bovine thymus polypeptide fractions/bovine spleen extract in immune supplements?

I have been sick with an upper respiratory infection and a friend who is into holistic treatments suggested I start taking something called ThymuPlex Immune Booster by Enzymatic. Mostly, it contains lots of Vitamin A, C, E, zinc and selenium, but it also says it contains "bovine thymus polypeptide fractions/glandular complex, bovine spleen extract, and bovine lymphatic extract." What's up with the bovine stuff? How would this stuff help me? Or am I wasting my money taking this?
----------

I'm familiar with the product....

Let me ask you this....
Would you ever need immunity against something like Cattle Pox, bovine pleuropneumonia, mastocytoma (got udders?) or cattle plague?
I thought not...

Now ask yourself why you would something that would boost the immune system of a cow. {Yeah, I'm being sarcastic....No, you don't want to bother getting such a thing.}

If I were going to get something holistic for an uupper respiratory infection, I would try to find the following herbs if possible - Osha, Red Root, or Mullien. Those help your immune system to a) fight pathogens and b) carry away debris (fluids, mucous, dead pathogens, etc) so that your body can heal better.

I would also try a couple weeks worth of cold liver oil for the vitamin A and D (which are great for the immune system) and the EPA for the effects on the inflammatory cytokines (it reduces inflammation and helps the lining of the lungs heal) along with plenty of easy to digest dark leafy greens and bright fruits (Think spinach salad with mandarin oranges) and plenty of diluted juices (especially citrus) and hot fluids.

Also, try some hot baths - much like inducing a fever, and getting plenty of sleep (more than you think) because it effects your neuroendocrine system (your hormones) to help you fight this and heal better as well...  (+ info)

Can I fight the symptoms of Congenital Adrenal Hyperplasia?

I am 13 years old and i've been researching my condition called congenital adrenal hyperplasia. The websites ive been visiting say that a symptom of this condition is that I will be tall as a child but short as an adult but I am not tall as a child and I'm wondering if it is possible to not be short as an adult.
----------

There are endocrinologists that specialize in this treatment - or rather the treatment of growth disorders.

I have no adrenals anymore so I live with the consequences daily as well. You really need to understand the medications (corticosteroids) and how to take them, how too much can effect you and too little can be deadly. You may also need to take salt tablets (I do!) and another medication called fludrocortisone that will help you maintain your potassium and sodium. All this will help you feel better. In addition, all your hormones should be monitored so you can be the best you can be.

what is the difference between thymus and thymic dysplasia?

The thymus is a gland and thymic dysplasia is a change in the growth pattern of that gland.  (+ info)

What are the effects of surgical removal of spleen, lymphnode and thymus from new born?

Wow! I hope this is only a theoritical question... if not, I feel for the parents having to deal with such issues at a time that should be their happiest.

The spleen is an organ above ther stomach and under the ribs on the left side. It is about the size of the fist. The spleen is part of the lymphatic system, which fights infection and keeps the body fluids in balance. It contains white blood cells that fight germs. The spleen also helps control the amount of blood in the body, and destroys old and damaged cells.
One can live without a spleen. Other organs, such as the liver, will take over some of the spleen's work. Without a spleen, however, the body will lose some of its ability to fight infections.

Removal of one, or even a few lymph nodes likely has no significant effect on the body... there are many lymph nodes throughout the body.

The thymus gland is lying beneath the breastbone and above the treachea (windpipe) and heart. It is a two-lobed gland; each lobe is made up of lymphatic tissue. The thymus gland plays a significant part in the establishment of the immune system from the 12th week of gestation until puberty, after which it begins to shrink gradually
Removal of the thymus in a newborn will result in a greatly impared immune system.

Best of luck!  (+ info)

Has anyone here every had hyperplasia of the breast?

I had surgery for calcifactions that were cancerous. I got the pathology report back today. A nurse called me and said some of the tissue they took came back with hyperplasia. Has anyone had that or know about what they do for it?
----------

Your question is confusing. Surgery for calcifications that were cancerous???
What was cancerous? The only way to tell whether it is cancerous or not is from tissue biopsy.
You said the Path report said it was hyperplasia. Hyperplasia is benign. Usual hyperplasia does not cause significant increased risk of developing cancer by itself without other factors such as family history, etc.
However, atypical hyperplasia does increase the risk of developing cancer. You need to talk to your surgeon who can tell you what to do from here on. Usually more follow up.
Best of luck.  (+ info)

How common is Complex Endometrial Hyperplasia? I was diagnosed with this recently by my OB-GYN.?

I am being treated with a medicine called Provera, which is actually Progesterone. The purpose is to keep the uterine lining from over-growing. I had to have a D&C to remove 2 polyps and a lot of the uterine lining. Thank you for any input or for sharing your experiences with this.
----------

not common but not rare either. more common in obese, diabetics, women who dont have monthly periods - but can happen to others. usually treated with provera for woman who wants to have children, otherwise sometimes a hysterectomy as it does have a risk of becoming uterine cancer  (+ info)

Has anyone successfully treated sebaceous hyperplasia?

Or know of a doctor who has?
----------

A hyfrefractor is often used for this disorder. It emits electrical charges into the affected areas. It's painful and can cause redness, but it usually helps.  (+ info)

How does antihistamines make benign prostatic hyperplasia worse?

If you have BPH, try NOT to take medications such as antihistamines, diuretics, decongestants, antispasmodics, tranquilizers and certain types of antidepressants. These can weaken the bladder muscle or narrow the opening of the prostate and worsen the BPH symptoms.  (+ info)
