what can you tell me about exercise-induced vocal cord dysfunction?

my doctor thinks i may have exercise induced asthma, but my symptoms don't seem like asthma and i've found out a little about vocal cord dysfunction. does anyone have any good information about it or has it?
also, when i use my inhaler, it doesn't help at all or very, very little.
----------

exercise induced astham is one entity and vocal cord dysfuntion is another. they can theoratically co-exist but never heard of it. Best person to diagnose VCD would be an ENT or a pulmonologist. Lack of response to the inhaler is a possible marker pointing away from Asthma but it may also suggest severer form of asthma requiring a nebuliser.

suggestions would be to either go back again and again to the same doctor so that he/she can proceed up in the treatment protocol or consider a second opinion,

Has anyone out there had success with speech therapy for a vocal cord cyst?

My 16 year old daughter has a vocal cord cyst. Her voice is very raspy at times and she gets voice fatigue. Has anyone out there had an improved vocal quality from speech therapy alone? I'm having difficulty getting any assurances from the speech therapists about whether they can help her or not.
----------

A cyst, no. Nodules, yes.
See an ENT for a proper diagnosis and, if it's appropriate, a referral for voice therapy with a speech pathologist. Any ENT will know who to refer his/her patients to. All speech pathologists are not created equal.  (+ info)

What are the risks associated with removing a pulyp on the vocal cord (in the throat) using Laser Surgery?

I have a pulyp on my left vocal cord and it really affects my speech. I was told they sugery can leave permanent scaring that results in voice hoarsness for life. Someone told me however that the laser surgery worked for her for something in her throat. I think it was something to do with her voice. I'd like to know what the risks are with laser surgery as opposed to conventional surgery.
----------

Applications of CO2 laser and cautery are often damaging to the delicate vocal fold cover. Risks of endoscopic laryngeal surgery with laser polypectomy include airway fire, thermal injury, and potentially infectious laser plume.  (+ info)

How are people able to survive a serious spinal cord injury (paralysis)?

People who survive spinal cord injury and are paralyzed neck down. How do they survive? Internal organs are still working but it wouldnt be long before they die of suffocation. How do they keep them from suffocating. If you dont die of suffocation what would you die of next?
----------

It depends where the injury is located. Breathing is contolled by the brain stem so as long as the injury occurred below that the person will not suffocate. However, the human body is not designed to survive immobile, and extensive medical care is needed for a person to live with serious paralysis.  (+ info)

what does it feel like to strain a vocal cord?

i was at a basketball game last night and i was screaming my lungs out and now my throat hurts today like i have strep throat. but i can't have strep, because i had my tonsils removed a couple of summers ago.

is it possible i strained a vocal cord?
----------

It just means you screamed a lot. I remember i used to scream with my friends in elementary school, when we were little and immature, and i remember i'd come home and my throat would hurt and i'd kind of lose my voice, and i think i'd even still have it the next day as well. I dont remember if i'd have it any longer. Anyways, you'll be fine.  (+ info)

How far away is a cure for paralysis caused by a spinal cord injury?

Even before I was hurt I would hear they are 5 to 10 years away and it seems like that is always the answer and it doesn't change. And will there be a decreases chance for returns depending on how long post injury you are?
----------

A cure is always hard to predict, but there are always major improvements. When you consider Christopher Reeve - for the average person they would not have been able to survive as long as he had with the amount of damage he had. Oddly enough my brother was in a motorcycle accident months before Reeve's accident. My brother suffered brain/spinal injury. He's still doing his therapy to try to keep the muscle as toned and working as possible. And despite the final ability of walking, better to be as prepared as possible than not. The Dr said even if a cure was found his walk would never be "normal" but even if small steps were possible it's a lot better than the difficulty he has of moving from the wheelchair to anything else. We pray for a cure every day ... and we'll pray for you as well. Sorry if this got too long but I do understand your issues and desires.  (+ info)

What is the best remedy for vocal cord irritation?

I had a trache tube inserted into my trachea during surgury about 4 weeks ago.
Now I can only speak on a low pitch. I cannot project my voice, and I'm a singer.
Is there some type of therapy for this problem?
----------

Rest your voice as much as possible. You can do a gargle but that will only help your throat not your trachea....Since it has been four weeks I would call my doctor. It should have cleared up a long time ago......Maybe there is some inflammation, or possible infection........that needs to be treated......  (+ info)
