What is acute katayama syndrome? how does it relate to schistosomiasis?

The Katayama syndrome AKA Schistosoma japonicum==this is considered an important parasite and one of the major infectious agents of scistosomiasis. All species can be present in stool the drug most commonly used is prazlquantel 40-60 mg.
Schistosomiasis is caused by digenetic blood trematodes, 3 main species,S. Haematobium. S japonicum. and S.mansoni. This all moves to areas that fit them such as Sjaponicum is more likely to be found in the small intestines and the S mansoni in the small intestines and the S haematobium most often in the bladder however all types can and do move threw the body at will. Any and all types of this infections can move threw the body when want to.Must have contact with water to br infected with this..
This is a disease caused by parasitic worms by snails in fresh water not found in the USA but millions of people have this disease. AKA BIHARZIA. When people who are infected use the potty either one in water this causes snails to come into contact with this then the snail come into contact with human skin.then penetrate the skin.By swimming wading washing bathing this water will cause a disease in the person who does so. Several weeks later the worms will grow inside the blood vessels of a body and lay eggs some do make it to the bladder or intestines then are passed into the urine and stools. Symptoms are caused by the body's reaction to the eggs not so much the worms them selves. There are treatments for this about 2-3 days worth this is present in several countries == Africa, Egypt, Brazil, Suriname, Venezuela, Carbbean, Antigua, Dominican Republic, Guadeloupe, Martinique, Montserrant, Saint Lucia, IRan, Iraq, Saudi, Yemen, S. China, Philippines, Laos, Cambodia, central Indonesia, Mekong delta  (+ info)

Schistosomiasis can someone explain me?

Worms can someone explain me?

forms of transmission?
how to avoid the worm?
Affected organs in the human body?
----------

To summarize-
Schistosomiaisis is an infection caused by various species of Schistosoma. They are parasites, a type of flatworm called a trematode (blood fluke). They are transmitted to people by free-swimming larvae (cercariae) in contaminated water that penetrate human skin. You avoid the parasite by not wading/swimming in contaminated water. Depending on the species they affect the liver and /or bladder. There are other species that infect birds and mammals that can cause swimmers itch in people.

The life cycle ,epidemiology etc is to complicated to go into detail in this forum. Try the CDC link for details http://www.cdc.gov/ncidod/dpd/parasites/schistosomiasis/factsht_schistosomiasis.htm  (+ info)

Is schistosomiasis a contagious disease?

Schistosomiasis of the liver
----------

I answered your question, which you've asked more than once. Schistosomiasis isn't transmitted from one person directly to another. It's transmitted through skin contact with contaminated fresh water in which certain freshwater snails live and which are hosts to Schistoma blood fluke. The snails release free-swimming larvae which can survive outside a host for 48 hours. They quickly penetrate the skin and enter the bloodstream. From there they can travel to any part of the body, not just the liver.

Fresh water becomes contaminated when an infected person urinates or defecates in the water. Flukes are excreted in urine and feces.

It's not a contagious disease but can be transmitted by the means I described. This is a problem in tropical countries.  (+ info)

Is schistosomiasis causes enlarged spleen ?

No, Flukes cause Schistosomiasis. Schistosomiasis is contracted through the skin from fresh water contaminated with urine or faeces of an infected person.

But, symptoms can reflect the site of egg production in the mesentery or bladder wall and liver or spleen etc.  (+ info)

Please include geographic and epidemilogical information if possible

Thanks in advance

Yeah scary parasitic disease
----------

Hi Ryan,
I bet if you asked this question in Polls & Survey category reworded, "Do you know what isSchistosomiasis?" you would get a thousand responses - most of them answering no, me included.
Anyway, thanks for this question, as it had me looking it up. Apparently, it is a real killer around the world, second only to malaria.
I hope this link helps a little. If not, just consider my answer a morning/evening greeting.

What is schistosomiasis?

Schistosomiasis is a systemic infection, and thus a disease, caused by Schistosoma organisms, or flatworms. There are varieties of Schistosoma organisms, mostly parasitic in nature, and they have different pathogenesis, of which includes cutaneous (which involves the skin), intestinal, and even urinary schistosomiasis.

Here is a Wiki link for more info:

And for more in-depth information regarding the organism, here's another one:

What Can You Say About Schistosomiasis?

Schistosomiasis (also known as bilharzia, bilharziosis or snail fever) is a parasitic disease caused by several species of fluke of the genus Schistosoma.

Although it has a low mortality rate, schistosomiasis often is a chronic illness that can damage internal organs and, in children, impair growth and cognitive development. The urinary form of schistosomiasis is associated with increased risks for bladder cancer in adults. Schistosomiasis is the second most socioeconomically devastating parasitic disease after malaria.

This disease is most commonly found in Asia, Africa, and South America, especially in areas where the water contains numerous freshwater snails, which may carry the parasite.

The disease affects many people in developing countries, particularly children who may acquire the disease by swimming or playing in infected water.

NEED YOUR REACTIONS TO THIS ILLNESS PLEASE. THANKS! any related reactions may do. *wink*

Oh my goodness! So not only should you avoid drinking the water when traveling to affected countries; you also have to be very careful about coming into contact with any freshwater, including while bathing.  (+ info)
