What happens if someone fractures their skull?

Um, today my bestfriend fell and fractured her skull. I'm just wondering if this could be fatal or not. I'm really worried. If you have any advice on how I can deal with this as well as an answer to my question I would really appreciate it.
----------

Hopefully she went to the ED via ambulance and a neurosurg saw her, did CT scan and evacuated any bleeding. She will have concussion sx, contralateral, meaning the brain gets injured on both sides when slammed. She will have post concussion symptoms for many years, these can be headaches, panic attacks, nausea, balance problems, speech.. It can be fatal if it was an open wound/bleeding, can be fatal if pressure on the brain not relieved, the brain will herniate downward through the foramen magnum (base of skull where spinal cord and other important anatomy is located) and death is for sure. I've seen it. it's awful. If other injuries involved, in cervical neck, paralysis is possible. I hope she is ok. People can be symptomatic for months or be in the ICU for awhile, also, on ventilators, get pneumonia and other hosp germs . Hopefully, she will get good nursing care and oral/dental care.  (+ info)

Any idea how long skull fractures take to heal?

My daughter fractured her skull in 3 places & doctors just said it will take as long as it takes. Anyone out there with experience who can give me some advice?
----------

My daughter had a severely depressed skull fracture from a car ejection. The neurologist said she had 6-8 weeks to decide if she wanted it surgically corrected. (Her head is all dented) After that amount of time it starts to fuse back together. Total healing time in her case was about 4 months.  (+ info)

Is it normal for a hospital to release someone that has been in an accident with a skull and 4 rib fractures?

I was in an accident in which I was unconscious. I found myself in ambulance and then later woke up in hospital. I was released complaining of pain in chest and coughing up blood. I later found out a little over a month after accident that I had fractured rib 5 Through 8. I had gone to two emergency rooms complaining of discomfort and pain.
----------

No, that's not normal. Sounds to me like hospital number 1 dropped the ball and released you when you should have been admitted.
Might seriously want to consider calling a lawyer if your still in pain or are having other issues now because of it.  (+ info)

Can a radiologist differentiate wormian bones from fractures in an infants skull CT?

I was just wondering if a radiologist can tell the difference between a wormian ridge/bone and a fracture when looking at a head CT of a child. Our grandson jumped off of the sofa (onto a concrete slab floor with a thin carpet covering it) onto his head and after the CT we found out he has wormian bones. But, the overprotective doc claims our grandson has a fracture and his trauma was non accidental. The leap was witnessed and both parties involved passed polygraphs.
Can they really tell the diff between a fracture and a wormian bone with 100% certainy?
----------

I've just read this article on The GE Medcyclopedia page ( they make several innovative medical scanning & imaging machines). The term is named after a Danish anatomist in 1586.Presence of these intra-sutural bone deposits are commonly associated with lamboid suture of the skull in infants. They are considered pathological when they reach a size of 5x4 mm or greater, less than 10 in number, and are arranged in a mosaic pattern. There are several pathological associations to these small bones, but the majority of these findings are simply normal varients. Depending on the childs age,and any previous head CT's to compare this recent one,it would be tricky. I would have the local Radiologist consult with a Professor of Radiology at your state's Medical school,or at its teaching Hospital Medical Center.Medical staff are trained to react to any cases of abuse, real or suspected.By law they must report their findings. Please try to curb your fearless grandson. When my son was small,he loved to jump off things and tried to fly on many occasions.! Take care. SW RNP  (+ info)

Do all skull fractures require surgery?

I've recently been hit with a baseball on the left side of my head. No cut. I've only been feeling dizzy. The doctor said I have a skull fracture. If I do not need surgery how long should it take to recover and what can I do to help the recovering process?
----------

I fractured my skull twice, once from a car accident, once from my brothers baseball bat. No surgery was required for either, it just had to heal on its own. That took about 2 months. Hurt quite a bit, and I had to be very careful with my head, but, everything turned out fine.  (+ info)

Can anyone help with anatomy on skull fractures?

Maybe someone can but I cannot without you giving more information.  (+ info)

Differentiating skull fractures?

How would you tell the difference between a skull fracture caused by an object verses that of a fall?
How would u differentiate a skull fracture caused by an object versus a fall?

I should add it's for a book & the guy's dead.
----------

im sure doctors can tell,by doinga ct scan and a mri scan..  (+ info)

Question about skull fractures?

I need some information for a novel, so any doctors, nurses, or patients, I'd love your help!

If someone had a depressed skull fracture (caused by someone hitting them with a ski pole), but it wasn't terribly deep, how would a hospital go about treating them? There would be a surgery, right? Would there be stitches? How long would they keep her in the hospital, minimum, if she went through the surgery without any hitches?
Well, a ski pole is made of metal, so theoretically, isn't it pretty similar to a hammer?
----------

I honestly don't think you could fracture someones skull with a ski pole. A hammer more like it.
If the fracture wasn't that deep and pieces of the skull were not penetrating the brain, then surgery would not be needed. There would only be stitches if the scalp was cut.

My daughter had a depressed skull fracture. She was border line for surgery. Her's was from her temple to the back of her ear. She ended up not having surgery because of other serious injuries. No stitches, and she was in the hospital for 11 days. The Neurosurgeon gave her the option of having the surgery for cosmetic reasons. She had up to 6 weeks after her accident to decide.  (+ info)

Question about recovery from an extremely minor skull fracture?

If you sustained the most minor of skull fractures (a very small, closed, linear, hairline fracture in an area away from any major blood vessels or nerves etc.), with no other complications such as brain injury etc., how long would it take until A) you could return to normal relaxed every day activities (such as going to the office), and B) how long until it would completely heal?
----------

If there's no associated brain injury, there's no reason to restrict activity. A brain injury is what's dangerous, the skull's just the casing around it.
It'd take around 6 weeks for the fracture to completely heal  (+ info)

can a cat scan show skull fractures.?

Had a cscan done 10 days after forehead injury due to a fall. got mild headaches so had ca cscan done 10 days later, it was normal. does a cscan show skull fractures?
----------

Yes, a cat scan can show fractures since it involves x-rays.

CAT scanning adds x-ray images with the aid of a computer to generate cross-sectional views of anatomy.
CAT scanning can identify normal and abnormal structures and be used to guide procedures.
CAT scanning is painless.
Iodine-containing contrast material is sometimes used in CAT scanning. Patients with a history of allergy to iodine or contrast materials should notify their physicians and radiology staff.

((If you're still worried about your headaches, you might have a soft tissue injury and should consult a doctor, if you're not already under care. Though CAT scans do show bone injuries and some soft-tissue injuries, they CAN miss soft-tissue problems))  (+ info)
