VOCAL CORD DYSFUNCTION AND THE MILITARY?

One of my service connected disabilities that i was medically separated for is vocal cord dysfunction (VCD). I was only awarded 10%. Has anyone out there had the same problem and what where you rated for VCD?
----------

Vocal cord dysfunction (diagnosed with an exercise test and a PFT.) is treatable. Some doctors refer to speech pathologist who specialize in voice and other refer to psychologist. It generally only occurs in athletes (serious) but I guess the military would afford the same stress and exercise level.

The left vocal cord of my b/f is not working. They did a C-scan and said the nerve may never come back. Any?

Just trying to find out if anyone has had this experience. His voice is very hoarse and he can hardly talk. Wondering if anyone has ever had this type of problem and it corrected it's self. We are in Thailand and he never had an actual injury to his throat and there has been no pain. HELP!

No matter what anyone says, nerves can and do heal themselves. It helps to eat a good diet, and olive oil and butter are two of the best things for healthy nerves.  (+ info)

anyone ever have surgery to remove a polyp from their vocal cord? how long did recovery take?

I'm a mezzo-soprano and I have to get surgery to remove a polyp. What is this surgery like and how could it affect my voice?! thanks for all answers in advance!!
----------

Oh I feel for you,you must be very worried if you're a singer. I'm an opera singer... I think that the surgery shouldn't be too traumatic, as long as you follow your post recovery plan to the letter. I'm not sure where you are (I'm in the UK), but I'd advise that you ask very specific questions to your ENT specialist. I've heard that different types of intubation (plastic, or rubber) can have a massive impact on how quickly you recover (one type can adhere to the cords, and cause more damage, which is very important as a singer.

I think the surgery is only a very short procedure, and not very painful, but this website seems to be very helpful:

The best of luck to you, I hope you feel better soon!  (+ info)

Anyone out there have vocal cord dysfunction?

I have been having shortness of breath and panic attacks, and have found out this is what is causing these things to happen.
----------

I don't have it and actually had never heard of it.

However, I have provided a link for you to view that includes a large amount of information about vcd, including treatment.  (+ info)

Vocal cord cyst removal, septoplasty, and adenoidectomy?

Has anybody had these three surgeries at the same time? I am scheduled to have all of these done in a couple of months and I am just wondering what the recovery is like? I know that, because of the vocal cord part, I will be on voice rest for a while, but what else? Any pain or severe discomfort?

Thanks!

What type of vocal cord mass is seen in smoker?

Vocal chord masses in general are seen in smokers (as well as people who abuse their voice - i.e. teachers etc). These typically result in a hoarse voice and sore throat.

Either way, there is a possibility of oro/pharyngeal/laryngeal cancer and needs to be investigated.  (+ info)

Does anyone have vocal cord dysfunction?

Does anyone have it?
If, on the rare chance you do, does this sound like it?:

When I run, a few minutes after I start, my throat closes up, and it feels like there is something in my throat. I can hardly breathe and I hear some high-pitched sound when some air goes in. If I take my Albuterol inhaler, it doesn't help at all (my doctor said I probably have exercise-induced asthma, but my symptoms don't seem anything like it). If I try to drink water, it goes down very difficultly, but helps a little. It goes away a few minutes after I stop running.
----------

Sounds like VCD to me, I was diagnosed about 1 year ago and one of the tell tale symptoms of VCD is difficulty swallowing. I would make an appointment with an ENT, but be aware that they can only diagnose VCD when you are having symptoms. I was diagnosed with asthma about 5 years ago and had no relief from inhalers. When I got the VCD diagnosis I stopped using inhalers altogether and am feeling much better. My inhalers actually were worsening my VCD condition.

Good luck - it is an awful disease and very scary  (+ info)
