What is rheumatic fever? Dietary management of rheumatic fever?

Rheumatic fever is a complication of strep throat caused by Group A strep. It is not an autoimmune disease. It can be a serious consequence of an untreated strep infection and can lead to serious heart damage. This is not something that can be controlled with diet. Please see a physician, or if you have already, take all of the antibiotics that were prescribed.  (+ info)

Does rheumatic fever or its treatment cause sterility in males?

referring to having rheumatic fever 40 years ago.
----------

I know of one case in a woman who was rendered sterile from the high fever she experienced when she had rheumatic fever as a child. It would seem possible for a male if the fever was high and/or prolonged. Treatment may have also played a role, hard to say with so little information.  (+ info)

I had an Type B Aortic Dissection 6 years ago. I just found that i had Rheumatic Fever 1962 i was 6?

Are they related? On my last CT scan my descending thoracic aorta was 4.7cm
----------

Acute dissection of the aorta is when there is a tear in the lining of the aorta, the blood then enters the tear and leads to further tearing which may involve a large section of the aorta. It is due to a weakness/inflammation in the wall of the aorta which may due to Marfan's disease or polyarteritis nodosa. Rheumatic fever attacks the heart valves and lead to things such as mitral/aortic incompetence/stenosis in later life. They are not related at all. In fact I have worked in two African countries and seen lots of rheumatic fever and valvular heart diseases (incompetence/stenosis) but not a single acute aortic dissection.

Was there a program in the 70's in Illinois to give daily Penicillin to any child that Rheumatic Fever?

I recieved a daily dose of Penicillin after having Rheumatic Fever as a 5 yr old. This continued for 12-13 years and may have been part of a University Hospital study. I have never been contacted for follow up, long-term side effect results, or decreased heart problems analysis due to preventative antibiotic treatment. My daily doses stopped over 25 years ago. I know of one other person who recieved the same free medicine for the same reason.
----------

I don't understand your question.

Penicillin is the first line of treatment for Rheumatic Fever, so if a child had RF (and was not allergic to PCN) then they would have been given it....no matter what state they lived in.

Also....Penicillin cannot prevent Rheumatic Fever.  (+ info)

All doctors ask that information on new patient paperwork, not just dentists. Those conditions can make you more suseptable to have a bad reaction to a drug so they keep that information on file for your safety.  (+ info)
