My 11 yr old son was diag. with Viremia. Can you give me some info on Viremia?

Viremia: The presence of a virus in the blood. Viremia is analogous to bacteremia (the presence of bacteria in the blood) and parasitemia (the presence of a parasite in the blood). Viremia, bacteremia and parasitemia are all forms of sepsis (bloodstream infection).

That's just a vague statement that you son has a virus in his blood. I hope they told you more? I know it happens, but I hate it when doctors leave the family with vague statements. That's about as helpful as the doctor saying "umm he's sick" . I would call them back up and say, ok, and from what??  (+ info)

fever of viremia?

i have fever for 1 month ,precedded by sorethroat for 2 days ,
----------

ok let me get this straight. You had a fever for 1 month? thats probably close to impossible, because a fever for one month kill ya. But remember viremia is just a virus able to reproduce in ur blood, its not necissarily a disease. So if u had a fever for 1 month...u probably have a really strange disease.  (+ info)

Is it the sign of HIV infection?

Please help me...I'm shocking!
I had one time unprotected sex with a girl who i don't know her sex history last 3 months back. Then, i was i bit worry and i took HIV test last 1.5 months ago and the result was negative.
But now it's 3months finished and i found a few red spots on my skin that i didn't realize before. The red spots are just a few amounts that's 3 to 5 on hands and arms.
I'd like to know if these are signs of viremia (initial infection).
----------

I don't think so. Usually at the time of infection, you become very sick - horrible nausea, and fever. Then these symptoms disappear and it's like nothing ever happened. The only way to find out for sure is to keep getting checked - at least every 6 mos.  (+ info)

is this good hiv test?

Identifying Acute HIV Infections
For more than two decades HIV diagnostic testing primarily has
relied on the detection of HIV specific antibodies that are produced
as part of the host immune response to the infection.
However, using existing HIV screening tests, detectable levels
of HIV specific antibodies cannot be demonstrated in blood for
at least one to two weeks after HIV genetic material (RNA) can
be detected in the blood by nucleic acid amplification testing
(NAAT).2,10 Therefore HIV-1 NAAT has become the method of
choice to identify acute HIV-1 infections. The early stage of an
acute HIV infection is known as the "window phase.” The window
phase is characterized by high levels of HIV in the blood
(viremia) that can be detected by HIV-1 NAAT prior to the production
of HIV specific antibodies (seroconversion) by the
acutely infected individual. The duration of the window phase is
determined by the relative sensitivity of HIV antibody screening
(Enzyme Immuno-Assay: EIA or rapid point-of-care tests).
Newer, third-generation EIA’s based on recombinant or synthetic
peptide antigens generally can detect HIV specific antibodies
days or weeks earlier than EIA’s based on whole viral
lysate antigens that were originally developed in the 1980’s or
early 1990’s.9 Additionally, newer, third-generation EIA’s are
more sensitive than the traditional HIV-1 western blot confirmatory
assay and most of the rapid point-of-care screening tests.
Many third-generation EIA reactive specimens from acutely
HIV-1 infected individuals can be initially non-reactive in rapid
screening tests or, if reactive in newer generation screening
immunoassays, cannot be confirmed as HIV-1 antibody-positive
by less sensitive traditional western blot (WB) testing. This
effectively prolongs the time of the window phase until HIV-1
seroconversion can be confirmed.

That sounds like a medical paper. So what's the question.  (+ info)

is it usual for a hospital to tell you you have contracted a virus but not say which virus?

I have had muscle pains and fever for like 2 weeks and when i went to the hospital about it they simply diagnosed me as having viremia and i understand that to be a blood viral infection. however, i know that there are many different kinds of viruses and they didn't specify what kind of virus. Do they need to test further to find out what kind of virus it is?

If it is something serious would they have been able to tell me?

You didn't say if they gave you any medication. There are anti-viral meds that can be given. Some one said there is no test for the flu. WRONG! In the ER & ICU I have tested pt's for the flu. They also can test for viruses. Just like bacteria, viruses are treated with the anti-viral that works best on that virus  (+ info)
