What is the difference between epidural and spinal block? What are their specific indications?

I know the area where to administer epidural anesthesia (between the ligamentum flavum and the dura mater) as well as with the spinal block (in the subarachnoid space between the arachnoid mater and the pia mater). But I don't know if what are the scope of difference covered between the two when it comes to indications. Can you give light to my confusion? Thank you [",]
----------

The big difference is that epidural anesthesia is continuously delivered through an infusion pump through an indwelling epidural catheter whereas as spinal anesthesia is a one time dose of anesthesia injected using a spinal needle. Their placement areas are generally the same.  (+ info)

I need to fly a day after spinal surgery (discetomy) for a funeral. Am I in serious risk? How soon can I fly?

I just had spinal surgery this morning - a discetomy - and I found out this afternoon that a close family member is on life support. I need to fly cross country to tend to important family considerations as soon as possible, but I am scared about the complications after surgery so soon. I would appreciate the advise of medical doctors given this unique situation. Thank you in advance for your time.
----------

Just call your doctor's office and ask whoever picks up the phone (: If they don't know the answer, they can find a doctor close by who does. Good luck and God Bless.  (+ info)

Can a antistegolist control how high a spinal block goes up?

Im going on my 3rd c-section in a week. And my question is,is for an Antistegolist. Can you control how high you make the numbness go up(SPINAL BLOCK) Because i have heard it can go clear up to the chest and you loose your sense of breathing and the nurses have to bag you and help you breath. Is this true is it dangerous? Will i stop breathing or does it just feel like you can't breath when in fact you can?
----------

The anesthesiologists are highly trained professionals! In all my years of working in hospitals I've never heard of them messing up so I think you're in good hands... complications are the exception rather than the rule... I understand your nervousness... They will almost ALWAYS give you a one-on-one interview with the anesthesiologist or anesthetist before any surgery so you'll have a chance to talk directly with them. Don't be worried.... I've had the spinals and they take great care in doing things correctly... no matter how long it takes... So don't be worried, OK??? Good luck and CONGRATULATIONS!!!!!  (+ info)

What is the most common tumor of the spinal cord?

How is the heart rate affected by a spinal cord injury?

Will the vagus nerve be affected or is it something to do with the spinal cord?
----------

It depends a bit on where the injury occurs.

The vagus nerve shouldn't be injured by a spinal cord injury (it comes down with the carotid artery, fairly anterior to the spinal column). The vagus nerve is parasympathetic, secretes acetylcholine and slows the heart rate.

The sympathetic nerves in the thoracic area (I forget the details)... these ARE likely to be severed by a high thoracic spinal cord injury. These secrete norepinephrine and tend to accelerate the heart rate. They also maintain blood vessel tone pretty much everywhere.

So if you cut the spinal cord in such a way that you lose sympathetic function but the vagus is intact... what would you expect to happen to the heart rate?

Good luck!  (+ info)

How long does it take for a L45 spinal fusion to heal?

I had a spinal fusion 2 1/2 weeks ago and it's feeling better (incision pain) but I'd like to know how long it will take before the pain is gone. Simple as that. Thanks for your answers in advance!
----------

I think it can take a few months for pain to subside with rehab.

Healing occurs similarly to any fracture. To see some healing of bone on x-ray takes about 6 weeks.
To see bone graft healing on x-ray can take 3-4 months & recovery continues up to a year post surgery.  (+ info)

What are the risks and benefits of a spinal cord stimulator?

I'm contemplating a spinal cord stimulator for RSD, and pain in my right arm. My doctor gave me some videos, but they're really commercial. It doesn't mention any of the risks. Thank You!

There are a lot of people with RSD who have answered this question at http://www.raceagainstpain.com. Search through the forums and you'll find some really good information.  (+ info)

How long does the headache last with a spinal?

I had a c-section on may 31 of this year. They gave me a spinal and I have had the worse headache since then. I didnt notice it as much when I was on the stronger pain killers, but now that I am off of them, it's horrible. How much longer will this last?
----------

It is drug side effect.
pl see what suits you.
If you are in cold country use all warm things.
Pl try cold water bath and observe if in hot country, if pain increases use warm.
If you have cough/cold body hot water bath will help.
Massage and exercise in front of morning sun is good thing, pl try.
Pl try simple acupressure given below for immediate relief.
If it fails you will have to go for Acupuncture.

There is hardly any medicine for H/A OR MIGRAINE. Not only these but for RA, OA, Back ache, Ear ache/ringing, Stomach ache and almost all painful diseases. Hence they become chronic.

Acidity, WORRY, sadness, excessive wind, cold , heat, sour food and sinusitis, constipation, intestinal inflammation; drug side effects, stress, bad smell, TV & COMPUTER SOMETIMES, Blockage in the flow of Vital Energy, BODY CONSTITUTION etc are their causes.
None of them can be treated with medicine.
Our 100% success in treating migraine &H/A confirms it.

Acupuncture is the best treatment.
I can treat it with naturopathy and YOG, but how can you manage pl see.

Pain killers don't treat the pain but we loose the sense of pain for some time; in that duration our body itself treats sometime and credit goes to meds.
The useless drugs have tremendous power of side effects like liver/kidney failures, ulcer, inflammation of intestines and lot more.

Avoid late sleeping if possible; worry, tension, spicy foods, sour fruits, stale bakery foods, SMOKING and alcohole.

Sweet foods, COCOANUT WATER,sweet fruits like dates, milk, rice, SPROUTS, SALADS and good sleep will help if cough is not there. If cough use steamed pulses, salads, sprouts, honey and dates, warm water.

But you try one herbal remedy- two drops of drumstick leaves' juice in opposite nostril if one side pains and both nostrils if full H/A will give you rescue. Betel leaf helps but it is very strong.

If it is acute pl search a painful point (with round tipped pen/jimmy) 3-6 mm behind your thumb nail and press it, H/A will disappear within 30 seconds.

For forehead/eye pain the points are in front of nails on the finger tips or 3-7 mm below.

It may disappear naturally too.

What anitibiotics can lower white blood cell count in spinal fluid?

Just as stated in title. What anitibiotics are there to use to lower white blood cell count in spinal fluid?
----------

Antibiotics don't directly affect white cell count in any fluid.
If there's a bacterial infection, it causes the cell count to go up as the body tries to fight the infection. If the right antibiotic is used to fight the infection, the cell count goes down as the infection heals.
So, first you have to identify why the white cell count is up. Bacterial infection is only 1 possible cause, and it's the only cause that can be treated successfully with antibiotics. If it is bacterial, then you have to pick the antibiotic that works for that specific bacteria. There is no single antibiotic that will work in every situation.  (+ info)

Would you feel comfortable if you had to have spinal/back surgery and the surgeon was a scarved muslim woman?

I am really planning to become a neurologist (the one who does surgery on the nerves, back, and spinal cord)when i grow up. im muslim and i want to help other people feel better cuz my dad had a disk herniation. I know that many people suffer from this but dont recieve help. But i am worried that a lot of people would not be comfortable enough to have surgery and have me operate on them lol. I dont see many Muslim surgeons either (women)Would you be ok with it?
----------

I wouldn't care one bit. People should only concerned with how competent a surgeon is. Not with what he/she wears.

Go for it!  (+ info)
