Substance-induced mood disorder - afterwards?

Does anyone have any information on the aftereffects of substance-induced depression, specifically that caused by prescription medications? I went through major depression (to the point of considering suicide) about a year and a half ago due to a migraine medication. The depression stopped, but I'm having trouble with the idea that I can be given something and have it transform me from a reasonably healthy person to a suicidal wreck. Particularly since I didn't particularly want the medication at the time - the doctor and my parents kind of pressured me into taking it (I had just turned 18).

I had showed no signs of depression before going on the medication; the depression symptom were related to when I took the medication in the day. So it was clearly caused by that medication. I've been trying to explain why this experience upsets me, but I haven't been able to explain clearly so that anyone takes me seriously.
I've found general information on substance-induced mood disorders, but none that's particularly relevant to my situation. All the studies that I've found have focused on either alcohol or illegal drugs. So it's not really relevant to my case, since the major problem is that this drug was supposed to help me, not kill me.

Certain anti-depressants are used to treat migraines. They don't know quite how they work. That's what I was on. But I wasn't told about the risk until afterwards, and I was pretty much made to take the medication if I wanted any kind of treatment at all. So I think that's part of the problem too - being forced onto something that ended up being damaging, without being told that it could do that. The physical aftereffects should have worn off by now. I'm more looking for psychological aftereffects, but I can't seem to get anyone to take this seriously.

That is disturbing and unfortunate. You probably feel like that time was stolen from you for no good reason, and feel a fear that you could again become depressed. You are a strong person, and I wish you well.  (+ info)

I can't tell If i have an anxiety disorder caused by a substance, called substance induced anxiety disorder?

What are all the symptoms for this problem? Ive been feeling anxious for almost 2 years now not knowing for sure what sparked the problem. The only thing i can remember is either starting to drink alcohol for the first time or smoking weed for the first time about 2 years ago. I do one or the other about 2 to 3 times a month. Ever since then I've been feeling weird facial tension hard to describe. Like face gets tensed up, hard to talk or pronounce words clearly, shortness of breath, hot flashes, dry red eyes. When I'm high or drink I feel fine, its the next day or two that i feel these symptoms until I either smoke or drink. I was prescribed celexa 2 years ago and I'm still currently taking it. I guess I'm wondering if all my symptoms are a substance-induced anxiety disorder? If anyone has experienced this please let me know cause its the worst thing ever, and if you have had this how did you get rid of it? please any feedback would be useful!

Leaking CSF, Hay Fever, Concussion or Substance-induced nasal discharge?

Curious.

I leak this clear, runny, sometimes bubbly liquid from my nose.
It's been going on for a good month and a half.
I have an idea of what it could be, but it's hard to distinguish between the over-lapping symptoms.

So far, it only happens after I seriously train.
I play contact sports, so a knock in the skull and nose isn't uncommon. Wouldn't really know if I've had a concussion or nasal fracture, I like to beleive I haven't.

I take Ephedrine HCL (Nasal decongestant) But, I take it for weight loss. I had a bit of a coke habit. Nine month binge. Weak septum, I guess. A month clean now though. Sinus problems maybe?

I've never had allergies, but it only acts up when I train outside, so who knows?

I always get head-aches, I've been wearing contacts for five years, but I don't eat much and work out a good bit so it could be that.

Best thing would be to get a MRI on my brain and nasal passage way, take some tests to eliminate leaking CSF, I guess. But, could it be anything else?
----------

Well, if it isnt your allergies, I would try one other thing. CSF has a lot of glucose in it. Next time it happens taste it ( I know this is gross) If it tastes sweet, I would go to the Dr immediately. The taste test is the best thing if you dont have a glucose strip. Also, it leaves a "halo" like appearance if put on a tissue. I'd still ask the dr, just to be sure. CSF leak could get very serious.  (+ info)

Is there any difference between hysterical psychoses and hysteria?

Is it correct to say that simple hysteria, untreated can become hysterical psychoses?
no offensive language please.
----------

Hysteria and hysterical psychoses are not generally considered the same. One can have a diagnosis of hysteria and histrionic personality disorder, and it usually does not turn into hysteric psychosis. For the diagnosis of hysteric psychosis there must exist an overlay of other Axis 1 Diagnostic Symptoms, such as Paranoid Schizophrenie, or Bi Polar Disorder, then hysteria becomes a symptom of the aforementioned disorders. Hysteria can also be used as a coping mechanism or as a tool avoidant personality.disorder  (+ info)

What is the best treatment for meth induced psychosis?

Any suggestions for natural remedies would be helpful, or other things that have helped you or someone you know
----------

Closed empty locked room with no escape. Even then they can tear themselves and the walls apart. There is no real "home" cure for it. They need medical/psychiatric care immediately. They are a danger to themselves and others.

Some meth users can go off the deep end on the very first try and others seem to get through for weeks without treatment.

Good luck, you are really going to need it.  (+ info)

Where can I get more unbiased information on marijuana and psychoses?

I am bipolar and borderline schizophrenic and medicate with marijuana quite frequently. I recently learned that there are reports concluding that marijuana exacerbates these conditions. I've had prescriptions, but gave them up because they were crazy expensive, and I didn't like the side effects. Using weed in place of pharmaceuticals has leveled me out with no side effects, and it's more fun than popping a pill.

