Can Spina Bifida Occulta lead to tailbone problems in adults?

I was born with it and it hurts for me to sit up right in a chair for more than 20 minutes. I always have to have my body at an angle with me laying back. Don't really want to go to the doctor about it bc i don't want anyone looking at my butt.
----------

That is what occulta is. It is when the tailbone is messed up. So, yes it can cause pain. You need to see a neurologist to have an MRI to make sure you don't have tether cord which can be caused by spina bifida occulta.  (+ info)

Those with a child with spina bifida occulta, is your child overweight?

I have three children, the middle child has SBO and is quite chunky. The other two are like bean poles.

The health visitor mentioned that she might be overweight because of the SBO as she eats the same amount of food as the others.

What are your experiences? I don't understand how it could cause you to be overweight.
I am specifically refering to spina bifida occulta, not spina bifida.
----------

It depends. Some of us with the most severe are normal size. I am a tiny bit overweight, but not much. However, I know a lot of people with myelomeningocele that are. It just depends on the person and the activity that the person does or can do.

edit: Spina Bifida and Occulta are the same thing. Just different levels and open verses closed. Not much different.  (+ info)

Does anyone know anything about a tethered cord or spina bifida occulta?

My son is 2 1/2 months old and he has a tethered cord. He is scheduled to have surgery in dec when he is 9 months old. I am wondering if this is too long to wait because if symptoms start they can not be reversed. The surgeon wants to wait until he is bigger to do the surgery. I am just wondering if anyone has had the surgery or their children. Also what to expect. I am so scared to have it done but I know he really needs it. Any advice would be good advice. Thank you.
He does have a small dimple on his back
----------

my son had a Deep dimple in the lumbo-sacral area when he was born. and the pediatrician was worried he might too have a tethered cord. come to find out with a 'butt' sonogram that he didnt have it. most of the time babies who have the deep dimple, its just a dimple... sorry to hear about your baby having to have surgery
here is some good sites to read up more on the subject (good luck to you and your baby)

I'm 14 yoa and my doctor told me and my mom that I have Spina Bifida Occulta?

I play four sports, football, basketball, baseball, and I swim for my school. He didn't tell me if I can still continue playing these sports but to make a dairy of when my bowels move and when I have back pain
Does this limit my athletics?
----------

That would be something to ask your neurologist, but I wouldn't stop what you are doing unless you have pain.  (+ info)

Can someone help me with spina bifida occulta?

Im 15 and they just realized i have this condition. I know its the most mild form but some of the symptoms of this are Depression, loss of bladder control, and overwieght, and loss of bowel control. I have all of these symptoms. Is there any surgerys to correct the problem even at 15. Im willing to try surgery, even if elective. Im really open to any suggestions. please help.

can someone give me information about it.
----------

I have a friend with this condition and if it had occurred any higher on her spine she would be cripple or worse. She found out about it at 22 when she got an x-ray of her full body from a chiropractor. She cannot drink alcohol in large amounts due to the toxins leaving her stomach and hitting her spinal cord making her sick very easily, no danger of her becoming an alcoholic!
This early detection and treatment by a competent medical provider is in your favor and be happy you know why these symptoms are occurring rather than suffering random things that are attributed to the turmoil of teenage hormones. When my friend went to her Doctor in the 1980's as a teen for depression and poor metabolism he told her it was all in her head and to quit bothering her parents with hysterics.

Can anyone help me with spina bifida occulta?

Im 15 and (this is not a self diagnosis) they just realized i have this condition. i have dimples on my lower back and a big hairy patch they also found proof on an xray. I know its the most mild form but some of the symptoms of this are Depression, loss of bladder control, and overwieght, and loss of bowel control. I have all of these symptoms. Is there any surgerys to correct the problem even at 15. Im willing to try surgery, even if elective. Im really open to any suggestions. please help

This is really something to discuss with your parents and especially with your doctors.
They must have told you something other than "you have spina bifida occulta." Did they tell you about possible treatments or therapies or anything like that? Did they tell you about how to manage your condition? Did they tell you about support groups?
If they didn't, you need to ask.  (+ info)

I have just been diagnosed with spina bifida occulta...what are the treatment options for this disease?

What are my treatment options, is surgery necessary? If so, what does that involve? Thankyou
I am in constant pain and it it causing problems with my legs.
----------

first it isn't a disease. It is a birth defect. Surgery isn't necessary unless you have tether cord that is causing symptoms like bowel and bladder problems or pain. See a neurologist or neurosurgeon.  (+ info)
