Pyoderma gangrenosum is an uncommon ulcerative cutaneous condition of uncertain etiology. It is a disease that causes tissue to become necrotic, causing deep ulcers that usually occur on the legs. When they occur, they can lead to chronic wounds. PG usually starts suddenly -- often at the site of a minor injury -- as a small pustule, red bump or blood blister. The size and depth of the ulcerations vary greatly, and they are often extremely painful. In approximately 50 percent of cases, PG occurs secondary to another disorder such as inflammatory bowel disease. The skin breaks down, resulting in an ulcer, or ulcers, which may deepen and widen rapidly. The ulcers can become quite large. Some patients will have accompanying fever, malaise, muscle and joint pains. Often the lesion heals leaving a cribriform scar. It tends to occur on the lower extremities, trunk, and occasionally on the head and neck. The diagnosis is based on clinical features and excluding other causes of skin ulcers, as it does not have characteristic histopathology or laboratory findings. Pyoderma gangrenosum is rare.

Pyoderma gangrenosum is thought to be mediated by the immune system, but the exact sequence of events is unknown. It affects approximately 1 person in 100,000 in the population. About half the people with pyoderma gangrenosum have an underlying chronic health condition. Patients with PG may have involvement of other organ systems that manifests as sterile neutrophilic abscesses. Culture-negative pulmonary infiltrates are the most common extracutaneous manifestation. The lesion usually begin as soft raised nodules on the skin which proceed to ulcerate. The ulcers enlarge and the skin at the edge becomes purple-red. PG generally responds well to treatment; however, it sometimes recurs or causes scarring.

Often conventional antibiotics such as flucloxacillin are prescribed prior to making the correct diagnosis.

Corticosteroids help relieve inflammation. Usually pyoderma gangrenosum is treatable with oral corticosteroids, but in some cases the type that you can spread on your skin (topical) may be used.

Intravenous therapies include pulsed methylprednisolone, pulsed cyclophosphamide, infliximab, and intravenous immune globulin.

Tacrolimus ointment is an immune modulating drug that inhibits calcineurin and has been reported to improve pyoderma gangrenosum.

Immunomodulators such as azathioprine or 6-mercaptopurine help reduce the need for corticosteroids and can help heal some fistulas.

Some persons with this disease may need surgery to remove the entire large intestine (colon) with or without the rectum.

Other therapy includes hyperbaric oxygen.  (+ info)

Hi Susan

Here is the best remedy/cure you can use (in my opinion). It's called hydrotherapy. Using hot and cold water to generate blood circulation where the body needs it most. THis process has been used for thousands of years and proved to be one of the most productive. Hot water brings blood to the surface and cold water surpresses it downward, in turn generating new blood cells into the diseased part of the body. Ideally, you also want to use pressure (like strong showerheads) to penetrate the body's depths for quicker results. Also intaking cayenne pepper is the internal king circulator. Moves blood like no other.

I would start by getting a bucket of hot water (hot as you can take it) and an ice filled bucket of water. Just go back and forth with each bucket about a minute each. Do this 10 times or so. Do this 2-3 times a day for as long as it takes to heal.
You could use the showere for this method with the hot and cold water, but most people wont do that.

Here is more information about Hydrotherapy and some testimonials for curing big diseases.

How you can use hydrotherapy at home to SPEED - UP any cure.

The best and cheapest thing any human can do to cure their disease is use water therapy.

You need to do two basic things :

1) Apply hot and cold water, as hot as possible and as cold as you can get it, to a diseased area.

2) Take hot and cold showers, or a hot shower, then jump in a bathtub of ice-cold water, or water with 20 - 40 pounds of ice in it.

The purpose of these two techniques is not torture. It is to BLAST blood into sick areas that are not getting enough blood. Until you do that, expect to stay sick.

There was one man who tired the programs for skin cancer, and they did not work. But he omitted one thing: the hot and cold showers. As soon as he did them, his skin cancer went away.