Is it true that I could be giving myself brain damage, or worsening the schizophrenia? Also, if it is true, can I reverse the effects by not smoking?
----------

First off this is a very controversial topic, I have watched every single documentary on marijuana.

Quote"Is it true that I could be giving myself brain damage, or worsening the schizophrenia",
To date their has been no scientific evidence to link marijuana with brain damage. despite what you may of heard.
To date their has been no scientific evidence to link "worsening the schizophrenia"

In short here are the so called facts
THC= bad for schizophrenic patients (the study was botched, and ran on teens and pre teens, their findings suggested that thc can lead to schizophrenia)
CBN= good for schizophrenic patients (done by actual scientists studying the plant)
both THC and CBN are found in marijuana

Sure it can make SOME people paranoid when their on it, but that doesn't mean it will make you schizophrenic.
Pretty much everything bad that has ever been said about marijuana ended up being a lie.

(THIS IS HOW IT ALL STARTED)
They are actually saying it has been proven to help schizophrenia
CBN (Cannabinol) (it's another active ingredient in marijuana, it has been proven to combat schizophrenia and when the drug companies found out about this, they need to act fast)
Some scientists did a study and found CBN in marijuana to be helpful with schizophrenia.
Then the drug companies heard about this, they then got a team together to do a botch study and debunk their findings in order to sell more pharmaceutical drugs.
(if that study was true, then that would mean Jamaicans have a higher schizophrenic population and that simply isn't true)

It all comes down to this
Pharmaceutical drugs makes drug companies richer, where as something you can grow in your backyard won't make them any money.
Drug companies are some of the richest organizations in the world. (worth more then certain other country's)
They want each and every person taking some type of pharmaceutical medication, every kid now a days either has ADD, turrets, bipolar or even schizophrenia, meanwhile there just being a normal kid.
"that kids not listening in class he must have ADD quick get him some pills" this is the norm now a days, 5 years down the road that same kid now has serious mental problems, meanwhile if he had been left alone and not treated he would have ended up normal.

You can't believe a word of what these guys say.
For example these are the same people that lead everyone to believe tobacco smoking is good for you back in the 30-40s
These are the same people that kept lieing through their teeth right up to the 90's.... Believe it or not they still are claiming tobacco smoking is not bad as people think.

You do the math.
take all the MS patients
take all the Arthritis patients
now put them all in one pile and do the math on how much money drug companies are loosing do to marijuana......The more illnesses that can be treated with marijuana = less money for them.
Right now it's a fight over schizophrenic patients,.a war between drug companies and a natural plant.
who's side will you choose?  (+ info)

What are the chances on recovering from drug induced psychosis?

My first psychotic experience was while smoking marijuana.

I have not smoked in about 10 years now, and I still have the occasional episode and I've been hospitalized once since I stopped smoking.

Your chances of recovering will have a lot to do with the underlying cause. Unfortunately it is very difficult to predict.

I have tried seroquel, riperdal, and zyprexa. None of these meds seemed to help long term. In the short term they seemed to help, but then my symptoms came back very strongly. I have read that drug induced psychosis often does not respond well to the antipsychotics, so it may be a different mechanism.

If you are suffering from drug induced psychosis, I would recommend that you at least give them a try to see if you benefit from them. Dealing with this has been extraordinarily difficult for me, and I've come close to suicide many times, and I'm not sure how much longer I can hold out.

--- EDIT ---
I think craft p's answer is nonsense (don't take that the wrong way, I mean no disrespect). I'm fully aware that the experiences I had were drug induced, and started as a result of the drugs (in particular marijuana). But even though I've not smoked in about 10 years, I have yet to recover. It is not an issue of willpower.

The problem is that your brain has now seen things in a completely different way, and convincing yourself that what you experienced wasn't real can be as difficult as convincing yourself that the earth doesn't revolve around the sun.  (+ info)

How common is alcohol induced psychosis?

I do not have a long term psychotic illness. After I became intoxicated I presented with acute psychosis and I was subsequently detained under section 2 of the UK Mental Health Act.
Oh no I do not suffer from alcoholism. I meant acute psychosis caused directly from drinking, not psychosis caused by ceasing to drink, like DTs.
Oh and section 2 is 28 days detention (there nothing less in English law - earlier release is at the pleasure of the psychiatrist i/c)
----------

I assume Section 2 is similar to the 3-day hold we have in the USA. Anyway, alcohol induced psychosis (formerly called delirium tremens or the DT's) is very common. There are many more problem drinkers (no offense intended) than we realize, and sudden alcohol discontinuation can be fatal if not treated with drugs and vitamins. I hope this is helpful, and you are feeling better.

Wow, 28 days. That's a serious and expensive detention right there. Anyway, I've never heard of psychosis in a non-alcoholic, but I am no expert. I, also, am not truly an alcoholic.. I just like my odd glass now and again.  (+ info)

How long until drug induced psychosis goes away?

It's from marijuana, I stopped 2 Saturdays (so it's been like 10 days) ago, but I am still thinking messed up stuff and it's just crazy and scary. How long until the psychosis goes away? And cite please don't guess
----------

some psychoses NEVER go away. For each brain cell you destroyed, the body DOES NOT manufacture new ones.  (+ info)
