Schistosomiaisis is an infection caused by various species of Schistosoma. They are parasites, a type of flatworm called a trematode (blood fluke). They are transmitted to people by free-swimming larvae (cercariae) in contaminated water that penetrate human skin. You avoid the parasite by not wading/swimming in contaminated water. Depending on the species they affect the liver and /or bladder. There are other species that infect birds and mammals that can cause swimmers itch in people.

I answered your question, which you've asked more than once. Schistosomiasis isn't transmitted from one person directly to another. It's transmitted through skin contact with contaminated fresh water in which certain freshwater snails live and which are hosts to Schistoma blood fluke. The snails release free-swimming larvae which can survive outside a host for 48 hours. They quickly penetrate the skin and enter the bloodstream. From there they can travel to any part of the body, not just the liver.

Fresh water becomes contaminated when an infected person urinates or defecates in the water. Flukes are excreted in urine and feces.

It's not a contagious disease but can be transmitted by the means I described. This is a problem in tropical countries.  (+ info)

Japonica/short grain/sushi rice...?

The only brand of short grain rice that I can find is "Organic Lundburgh" which is really expensive $5 for 2 lbs...anyone know a different brand that I could buy at la place like Meijer, Nino Salvaggios or Costco...
Mahatma makes a short grain white rice and is sold in most supermarkets and Whole Foods also has a variety of japonica rice. I live in California and there are many Japanese markets where its available.  (+ info)

Anyway, thanks for this question, as it had me looking it up. Apparently, it is a real killer around the world, second only to malaria.
