What is the difference between Vocal cord inflammations and sore throat?

Inflammation of the voice box is commonly called Laryngitis which effects our ability to speak. A sore throat is usually a general inflammation of the throat exclusive of the Larynx.

Laryngitis is an inflammation of your voice box (larynx) due to overuse, irritation or infection. The larynx is a framework of cartilage, muscles and mucous membranes that forms the entrance of your windpipe (trachea). Inside the larynx are your vocal cords — two folds of mucous membrane covering muscle and cartilage.

Normally your vocal cords open and close smoothly, forming sounds through their movement and vibration. But in laryngitis, your vocal cords become inflamed or irritated. They swell, causing distortion of the sounds produced by air passing over them. As a result, your voice sounds hoarse. In some cases of laryngitis, your voice can become so faint as to be undetectable.

Laryngitis may be short-lived (acute) or long-lasting (chronic). Although acute laryngitis usually is nothing more than an irritation and inflammation from a virus, persistent hoarseness can signal a more serious problem.  (+ info)

Can someone explain David Archuleta's vocal paralysis to me?

I know there was an article out there, but did it help make his voice mature for his age or is it something else? It's the right kind of growth spurt.
----------

The larynx, or voice box, includes two relatively identical tissues called vocal folds (or vocal cords) that normally are open in a "V" shape when you're breathing (the point of the V being just behind your Adam's apple). Both vocal folds move to the midline and touch each other when you speak or cough. That way, when the air comes up from the lungs, the air pressures will make the vocal folds vibrate together, just like when you split a blade of grass and blow through it in the summertime. There are two nerves, one on each side, that allow the vocal folds to move back and forth. These are called the recurrent laryngeal nerves. Because the left nerve is much longer than the right one, it makes it more vulnerable to injury. Injury to the recurrent laryngeal nerves can occur because of a virus, surgery complications, pressing from a mass (such as a tumor), or for unknown (idiopathic) reasons. That means that one vocal fold moves to the middle, but the other one either doesn't move at all or doesn't move far enough to make contact with the healthy vocal fold. That results in a breathy vocal sound, difficulty making your voice loud, difficulty making a sharp cough, and sometimes choking on water or food during swallowing. Sometimes the nerve will regain normal function after about a year, and sometimes the patient will need some sort of intervention from a specialized ear-nose-throat doctor to re-position the paralyzed vocal fold so that the normal fold can reach it. In the case of a vocal fold that is paralyzed in a position that is relatively close to midline, special voice exercises can be learned from a specialized speech-language pathologist to help compensate for the patient's symptoms.

Vocal fold paralysis is not normal for any age, and is not part of normal vocal maturation. Sometimes it can be a sign of a more ominous problem. If you notice similar voice symptoms in your voice (or in the voices of your family or friends), be sure to see your doctor and get it checked out.

I think it's great that David Archuleta is doing so well. He is a great example of how you don't need to have perfect vocal folds in order to be able to sing (depending on what kind of music you're wanting to perform). Good luck to him!

How can an injured vocal cord be cured?

I'm so afraid I might have lost my ability to sing forever... I don't seem to recover and my voice doesn't sound any better. It doesn't feel that bad, like to go to the doctor... no fever or anything... I just can't sing or talk for a long time because I will lose my voice and I love to sing. Please, let me know if there is something I can do.

Is anyone familiar with Vocal Cord Dysfunction Syndrome or VCDS?

My allergist today has told me that after 10+ years of being treated for severe asthma that I do NOT have asthma/allergies, but that he thinks that I have VCDS. Is anone familiar with this? Any help would be nice!
----------

Vocal cord dysfunction syndrome occurs when the vocal cords inappropriately close or narrow during breathing. This most commonly happens when trying to breathe in and causes the frightening sensation of the airway closing off and not being able to get enough air.

Is a sore on the Vocal Cord 2 weeks long considered strep throat?

It feels like I have something stuck in there. Ands i looked and there's a dark red sore on there. My mucus is semi-green/yellow which means I have a sort of an infection. I do feel tired at times, and have mild headaches.
Hey, I should add that i just quit smoking 2-3 weeks ago. I had smoked for 13 years and it started to get bad to about 1 1/2 packs a day. I did this without any type of medication or therapy.
----------

Yes! Off to the Doc or Naturopath with you to get sorted out.
Here are a few things you can do for yourself.

Natural Therapies

Herbs such as Echinacea and Andrographis are used to treat throat infections and work by improving the body's immune function

Zinc lozenges have been shown to reduce the number of days of a sore throat associated with the common cold

Herbs such as marshmallow, thyme and licorice have traditionally been used for relief of sore throats

Eliminate all sources of concentrated simple sugars (sugar, honey, fruit juice) from the diet and instead base your diet on complex carbohydrates such as fruit, vegetables and whole grains. Sugars feed the bacteria creating the infection.

Hope this helps.

superficial cancer removed early november. granuloma treated with cortisone and acid-reflux pills.
----------

In a way they are,it is to do with your bodies healing process, the area is healing to fast and granulating is forming over the area.
It is quite a common thing to happen,I have seen a lot when nursing burns patients,we treat with cortisone too.
I have tried to keep my explanation simple and easy to understand and I wish you well.  (+ info)
