Is there a medical specialty that deals with auto immune diseases in canada?

I have just been diagnosed with a forth autoimmune disease -- MS, spinal stenosis, chronic ITP, and now sjogren's syndrome. Enough is enough. I've got a specialist for each disease. Obviously my body is fighting itself on many fronts and I need a specialist in autoimmune diseases. Is there such a specialist?> I'm in Ontario Canada and I'm devastated.

A rheumatologist usually deals with autoimmune diseases, but some people also see a neurologist for MS.  (+ info)

What other diseases is associated with demyelinating disease besides MS?

I had a MRI done where they found demyelinating disease and thinks that it's multiple sclerosis I have several of the symptoms for MS I have to get a spinal tap done.
----------

Besides MS, there are several other demyelinating diseases, such as the leukodystrophies (Adrenoleukodystrophy, Canavan Disease, Krabbe Disease, Pelizaeus-Merzbacher Disease, Cockayne Syndrome, and Alexander's Disease), Marchiafava-Bignami Disease, Central pontine myelinolysis, and Progressive Multifocal Leukoencephalopathy (PML). Among other things, the spinal tap will help to rule out some of the other demyelinating diseases. Some of these are fairly unlikely (for example, Adrenoleukodystrophy occurs when more than 90% of the adrenal cortex is destroyed, and is a very rare condition, so you'd likely have far more symptoms without a functioning adrenal cortex).

The "white spots" visible on an MRI are generally pretty specific for MS; in other words, for certain white spot patterns, only MS produces such patterns on an MRI. That, along with the other tests (blood tests and lumbar puncture) can rule out the other causes of white spots on an MRI.

The referenced site has loads of (mostly medical) information about all of these diseases, but it may be helpful to you. You can look up each disease individually and find some information on them.

Good luck.  (+ info)

How do they not pierce the spinal cord in an LP?

In an LP( Lumbar Puncture), they take a sample of the CSF (Cerebrospinal fluid) to test for infections or other diseases. Well, what I'm wondering is how do they not pierce it?
----------

The spinal cord ends at the inferior border of L1 (slightly lower in infants) and is several vertebral spaces above the proper location for a lumbar puncture which is L3 and L4. So basically...the needle never really gets near it.  (+ info)

Can you get mad cow disease by eating any beef from an infected cow, or is it just by eating the spinal cord?

I've heard that the brain, spinal cord and other central nervous system tissue is where the disease is found. Would steak be ok to eat?
----------

Well 'officially', it would be OK to have a steak - scientific studies on cows with BSE have found no infectivity in muscle or peripheral nerves. However, these were studies using carefully dissected animals. In reality, due to the way meat is processed you could never guarantee that any part of an infected cow was OK to eat. And although infectivity has not been detected in the blood of infected cows, the blood of people with vCJD (which is the human version of BSE) IS infectious. But these days BSE is thankfully very rare, so it's certainly not something to worry about.  (+ info)

What are the risks of having spinal steriod injections?

I have lumbar disc disease- what are the pros and cons of spinal injections?
----------

The injections are usually depot preparations of steroids. It is wrong to say that they are spinal injections because they do not go into the spinal cavity.
They generally exert a local effect , and can be said to be generally harmless unless used for a continuous long period exceeding two months.

Please see the following site. The possible side effects in your case is the same as described below

I want to find out the estimated cost for a lumbar spinal fusion?

I want to find out the estimated cost for a two-level lumbar spinal fusion surgery (L4-5 & L5S1) including surgeon fees, hospital and anesthesia cost. This is for degenerative disease, with significant spinal stenosis. I live in Texas, but will accept the info from any part of the US. Please identify the source.
----------

I found this posting from a user named Elaine on Health Boards.com:

"I had L5/S1 fusion with hardware in 2000. Two years later I had L4/L5 fusion. Both surgeries cost about the same. The first one was done in Illinois.Hospital was $58,000, surgeon was $34,000. All the hospital was covered by insurance. The doctor part sucked. They paid a little under $10,000, the doctor wrote off $10,000 and I am stuck paying the rest at $100.00 a month. In December I had the second fusion in Bakersfied,CA. Bills were close to the same, the difference being the hospital settled for $13,000, the rest was wrote off. The doctor agreed to $14,000, the rest was wrote off. I ended up paying a total of $99.00 to the doctor. Both were over seven hour surgeries. I have my rods and screws from the first fusion, they are unreal. To think they actually put this hardware in your back."

What is the condition of holes in spinal bone called?

Years ago, I was diagnosed with 'Scheuermann's Disease' and shown Xrays which disclosed holes in the spinal bone.
Today I found out via a web site, that Scheuermanns Disease is about spinal curvature! I do not have a curved spine AT ALL. So I went and tried to find out what holes in the spinal bone is actually called. I could not find this data. I tried to use the contact button, but that was for clinical trials only. So, I decided to pose my question here on yahoo. Does anyone here know the answer??
Note: the hole/s in the bone were LARGE and I was told 'the bone had been eaten away' they were not small and I believe he referred to them as "schmal's nodes" or something similar (it was a long time ago!)

It is called

Hydromyelia and syringomyelia  (+ info)
