Urinary retention?

For the past five weeks I've been having urinary retention on and off. I've had two doctors tell me I'm constipated, which can cause urinary retention. Yesterday I went to the gynecologist and she gave me a rectal exam while pressing down around my uterus and ovaries and stuff. Before I went to the exam I was feeling okay, and since the exam the urinary retention has come back. I also noticed that the retention went away for a couple days after my last period.
Is it possible for urinary retention to be caused by the uterus moving around or changing positions or something like that?
I've had a CT scan and an x-ray and neither one showed anything abnormal. I also went to a urologist and he just did an ultrasound and urine analysis and said he couldn’t find anything wrong. I've had a blood test, three urine analyses, a urine culture (I don't know if that's different from the analysis) and multiple ultrasounds/bladder scans and everything came back normal. I also had a rectal exam a few weeks ago and the doctor couldn't feel any stool, and then had another one yesterday by my gyno who said she could feel some small, hard stools. I can still go to the bathroom, though, and the gyno didn't say I had an impaction. Would a CT scan be able to tell whether or not I have a prolapsed uterus?
----------

did they mention a prolapsed uterus? That can cause it. Have your seen a urologist? You need to if you haven't. That could be more serious then they think. Also if you are constipated then you need to try and get everything out. You might be impacted which is serious.  (+ info)

Can urinary retention be treated without a catheter?

I have urinary retention, I haven't told anyone yet, but lately it's been getting worse. I don't want to have to use a catheter, is there any other treatments for this available?
----------

They may be able to give you some medicine to help with that, but I would recommend consulting with a bladder specialist as well to see what they say.  (+ info)

Can you tell me the difference between post urinary retention and distended bladder?

What are the treatments for these?
----------

A distended bladder is just a bladder that is larger than normal, usually due to holding a lot of urine. The distention can go away if you urinate unless there is an organic cause.

Post urinary retention means that after you urinate, urine is left in your bladder or kidneys. It is a significant enough amount that it can be seen on a scan or with a test. This can cause recurrent urinary tract infections which can lead to a buildup of scar tissue, the loss of the "full" feeling in the bladder, and even incontinence.

A distended bladder doesn't really require treatment unless there is loss of muscle tone due to it being distended for a long period of time. It helps to empty your bladder on a regular basis, about every 2 hours if possible, to keep it from getting too full and possibly weakening the muscle.
As for post urinary retention, there are a few treatments available. One is to do a straight cath after voiding to make sure the bladder is empty. Another, most often used in conjunction with the straight cath or by itself, is medication to get rid of the infection if one is there. Other meds are available to help with the condition. Surgical intervention may be indicated. Bladder retraining can be helpful.  (+ info)

How long would it take for urine to travel up into your kidneys if you have urinary retention?

Depends on how big is your bladder / the volume capacity and your water intake. Treatment usually would need catheter.  (+ info)

Has anyone had problems with urinary retention syndrome due to painkillers? If so, what do you do about it?

I feel like my bladder is going to explode! Last time I had to go to the hospital to have a catheter put in and I really don't want to go that route again. Thanks for your input and suggestions.
----------

You mean opiate painkillers? Well that is a side effect; obviously your pain is agonizing if you needed a catheter. You can't urinate; a ruptured bladder will either kill you or make life hell. Without the painkillers, the pain could kill you by causing a heart attack. The catheter doesn't look like such a bad solution. Hang in there, I know life can suck.  (+ info)

I need advice for retroverted uterus and urinary retention.?

I am 9 weeks pregnant with triplets and have been told my uterus is tilted back or retroverted. I just started having issues with urinary retention. I feel like I have to urinate but nothing happens. My doctor told me that the uterus should correct its position on its own and to drink more water in the meantime. I understand the OB doctor can manually change the position of the uterus and sometimes a urinary catheter is necessary. In surfing the web there are stories of incarceration of uterus with second trimester miscarriage and maternal death! Does anyone have any advise on the matter?
----------

First thing if you were drinking enough water you would never have an empty bladder. 2nd is if you have a tilted uterus it can cause some hip and back pain for your first 20 weeks after that every woman's uterus moves forward, so for the next 20 weeks it is not tilted! Your Dr can also give you some exercises to do to help move your uterus forward before 20 weeks. Also that frequent urination sensation should subside once you are in your 2nd trimester.  (+ info)

can balance loss urinary retention and body weakness be cured?

am diagnosed with vit. b12 def. and very worried, can anybody tell me what to do how to get well soon
----------

If that is all that is wrong with you, it will correct when your body has enough Vitamin B-12 to work properly.

However, I would be very vigilant in watching my health. These symptoms should vanish quickly with treatment. If they don't you need to see a neurologist for a different type of testing.

Good Luck and I hope you feel better soon.  (+ info)
