Is it safe to drink alcohol if you had rheumatic fever and it affected your heart?

Drinking alcohol can cause cardiac arrhythmias. It can also lead to high blood pressure (which puts strain on the heart) and heart failure.

Anyone have a child with rheumatic fever?

My daughter just got out of the hospital with strep and rheumatic fever and I was hoping to find a parent thats been in this situation before.
----------

Rheumatic fever is a nonsuppurative, acute inflammatory complication of group A streptococcal infection, causing combinations of arthritis, carditis, subcutaneous nodules, erythema marginatum, and chorea. Diagnosis is based on applying the Jones criteria to information from history, examination, and laboratory testing. Treatment includes aspirin or other NSAIDs, corticosteroids during severe carditis, and antimicrobials to eradicate residual streptococcal infection and prevent reinfection.  (+ info)

Why does Acute Rheumatic Fever target the mitral valve causing Mitral Valve Stenosis?

I'm doing a research paper on Acute Rheumatic Fever and i can find no peer reviewed article or journals that state why Rheumatic Fever mostly targets the Mitral Valve causing mitral valve stenosis in patients and not other heart valves.

Thanks,
Jason

It is the pressure gradient accross the valve when it opens to allow blood flow that is believed to decide the susceptibility to the rhuematic process. Higher the gradient accross, lower the chance of damge. This is supposed tobe the reason why Mitral valve is most vulnerable.

This is a hypothesis suggested years ago and can make an ideal subject for research.  (+ info)

Can you donate a kidney if you had rheumatic fever in the past,,?

Can you donate a kidney if you had rheumatic fever in the past,, also what if you have herpies or if you are an alcoholic?
----------

I think it all depends on who's doing the screening. Really, if you want to donate a kidney, you should go through the tests and let the doctors make the call. I know in some places they aren't too picky, because there is such a shortage of donors, I've witnessed a brain-dead alcoholic smoker who was still a candidate for transplanting a heart, liver, kidneys, eyes and they were even considering the lungs. Organs do have some regenerative properties so they consider them. Again, if you are serious about donating, make an appointment.  (+ info)

What causes Chorea in Rheumatic Fever?

im havin a hard time understanding how rheumatic fever causes dance like movements? what's the cause of sydenham's chorea in rheumatic fever?
----------

experts suggest that Sydenham's chorea appears to result from such an autoimmune response. Evidence indicates that certain streptococcal proteins or antigens (streptococcal M proteins) induce the body's production of antibodies (i.e., antineuronal antibodies) that "crossreact" against the body's own cells in certain regions of the brain. (Group A streptococcal M protein has been shown to contain some of the same amino acid sequences as within certain human tissues.) Furthermore, some researchers have reported detecting certain antibodies (e.g., immunoglobulin G [IgG] antibodies) in children with Sydenham's chorea that interacted with certain cellular proteins (i.e., neuronal antigens) in the basal ganglia, such as the caudate nuclei and subthalamic nucleus. The basal ganglia are paired nerve cell clusters deep within the brain that play an essential role in initiating and regulating movement.

Is there any proven link between Rheumatic fever & Cardiac artery disease thru inflammation?

Rheumatic fever is a disease caused by autoimmune reaction against the tissues of heart valves. Although the coronary arteries are usually not affected by the inflamation, the destruction or functional impairment of the valves will, left untreated, lead to cardiac hypertrophy, insufficient flow through the coronary arteries and to pathologic changes with the same outcome as in coronary atherosclerosis, i.e. ischemic changes of the myocardium combined with the direct effect of volume and/or pressure overload of the heart chambers.  (+ info)

Is there a link between Rheumatic fever and panic attacks?

or am i just worrying too much?
----------

Rheumatic fever can leave you open to getting illnesses that are bacterial or viral, but it won't give you panic attacks. Those always have a mental cause, usually extreme anxiety. Has anything been going on that is a change in your routine or are you really worried about something in particular? If so, you only need someone to talk your problem through with you. If, however, you panic often and at things most people don't find scary, AND it is affecting your life in a negative way (like not leaving home b/c of fear, constantly fearing being shot and you're not in a high crime area...) these are signs of a chemical imbalance and that would require medication plus therapy.  (+ info)
