I got my wisdom teeth out 11 days ago, complications?

now I have trismus after my wisdom teeth extraction I am taking a muscle relaxer but I can only open my mouth (space between teeth) about 1/4 an inch

I can't eat solid food because I can't get it in my mouth

I wouldn't have a problem chewing but I can't get anything in there

How long is recovery time? I am sure it is depends but is there a guesstimate?
I have seen my oral surgen twice since surgery, he said to just wait.

Hmm, 11 days seems a little excessive. Have you tried to call your dentist?

Did he mention anything, such as your roots coming off, being left in the gingiva?

What medication are you on?

I suggest calling tomorrow morning.   (+ info)

need a doc, I have a lengthy ? have to do a case history report but cant figure out the disease.(diabetes)?

This sounds like tetanus. Pretty classic description especially with the spasms and the lower extremity wounds. Such a shame since its so easily preventable with vaccinations, but you have to remember the booster shots every 5-10 years.

Wisdom tooth extraction & stiff jaw, can't open my mouth?

I had one wisdom tooth extracted at the beginning of July (it was my lower right side) The pain was bad for a couple of days but when it got a little better, I also got Trismus...I was unable to open my mouth very wide. My jaw felt stiff, my throat also felt sore & I was basically on a liquid diet for a week! It was gone by the 2nd week & I was able to open my mouth again.

Now 3 weeks later, the stiffness came back, my throat hurts again & it's hard to open my mouth.

Anyone else experience this? Had Trismus, it went away & came back? Is this common?

Serious Answers only please...thanks!

Problem after wisdom tooth extraction?

After getting the stitches removed a couple of days later i started having a weird problem while going to sleep. My mouth keeps suddenly opening up and i feel a shock like sensation at the place where the tooth was removed from. Its already been over 18 days since the surgery and the place which has been stitched up still hurts quite a bit. Also my mouth opens up about 2 fingers only. The dentist said it was Trismus. My tongue still has a bit of numbness. I went to an oral surgeon and she said its most likely to be nerve damage and should heal with time. She gave me a multivitamin tablet to get rid of the numbness in my tongue. Could the pain in the area operated be because the dentist didnt stitch it up well? I also went to see a neurologist and he gave a medicine which would stop the opening of my mouth when going to sleep. But that medicine increased the problem and it was difficult to keep my mouth shut even while awake. I havent slept well for the past 4-5 days. What should i do?
I went to a surgeon. He figured out the problem. The joint in one the sides of the jaws has become loose. It will take about 2 months to heal.

You are experiencing a form of TMJ dysfunction NOT related to stitches. Most likely you are suffering because of the degree your mouth was opened beyond your normal comfort range during surgery. This has caused your masseter muscle and TMJ to spasm. There is also nerve damage that might have occurred when a deeply impacted wisdom tooth was removed. No one can tell you if and when the nerve damage will be repaired. It is one of the risks that your oral surgeon should have discussed with you prior to surgery.

I am opposed to medications for your problem. They could be of precious little value. Instead, I would try placing hot packs on the TMJ to try to relax the muscles and enhance blood circulation to the area.

Avoid opening your mouth beyond that which is comfortable. Do not force it.

Avoid chewing hard foods, sticky foods or taking large bites.

You can try chewing on a SMALL piece of SOFT chewing gum using a gentle chewing action, barely opening your mouth. This can stimulate a normal response in the TMJ and gradually allow it to function normally. If this exercise worsens the problem, stop.

You can consider ibuprofen to reduce inflammation. This will result in expediting the return of normal TMJ function.  (+ info)

I have an infected impacted erupted wisdom tooth, should I double my antibiotics for two infected teeth?

For a few months I've been experiencing the infamous and unescapable growth of my third molars, aka your wisdom teeth. Last saturday night, I ate some spicy pepperoni pizza, and by midnight my jaw line was swollen and I couldn't close my mouth. My gums were very sensitive and the skin 'flap' over my erupted wisdom tooth was very inflamed.

I took a couple Aleve and some tylenol, washed my mouth with mouth wash and set about trying to get to sleep for work in the morning. By 5 am I was experiencing full Trismus and extreme sensitivity in my jaw, neck, and temple.

I went to emergency, and after sitting in a waiting room for what seemed an eternity, I was brought a prescription for penicillin and kicked out of the hospital. There are no dentists there, and apparently I should have known that.

I don't have dental insurance, and I don't have money for an extraction. But I found a dentist who is going to call me in next time a patient cancels a wisdom tooth extraction -- at the charge of the original patient.

I was told I needed to take the penicillin for 72 hours minimum before I could have dental surgery. And continue to take it until I have the problem tooth(s?) extracted. Now it's thursday and I'm in the beginning stages of the same infection on the opposite side, it's quite painful and obvious -- Even through the pain killers I'm on for the original infection.

So my question is, with two infections now.. should I double my dose of penicillin? I have 10 days worth, with another refill for 10 days. that would get me about another 8 days of antibiotics.

Sorry for the long story, and thank you in advance.
