What is the connection between malignant neoplasms and crabs?

The more common term for malignant neoplasms, cancer, is Latin for crab, and the word "carcinogen," meaning a cancer-causing agent, comes from the Greek word for crab, "karkinos." What is the connection between these two seemingly unrelated things?
----------

Cancer, both the disease and the astronomical constellation, derive from the Latin cancer or cancrum, meaning crab. The astrological sign, of course, is said to resemble a crab and the disease was so named by the ancient Greek physician Galen (129-200 A.D.) who noted the similarity between a certain type of tumor with a crab as well—the swollen veins around the tumor resembling the legs of a crab.

Old English adopted cancer directly from Latin and used it for a variety of spreading sores and ulcers. This early sense survives in the modern word canker. From c.1000 in a manuscript called Læce Boc (Leech Book), collected in Oswald Cockayne’s Leechdoms, Wortcunning, and Starcraft of Early England, Vol. II, 1865:

Gemeng wið þam dustum, clæm on ðone cancer.
(Mix with the dust, smear on the cancer.)

And from Wyclif’s 2 Timothy, 1382:

The word of hem crepith as a kankir

The word was being applied specifically to the disease we today call cancer by the beginning of the 17th century. From Philemon Holland’s translation of Pliny’s Historie of the World:

Cancer is a swelling or sore comming of melancholy bloud, about which the veins appeare of a blacke or swert colour, spread in manner of a Creifish clees.

The astronomical sense of cancer is from the Latin name for the constellation of the crab. The name was known to the Anglo-Saxons, but only as a Latin name and was not assimilated into English until the Middle English period. It appears in Ælfric’s De Temporibus Anni, written c.993, in a list of the constellations of the Zodiac:

Feorða • Cancer • þæt is Crabba
(Fourth, Cancer, that is the crab.)

The Anglicized name appears c.1391 in Chaucer’s Treatise on the Astrolabe:

In this heved of cancer is the grettist declinacioun northward of the sonne...this signe of cancre is clepid the tropik of Somer.
(At this first point (head) of cancer is the greatest declination northward of the sun…this sign of cancer is named the tropic of summer.)

What causes stomach ulcers and how do you get rid of them naturally?

I think I have an ulcer in my stomach, I looked up the symptoms and they seem to match mine, I really do not like having to have to take anything perscibed by a doctor who isn't holistic. At the moment I don't have the money to spend on a doctor of any type. Is there anything I can do here at home that will help heal it? Also, what can cause stomach ulcers?
----------

Stomach ulcers can be serious. I highly suggest getting checked out by a doctor. I know money is a big issue for many people right now, but there are many things that can cause symptoms of an ulcer, and untreated ulcers can lead to more serious problems. If your symptoms persist, see someone.

There are many factors that can contribute to ulcers: Smoking, alcohol consumption, irregular diet, and use of NSAIDs (asprin, ibuprofen). There's thought that H.pylori (a bacteria) plays a role in ulcer development. A stomach ulcer is essentially acid creating sores in your stomach lining.

Things that you can do at home are to stop smoking if you do, and to avoid alcohol. Eating yogurt can also help. However, you really do need to get this checked out, and treated.

Antibiotics are commonly prescribed for H.pyloric stomach ulcers, and acid in the stomach should be reduced by another medication (usually a proton pump inhibitor or H2 blocker),

I'm not very familiar with non-pharmacological options to treat ulcers.

I don't know what symptoms you're having, your pain level, etc. You are the judge of when to get checked out, but if anything gets worse, be sure to go in!  (+ info)

What is the proper way to do stomach crunches?

I went to a gym a few years ago and I cannot remember if the woman told me to suck in my stomach when I do them or if she told me not to....She said that you will get muscles in your stomach that bulge out and your stomach will not get flat if they are done improperly...Can someone please inform me of the proper way to do them for a flatter stomach? Do you suck your stomach in or no? Thank you!
----------

you can suck in our tummy but make sure that you are breathing while you do the crunches. put you r hands behing your head and dont bend your arms try and make your elbows level with the ground if that makes any sense, and then look up and the ceiling and lift your torso up towards the ceiling. make sure that your shoulder bones come off the ground. think of lifting up not folding in half. hope that helps  (+ info)

Or in other words, is it possible to loose stomach fat just by doing muscle exercises and healthy diet, or is lots of walking, cycling (medium to high cardio) also necessary?
----------

the truth of the matter is that you need to do cardiovascular exercises and abdominal exercises. the cardio exercises(cycling running swimming) will burn off any fat and the abdominal exercises will build the muscle. also you need to eat healthily. visit http://www.ab-core-and-stomach-exercises.com/abdominal-exercises.html and that hould get you started  (+ info)

How can i get rid of my stomach fat really fast?

I am so overweight but my stomach is the biggest part. My pants won't buttom because of my stomach and when i get a pair to fit over my stomach, then they won't stay on my behind? I need to know how to get rid of all this stomach fat really fast cuz it's gettin me really depressed.
----------

You can't choose what part of your body you loose weight from though, you can tone that part. I recommend eating a little less and working out more, you sure you aren't getting bloated? To loose one pound you need to burn 3500 calories. Try eating lots of fruits and veggies and less meat, carbs. and junk food in general. Start running or working out and getting a little more exercise in, even if it is parking at the back of the parking lot at stores. Lastly, get a larger pair of pants. You need to feel good about yourself to loose weight and be accepting of your body, don't let those pants that shrunk in the wash get your down! You can do it!  (+ info)

How does one differentiate between stomach pain from taking Plan B and stomach pain from an ectopic pregnancy?

Stomach pain is a typical side effect of taking Plan B but there is also a small risk for an ectopic pregnancy, which has a symptom of stomach pain. How does one tell the difference? What other symptoms would indicate an ectopic pregnancy rather than just typical side effects of Plan B? Thanks.
----------

Plan B prevents pregnancy just days after the woman has sex. An ectopic pregnancy takes just as long to implant as a normal pregnancy, 7-10 days. An ectopic pregnancy has pain located mostly on one side and may move to the center of the abdomen. It's extremely tender and the woman may have nausea and dizzyness. Hope that helps.  (+ info)