Simple Rules : For those who are frail, use common sense and start slowly. For instance, on babies, use warm water and cool water. Obviously, be gentle.

To get the most results, work yourself up to using as hot as you can stand it - without burning your skin - and as cold as you can stand it. When I do it at home, I don’t just use cold water. I found it works much better with bags of ice.

You do this at least twice a day. Once is a hot and cold shower, perhaps three of them if you are real sick. You do seven repetitions of hot and cold. If your shower doesn’t get real cold, use ice cubes in a bathtub. If you don’t have a bathtub, perhaps rub yourself with a wet, icy towel. Do your best.

Then, always use hot and cold directly on the sick or injured area - not just all over. This is essential.

For the cayenne oil, here is a simple formula.

A Formula for a cayenne heating oil.

Here is a formula anyone can make.

In a glass jar with a tight leakproof lid, place...

5 tablespoons of the HOTTEST cayenne powder you can find (over 250,000 heat units is suggested.) 20 ounces of Jojoba, Olive or Almond oil.

Make it on the New Moon and let it sit until the Full Moon, making sure to shake it every day. On the Full Moon, press or strain off the liquid.

Caution, this can be extremely hot. Start with a little and work your way up in amount.

Common mistakes made by readers who try hydrotherapy.

Due to timidity, readers under use this treatment. They don’t do it often enough, and they don’t do it strong enough. They don’t like to shiver, or they find it uncomfortable. Forget that. To me, continued sickness is more uncomfortable.

For example, when you are really ill, people should do hot and cold showers as much as 30 minutes a day, three times a day, 2 minutes cold and 5 minutes hot.

For people less ill, try 15 minutes once a day, 7 repetitions each of hot and cold.

Use your imagination. One reader saved his wife from a colon operation by using extremely hot and cold wet towels, back and forth, over her intestinal area.

For people with heart problems.

You can put really hot water, in the shower, or with hot towels, right on the chest, and then alternate with ice cold water or ice, and then go back and forth for seven times.

Start mild, depending on the person’s strength and vitality. Do not overshock them when they are weak. Use good judgement in everything. You can add hydrotherapy to the herbal compresses for serious heart disorders.

Hydrotherapy cured GANGRENE.

Several months ago, a man in the South had gangrene developing. He is an older man, a diabetic. His doctor said if it wasn’t better in days, his right foot was coming off.

He took 6-8 teaspoons a day of extra-extra hot cayenne pepper, in divided doses day and night. He took them in a cold beverage, or it is too hot to get down. The powder form of cayenne is what he used, never capsules. Forget capsules.

Then, he filled two large buckets, one with hot water and one with ice water. He did this and went back and forth. Then he applied a cayenne heating oil to the sick area when he was done. His leg healed, all signs of gangrene are gone.

What he could have done, if he needed to, was to add herbs to the treatment. Here is what can be done, for those who need to know.

Fill a large tub with hot water, add 4 ounces of cayenne pepper powder, 4 ounces of Ginger root powder, and 4 ounces of mustard seed powder. Put these herbs in a dish towel, tie it closed, and put it in the bath like a big tea bag. You will see the water turn orange.

Then, fill a large bucket with cold water plus 10 pounds or more of ice in it. Plastic garbage bins and wash baskets work well for this. Put the leg, or whatever, into the very hot bath for 5 to 10 minutes and then immediately into the cold for at least 2 minutes, but 5 to 8 minutes is much better. Do at least 5 repetitions of this.

A Final word

One of the things that helps out a lot of you reading these old documents and realizing that even if you go to the extreme, you won’t be reaching what was done a hundred years ago.

As far out as it appears you are not even approaching the intensity of what the old healers knew they had to do.

These old people had no choice. It didn’t seem to extreme because, to them, it was much more extreme to die. So nothing they did seemed extreme.

