/l
prolactin 4908 iu/l
testosterone 6.4 iu/l

could this be the cause off all my symptoms ? do you reckon i may be able to get treatment without surgery as the thought of it really scares me

You could try viagra but I will tell ya what, that stuff sucks. The side effects are terrible. Have you ever tried a sexual enhancer? I was in your situation, like I said, viagra was tried but it wasn't for me considering the side effects overwhelm the pleasures of it. I found this natural herbal enhancer and figured what the heck, if it's natural it must be great and plus it said no side effects. I tried it and after about two days of taking it I was just horny like a mad man. All the time, I have erections that want to stand straight up and the orgasms are to die for. The stuff was called vigrx plus and I saved on it at the time at hughs-reviews.com , You should check it out. I love the fact it's made from a researched blend of herbs that seem to do the trick for me atleast.

Good luck and I hope this helps.  (+ info)
