How do doctors treat a fractured skull?

I'm wondering what a doctor would do if a patient was admitted with a fractutred skull from a car accident. What if a CAT scan was not available? What complications could there be?
Depends on the type of skull fracture. My daughter was ejected from a car, and suffered a severely depressed skull fracture & a basilar skull fracture.

On a depressed skull fracture there's a very obvious dent in the head. If the pieces are sticking into the brain, then surgery is needed to pull the pieces out. Usually a metal plate is then put in. Depending on how far into the brain the splinters go determines how much brain damage.

My daughters depressed fracture was noticed first on a standard x-ray. The Basialr skull fracture didn't show up for around 4-5 days. The only reason she went back for more CT scans is she was deaf in one ear, and leaking fluid from her nose.  (+ info)

I had a fracted skull 3 years ago and they had to remove a piece of skull to take away a blood clot and they replaced the skull peice, I was just wondering if it is safe to skydive becasue my skull might be weak.

I tried to do a double front flip on a trampoline, but I landed wrong and my knee came into my face and fractured part of my skull. Does that type of fracture require surgery?
skull fractures can kill you.

I still have pain and swelling, remembering, doing simple math, or trying to figure easy stuff out. Someone who has went through a fractured skull can you tell me if you have had these problems. I've been to the dr. she said it will be awhile before I get better. But how long? It has been three months.

I am 18 years old and when I was in the 5th grade I fell of of a golf cart and fractured my skull. I have been having bad migraines everyday for about a year now. Could this be from fracturing my skull?
I don't think the fractured skull from back then is the problem. An undiagnosed gluten intolerance can cause migraines and going on a gluten free diet might just slove your problem. Many people are gluten intolerant but have no idea that they are as symptoms vary widely between different people. Gluten sensitivity is now known to cause hundreds of the medical ailments that are plaguing society today, but sadly the knowledge is not getting out there to the people who need to know. It is not taught at medical school, so doctors don't test for it.

what happens to a person that has an untreated skull fracture for yrs?

i have had someone hit me in the head all over and i have many depressions in my skull and they are drepressed into my brain. someone kept me from knowing what they did to me and kept my confind somewhere until i healed and made me forget that it even happened. they have been using powers against me for yrs keeping me from knowing what has happened to me.
As frost said, your skull has healed as best as it can. If you are suffering depression that you think is related to this or there are other problems your next step is to see a doctor and you will need to explain exactly what you think may be going on. I'm writing a story where currently the main character was involved in a car accident. She has suffered a broken leg, two cracked ribs and a fractur to her skull. She is a young character. How long would it take to heal roughly?
Healing times vary from person to person, but 6 weeks is a standard guideline for a broken leg, about the same for ribs if the person doesn't re-injure them and 6 weeks to a year for a skull fracture depending on the size and location. You can have a shorter length of time if she's a quick healer, a longer time if she's not, and don't forget pain tolerance which differs from person to person also. Someone with a high tolerance for pain could be up and abut in a much shorter period of time.  (+ info)

A few years ago, I fell down the stairs and smashed my head on the ground hard. I feel a dent in the skull. I am fine now, but I can still feel the dent. It happened 3 years ago. Do you think I was jsut lucky? because undoubtably, i had a skull fracture.
Nothing will happen. My daughter was thrown from a rolling car and suffered severe skull fractures. Her depressed skull fracture runs from her temple to the back of her ear. She was borderline for surgery, as she had alot of other injuries including a badly broken neck. The only time surgery is necessary is when pieces of the skull penetrate the brain. With my daughter the bleed in her head was small, and did not grow larger. She was kept in the trauma unit to monitor her brain. The Neurologist told us if the brain injury was going to get worse it would happen within 48-72 hours. After that time frame, most of the danger has passed.
My daughter had the option of having the fracture plated . She had 6 weeks after the accident to decide. After 6-8 weeks the skull starts to repair itself. She opted not to have the surgery, as she didn't want to shave her hair off. If you run your finger along her head, you can feel the dents.  (+ info)
