StArVaTiOn?

I have a problem! My friend is 22 years old and she has been battlaling with weight since I can remember. She has lost weight drastically in the past 2 months! I have been watching her and she is starving herself. She does not admit it, but I have been watching her. on april I went to the doctor with her and she weighed 132 pounds now she weights 99 pounds! That is incredible considering that she is saying that she is not dieting. I want to know how much weight can you loose from starvation in 2 months? I want to be sure before I aproach her! Thank you very much!

I understand that this is not the answer you were looking for. Starving yourself is very unhealthy, and your friend needs to know that. Explain to her about the dangers of Anorexia. Remind that starvation can also kill you.  (+ info)

Starvation....................................?

Not literal starvation, but how long would you have to barely eat to start noticing any sort of weight loss? And please do not give me tips about healthy weight loss, exercising, eating right, because I know all of that. I'm just wondering about this specific question. So, please limit your answers to just being about my question.
I'm not looking for answers I already know. I didn't ask what would happen afterwards, did I?

You can starve maybe for about a week, and see a pound or 2. after 3 weeks you would loose significant weight If you make it that long without dieing.  (+ info)

starvation during pregnancy? How long can a baby live inside a womb before dieing of starvation?

Most people can live up to 2 months without eating anything,
fat people can live up to 7 months without eating anything.
Im wondering because of people who starve in different countries but are still able to make babies.
How long can the fetus stay inside the womb before dieing of starvation?
starvation meaning, no eating anything at all.
doesn't the baby die first?
are there any websites with this kind of research?

There are always nutrients in the body. Baby takes all that it need from mom and mom gets the left overs.

If mom dies, then so does baby.  (+ info)

How long does it take for starvation mode to begin?

I have a friend who is convinced she is fat, even though she is only a UK size 10. She hasn't been eating for a week or so and already she looks aweful. I don't mean thin aweful, she just looks pale and tired all the time. I'm really concerned about her as I have heard of starvation mode and the effects of what it can do to people. Naturally i am terrified that this could happen to her. How long will it be until she starts starvation mode and is it possible she will get poorly?
----------

Your friend is doing a very dangerous thing by not eating. In fact starving the body is doing more harm than good. A body needs daily nutrients and vitamins to stay healthy. People in concentration camps were starved to death and many died within two or three weeks. And surprisingly it was the fatter ones who succumbed to the starvation first. To lose weight it is essential to eat breakfast because the stomach juices get to work and start to break down any stored fats in the body. Moving around helps the breaking up of that fat and so exercise is important. It does not need to be a full workout, a brisk walk for 20 minutes is enough. But most importantly it is essential to eat three small meals a day at least. As long as you are healthy this will be sufficient and losing weight should not be difficult. Ensure a balanced diet, no fried foods, no fats and reduce salt and sugar intake. Taking a vitamin supplement would also be a good idea.  (+ info)

What happens to a person suffering starvation when they are suddenly given food?

I'm writing a crime drama and my killer is starving his victim to death -- oh the crazy notions of a writer's mind...

I recall from a 'way back when' history class that the instructor told us that Allied forces who first arrived to liberate WWII prison camps, accidentally attributed to the death of prisoners by giving them their K-rations and chocolate, but I don't know WHY this killed them. Or how.

Internally, what exactly happens when a person suffering starvation is given solid foods?

How exactly does this kill them?
----------

Shock. The body, being accustomed to having low amounts of nutrition, can't handle the sudden influx of food. The body actually uses alternative chemicals during starvation (meaning, not glucose). The body might not even have enough energy to break down the given food, rendering it useless and could be considered toxic.

For treatment, liquids with the most basic of basic nutrients should be provided first. Water with sugar would suffice, though if you put in the wrong concentration (deviant to that in intravenous bags), you could harm the person as well.

Or, for bloodier (i.e. more apt to a crime drama) reasons, the stomach and internal organs, due to lack of bulk food, atrophy and weaken. It's a muscle, see. And without 'exercise', it gets weaker and weaker. The stomach could rupture, and it all goes downhill from there.   (+ info)

What are the physical steps/symptoms of starvation in a place where you only have access to water?

If a woman were marooned on a deserted island and her only resources were fresh water and sand, what would happen to her? What are the usual physical steps of starvation- fatigue, weight loss, loss of mental acuity, what else?
----------

Individuals experiencing starvation lose substantial fat (a.k.a. adipose) and muscle mass as the body breaks down these tissues for energy. Catabolysis is the process (medical condition) of a body breaking down muscles and other tissues in order to keep vital systems—such as the nervous system and heart muscle (myocardium) —working. Catabolysis will not begin until there are no usable sources of energy coming into the body. Vitamin deficiency is also a common result of starvation, often resulting in anemia, beriberi, pellagra, and scurvy. These diseases collectively may cause diarrhea, skin rashes, edema, and heart failure. Individuals are often irritable and lethargic as a result.

Atrophy (wasting away) of the stomach weakens the perception of hunger, since the perception is controlled by the percentage of the stomach that is empty. Victims of starvation are often too weak to sense thirst, and therefore become dehydrated.

All movements become painful due to atrophy of the muscles, and due to dry, cracked skin caused by severe dehydration. With a weakened body, diseases are commonplace. Fungi, for example, often grows under the esophagus, making swallowing unbearably painful.

The energy defiency inherent in starvation causes fatigue and renders the victim more apathetic over time. Interaction with one's surroundings diminishes as the starving person becomes too weak to move or even eat.  (+ info)

How long does it take to recover from starvation mode?

Hi, I am 13 years old, 5'3 and about 93 pounds. I had anorexia for about 3 months and lost about 10-12 pounds. I know my body went into starvation mode. I lost my period this moth and was freaked out. How long will it take to recover? I know I am going to gain a lot of fat, but I want to know for how long, so then after I can start building muscle back up. Or am I stuck like this forever?
----------

You stomach is smaller. If you want to gain weight you need to keep yourself feeling full so you can eat more at a sitting. That can take a week or three.

You can start building muscle as soon as you are no longer underweight. Just start eat normal amounts of food. Take a vitamin. Start forcing yourself to exercise. It takes 2 to 4 weeks of exercise before your body will get use to doing them. For the first few it will feel like dragging yourself into it for each time. Keep the workouts light to start. Overdoing it is the biggest beginner's mistake.

Also build up a large enough collection of exercises that you can vary your workout every day. Doing the same workout day after day raises the risk of injury and builds muscle resistance to those exercises achieving anything.  (+ info)

How do I lose weight without going into starvation when already eating 1200 and exercising?

I go running about 2-3 miles every day and gaining muscle! I'm happy with the amount of muscle I have, a little too much but mostly I just want to lose the fat. However I don't want to slow down my metabolism a lot and go into starvation mode. I'm starting to drink green tea a little bit. Also I eat very healthily, getting in all my vegs and fruits everyday. What should I do?? Is there anyway I can keep my metabolism up without gaining more muscle?
----------

Switch up your workout to do some other type of cardio exercise 2 or 3 days a week, instead of running (for at least 1 hr). It can be bicycling, swimming, dancing, aerobics workouts, or whatever works for you. Throw in a yoga workout also, for good muscle toning (but it won't build any bulk, just tone and help with flexibility).

When you get into a routine, your body adjusts to that pattern and you have to change it up from time to time or your body will stop responding. You might also want to up your calories to 1500 one day a week and 1800 on another day...don't let your body get used to getting the same amount of cals every day either.

Mix it up...when you hit your goal, then you can find a routine that works for maintenance.  (+ info)