Again, it is more powerful than herbs - because it is the therapy that gets the herbs through the blood to the sick area.

Best of health to both of you

Pyoderma Skin Condition in Dogs?

My dog (a mut, short hair) has superficial pyoderma on the inside of his hind legs. The main skin problem is a bunch of little red circles that are puffy and take up about 1/2 inch on his inner thigh. No pus, but they look like blisters. The vet just put him on cephalexin 500mg two times a day. He weighs 65 pounds and is 1.5 years old. His diet is Blue (natural dog food) combined with organic vegetables. I give him Vitamin E (800 mg a day according to the vet), vitamin C (500mg a day) and salmon oil. What else should I add to his diet?

He has been on the antibiotic now for 4 days and it still looks the same. I put calendula gel and aloe on it. What is a natural way to treat this? What can I give him so he can take internally, not just putting topically on the skin?

His diet has not changed, he does not have fleas and he has never had allergies. Please help. Thanks!

Any home remedies for pyoderma faciale?

I was diagnosed with rosaeca but this is different. Not pustules, just big red cystic bumps in a cluster that never pop, and last for 6 months straight (pyoderma faciale). Anti's don't help, acne meds don't help, and topical anti's for rosaeca dont help. Zeno zit zapper doesn't either. Any advice from anyone else that has this. Cortaid calms the redness down, but the bumps still remain and it has become quite disfiguring. thanks

I have the same problem. I went to my dermotologist and she diagnosed me with this. Its only in my chin area and they hurt so bad. She prescribed me some antibotics and it helped for awhile but it would return. The only remedy that worked for me was my diet. I realized when I stopped eating cheese and fried foods, it disappeared. I recently had some cheese last week and guess what? The next morning, the faciale returned. Try adjusting your diet and see if that works.  (+ info)

Why when I stop taking prednisalone do I get really bad inflamed spots on my face?

Ive been taking prednisalone 20mg on and off for a pyoderma because of bowel disease when I'm taking it my skin clears up nicely but when I stop it my skin gets really spotty and inflamed any ideas??
----------

WOW!!! Sam those last 2 answers were kinda strange huh? What was the 1st answer about with all the Nike stuff?Anyways sorry I'm now just as bad, hahahaaaha!!! I have been on/off Prednisone/prednisalone both are the same thing for my LUPUS (SLE for little over 25 years. And every time I would STOP taking the prednisone I too would start to have some lupus pain/swelling or some bad lupus thing would start up again. All I can suggest Sam is that when you start to come OFF of the prednisalone/prednisone that you slowley taper yourself down from let's say 20mg,then 5 days later 15 mg.then 5 days later 10mg.Basically Sam it ALL really depends on YOU,because this medication is very very sensitive. And it MUST...MUST be slowley tapered down.I will give you an example now....Let's just say that today you take 20mg of prednisalone, and tomorrow you just decide to stop taking it.WOW!!!! Your body will go crazy if your body is used to being on this medication for a while. So,I am sure that your doctor has also told you that you must slowley taper yourself down off of this medication.Maybe you should talk to your doctor about staying on a daily dose of 5mg every day.You have said that you have been taken 20 mg on/off,so a daily 5mg dose might even prevent the bowel disease from flaring up.It's just an idea that maybe you can bring to your doctors attention at least,it is always best to talk with your doctor about ALL of your medical concerns/thoughts.And also these corticosteroids do have some serious side-effects if taken for an extended amount of time.Just talk with your doctor Sam and I hope all is well with you :) always remember to keep smiling :) :) :) :)  (+ info)

can human get pyoderma?

Yes. Pyoderma, in medicine, is a generic word for any infection of the skin that is pyogenic (meaning it is full of pus!) So there are hundreds of different things that can cause pyoderma in us.

There is a more specific disease called pyoderma gangrenosum which is an autoimmune disease where the patient has ulcers (sores) all over his legs. Nobody is really sure what causes it though.  (+ info)
