What is the likleyhood that my wisdom tooth will be impacted?

By the time I was 16 I had both my 1st and 2nd molars removed leaving me with no teeth on my bottom right side. Now that I'm almost 19, my wisdom tooth is starting to come in on that side. I'm afraid, though, that it will be impacted with no teeth in front of it to push it upright. Is there a big chance that it will be impacted? Should I possibly check about a spacer or a partial?
----------

If the 3rd molar is visible...it is not impacted. The definition of impacted is that it is covered in bone. If it is only partially erupted then it may be considered partially impacted, but that's sort of splitting hairs.

3rd molars are pretty useless 90% of the time. I would recommend pulling the 3rd and getting implants to replace lost molars. If you don't have the $$$$ for that right now, just get a partial made so you can chew and keep other teeth from tipping and especially from upper molars from super erupting downward (very bad your your bite).

The partial will give you okay function and will keep the rest of your teeth from going to s&%#! until you can afford implants.

remember you are young (19) and if you have lost that many teeth by this age you need to start taking your teeth seriously or you will be in dentures by the time you are 30.  (+ info)

What is considered an impacted tooth and BCBS will cover the surgery?

What is considered an impacted tooth and BCBS will cover the surgery? I have my real tooth that never came out, it's just sitting on my gum, I have anther tooth that had no room to grow so it decided to come out thru my top mouth pallate. WIll regular health insurance cover this surgery (BCBS)
----------

Most medical insurance (such as BCBS) will only cover accidental damage to teeth. It can't hurt to call & ask though.  (+ info)

What are the symptoms when an impacted wisdom tooth becomes problematic?

what is level of pain?
does a swelling occur around the tooth, and how severe?

Actually I have a horizontally impacted wisdom tooth and now it has started to ache only slightly. So I want to know how much problem(pain or swelling) it should cause before I should go for its surgical removal process?
----------

Swelling, pain, foul breath, enlarged lymph node, feeling of difficulty opening and closing your jaw.

If it is abscessed, likely you will be treated with antibiotics and pain meds first before extraction.  (+ info)

Wisdom teeth removal and impacted canine tooth operation! How much does it hurt?

I am a 16-year-old girl and I am getting all 4 wisdom teeth removed and an impacted upper canine tooth exposure in the same operation tomorrow under general anesthetic. I'm also getting 5 baby teeth pulled that never came out by themselves. I'm just wondering how much this will hurt, how swollen my face will get, how many days of school I'll probably have to miss, and basically what the operation will be like. My oral surgeon never went into detail with me at the consultation.
----------

I would definitely ask your oral surgeon about any questions you may have. It is your job to find out what will be happening to your body.

From personal and friend experience:
I had only three wisdom teeth removed and I was given nitrous oxide (laughing gas) and I was awake listening to my iPod. I could feel a bit of pressure and slight irritation.
My friend when under (general anesthetic) and she was so glad she did because you do not feel anything or remember anything. Its 5, 4, 3, gone.

Because so much is going to happen in your mouth, you will most likely be out of school for at least a week. I did mine over a 4 day weekend (Fri-Mon) and went to school on Tuesday with a bit of puffiness.

You will be extremely puffy on the sides of your face near your mouth, and I mean extremely puffy for the first few days. I had to hold my face walking around my house because it was too heavy at first. (I do not want to scare you but it is true with me and it was with my friend; she wrapped her face up like she had the mumps). And, because of all the bleeding, your cheeks will turn yellowish but it will fade along with the puffiness.

I have never had a "impacted upper canine tooth exposure" so I can't tell you what it's like. I don’t even know exactly what it is. But, I’m sure it wall add some puffiness in the area and add to the pain factor.

As for the after pain: just take your medication when it tells you to. (I had Oxycodone, the generic of Percocet).
The first night is the worst; I’m not going to lie. I was almost crying once the local anesthetic wore off. You then will want all the medication you can get. But, omg, once the pills take affect its like heaven (there is still a slight pain, like a small headache pain but you get use to it). Because you’re so sore to eat anything solid you need to eat a lot of soft and mussy stuff to take the pills. What ever you get (because of everything you’re getting I won’t be surprised if you get Vicodin) it will be strong on an empty stomach, so eat lots of food to take the pills. I hope you love yogurt, apple sauce, and pudding.
Things to do to help with the pain: Use frozen ice packs on your face for 20 minutes on then take them off for 10 minutes. Repeat until your can’t take the cold anymore. But keep it up for the first 48 hours after surgery. It does helps with the pain and helps with the puffiness.

P.S. You will get use to the salt-water rinse. If you can’t take it all at first, start out with a small amount of salt, like a pinch, and build up every rinse until you reach a ½ teaspoon in 8oz of warm water.

Hope this helps. PM me if you have any more questions.

What does Boney impacted tooth mean? I would like to see a picture. Any links with pics would work.?

I am getting my top left wisdom tooth pulled and im so confused about my insurance. They say health insurance covers oral surgery if the tooth is boney and impacted. I dont know what that means! I want my dental insurance to cover it it would be so much cheaper. I have the one wisdom tooth and its there but its broken and black. Obviously its a cavity. Would that be boney and impacted or not. I hope its not. Thanks for your help!
----------

The term "bony" impaction indicates that the wisdom tooth is still fully encased in the jaw's bone.

How important is it to extract an impacted wisdom tooth?

I'm having a huge amount of pain from my impacted wisdom tooth. I think it's actually pushing my jawbone. My dental insurance doesn't start until June (3 weeks) so I'm putting off going to the dentist until then. Will there be complications if I wait that long?
----------

No there will be no dire results if you wait that long other than being in pain. You might want to call the dental office and explain the delay reasoning and the pain you are in. They may start you on a course of pain pills and/or antibiotics. Good luck  (+ info)

What is the best action to be taken for an impacted canine tooth?

I have an impacted canine above my tooth number 12 because there is no space for it to come down. What is the best procedure for this?
----------

I am in the same position as you...my suggestion is that you get it checked out by your dentist. Mine is a full on adult tooth. I figured they will most likely pull it or if it's a pernament tooth, it will most likly get some braces or something. My guess is it will most likely get pulled. I wish a lot of luck. I don't find out my future until Augest...  (+ info)

How long will it take (generally) for an impacted tooth to be pulled up?

I have an impacted tooth (on the bottom) and I just had a few surgeries to finally attach a wire to it to begin pulling it up. It's 2 teeth back from my canine tooth and hasn't come up after having a space there for a few years. How long does it generally take for a tooth to come up? Of course, that is, if it is not fused to the jaw bone, which it might be :/
----------

I had one too - it never came up correctly. The space did finally fill up after the tooth next to it had to be removed. Even that took 5 years.  (+ info)

Can you have a completely impacted wisdom tooth removed under IV sedation?

I have one completely impacted wisdom tooth (as in fully covered by the gum), one that is partially impacted (partially covered by the gum) and two that have come through, but don't really have enough room. Can I have these removed using IV sedation in the oral surgeon's chair, or does the completely impacted tooth mean that I will need to go to hospital and have a general anaesthetic?
----------

I had 4 wisdom teeth(3 were impacted)) removed while under IV sedation at the oral surgeon office.  (+ info)

How much do you think an impacted wisdom tooth would cost to get extracted? I have no insurance?

Its growing upright, but it looks as if its going into my cheek...hard to explain. Basically the top of the tooth is visible. Thanks for the answers!
