Please Help with a psychotic disorder convalescence: need some tips?

I have my nephew (20 yrs) with a recent nervous breakdown and psychotic disorder (you know listening voices, hallucinations). He is getting well with medication and therapy. Now, as family and friends what are some good tips or activities we can do together so we can help him to recover. First thing comes to mind is sports cause he likes to exercise...what else can we do?
...And also "must not" things to do or to talk to
----------

Since he's interested in sports, why not take him to one of
those skateboarding areas where the boys run up and down
ramps or in one of those cement enclosures? We have one
in a city park and the boys are really talented that use their
boards there. I think it's fun to watch myself.
I would think anything in an outside activity, away from en-
closures would be of benefit. With winter coming on, maybe
there is a ski slope near you he can try his luck on. They
have snow boarding now as an option to skiing. Or just going
down a slope in an innertube you can rent,is another.
You can start him on bowling, or even rollerskating too.
Things where he is physically active with something to challenge his mind, and yet, where he can have fun too.
Keeping him from being idle I would think should be the goal,
without giving him time to dwell on anything from the past.
Anything with a challenge to learning or trying something new.
Giving him something to focus on, and using all of his atten-
tion. The advice on asking him what his interests are was
good advice, as how else will you know for sure? You can
make suggestions and see if he's up to trying something new.
But you can't force him. So maybe what I've suggested can
give you a start. The main thing, is that he doesn't become
frustrated or develop an anxiety from any new activity. That would only complicate matters. Maybe since the leaves are falling now, a hike in a park would be just the thing to clear the cobwebs and have a look at nature. I know where I live, it's a wonderful time to enjoy the color of the changing leaves and feel the coolness in the air. Something like a walk, can really do wonders for your psychie and cleanse the soul.
I hope he makes a full recovery soon. And bless you for
wanting to help in your own loving way.  (+ info)

is there a difference between Bipolar NOS and Psychotic Depression?

bipolar as far as i can tell may be a spectrum disorder far beyond the scope of types I, II and cyclothymia. the nos type to me seems to have different sub-categorizations. it seems like the only bipolar type that can involve psychosis is bipolar I. but also possibly NOS? is this true? if so, what are the differences if any between the two?
----------

There is a difference. The bipolar diagnosis captures the cycle of mood swings and may not include any specific psychotic process.

Major Depressive Disorder with psychotic features may be an ongoing depression or a single episode of depression. At times the person experiences the basic symptoms of psychosis.  (+ info)

Sometimes diagnosed with bipolar disorder, other times diagnosed with psychotic depression?

What's the difference and is lithium good for both?
----------

Yes Lithium is good for both. The difference is the mania...... if you have manic or hypomanic episodes then you are bipolar if you don't have mania then you are depressed.  (+ info)

Is there a natural cure out there for weird behavior associated with a psychotic disorder?

Personally i think someone who is psychotic would need to be refined to a secure unit in a psychiatric hospital, but it would depend on the severity of the disorder of course. nothing natural in my opinion would help right such a brain malfunction.
what made you ask this question? just curiosity?  (+ info)

Can Acute Schizophrenia-Like Psychotic Disorder be cured with natural medicines?

NO. Although I would encourage the person with this diagnosis to take advantage of any natural methods available it would be with the very close supervision of their doctor. Natural remedies can have bad reactions with pharmaceuticals so complete transparency to doctor and pharmacist is an absolute must. There are non herbal supports like accupunture that could support treatment without worries of negative interactions.  (+ info)

how can you reconcile with a psychotic abusive family member?

A family member I love has a personality disorder...or is that just phycho babble and the fact is that she is just plain mean and selfish? I asked her to leave me and my family alone and now I feel guilty, how do I reconcile with her and still keep a safe distance?
----------

No, having a personality disorder is not psycho babble. I have
Boarderline Personality Disorder & I am perfectly sane.

What did she do that upset you? That is where to start. We
can't answer your question with such vague info.

If she is just a pest, be nice, explain to her, if she is spending
too much time bothering you, that your busy & she can't come
over today?? Put a limit on the amount of time she spends so
she doesn't drive you nuts. If she is mean & selfish, who are
you to judge? Yes, she has a problem, does that mean you
have to condemn her? If you asked her to leave you alone,
you must have had a good reason? right? I would invite her
to lunch and have a heart to heart talk with her, see where SHE
is coming from - you just might be surprised! Maybe this is the
very thing she needs from you. And don't be afraid to tell her
that she must follow your boundaries - if she becomes unruly,
she'll be asked to leave. I think if you are straight up with her,
she will see the error of her ways. And you will have the time
you need to do whatever without her hanging around 24/7.

A patient believes that her husband has been killed, but he visits her weekly. What psychotic disorder?

"In spite of the fact that her husband was alive and visited her weekly, she maintained that her husband was dead and that he had been killed by the FBI."

This sounds like paranoid schizophrenia to me, but I can't explain why she cannot perceive[?] her husband's presence. Why can't she accept her husband's continued existence?
----------

It may well be Paranoid Schizophrenia. You should consider the very strong possibility that the patient also has Capgrass Syndrome. She believes that her husband has been replaced by a replica of her husband and her husband was actually killed. Capgrass Syndrome fairly often accompanies Schizophrenia. I hope this helps.  (+ info)
