    gingival overgrowth is usually associated with systemic conditions or treatment (e.g. blood dyscrasias, anti-epileptic or immunosuppressive agents). A child is presented, who had enlarged gingiva associated with a generalized enamel defect (amelogenesis imperfecta (AI), hypoplastic type) and document the periodontal and restorative management of this case.

3/7. amelogenesis imperfecta: functional and esthetic restoration of a severely compromised dentition.

    The treatment of patients with severe forms of amelogenesis imperfecta presents an interesting challenge to the dental team. A 16-year-old girl presented with a severely compromised occlusion and poor esthetics that had lowered her self-esteem. Preoperative investigations included the determination of completion of growth, an accurate diagnostic waxup, and an evaluation of clinical crown lengths. Periodontal full-flap surgery was planned to lengthen clinical crowns and create gingival harmony. This was to be followed by placement of 28 complete crowns to restore occlusal function and gain a pleasing esthetic result. All-porcelain crowns were placed from premolar to premolar in each arch (20 crowns), and porcelain-fused-to-metal crowns were placed on each molar tooth in each arch (8 crowns). The final treatment result provided this patient with a mutually protective occlusion and with esthetics that greatly enhanced her self-image.

4/7. amelogenesis imperfecta and nephrocalcinosis: a new case of this rare syndrome.

    This article describes a new case of a rare syndrome including enamel agenesis of the primary and permanent dentition, delayed or absent eruption of the permanent dentition, coronal intra-alveolar resorption and gingival enlargement. Renal symptoms include medullary nephrocalcinosis without any apparent cause, and evolution to a renal failure. The early diagnosis provided by the oral symptoms leads to a better renal prognosis. As a consequence, pediatric dentists should be aware of this pathology.

5/7. Rough hypoplastic amelogenesis imperfecta with follicular hyperplasia.

    This report documents a unique case of rough hypoplastic amelogenesis imperfecta with apparent anterior oligodontia and multiple anomalies of the associated mesenchymally derived tissues. Multiple unerupted teeth showed hypercementosis, distorted roots with aberrant dentin formation, and marked follicular hyperplasia. The hyperplastic follicles had a complex histopathologic appearance that recapitulated some features of the WHO-type odontogenic fibroma. The features of these teeth, the nature of the associated follicular lesions, and their relationship to the unerupted teeth are discussed.

6/7. amelogenesis imperfecta and unusual gingival hyperplasia.

    BACKGROUND: amelogenesis imperfecta (AI) is a group of hereditary conditions that primarily involves the defective formation and/or calcification of enamel. The association of AI with gingival enlargement-like lesions has also been reported. methods: This paper reports a case of a hypoplastic AI associated with unusual generalized gingival hyperplasia. RESULTS: Histological aspect of the gingival growth was characterized by a dense connective tissue with a mild mononuclear inflammatory infiltrate, calcified bodies, and islands of odontogenic epithelium. CONCLUSION: The present case represents a very interesting demonstration of the fact that, although rare, AI may be associated with generalized gingival enlargement.

7/7. Autosomal recessive rough hypoplastic amelogenesis imperfecta. A case report with clinical, light microscopic, radiographic, and electron microscopic observations.

    A case is presented of a 12-year-old Japanese girl with nearly complete lack of enamel in the deciduous and the permanent dentitions, coupled with a gross abnormality in the pattern of eruption. There was no family history of a similar condition. Deciduous molars were extracted, and hyperplastic gingival tissue was resected. On the basis of clinical, radiographic, and microscopic findings, a diagnosis of autosomal recessive rough hypoplastic amelogenesis imperfecta was made. The configuration of the abnormal enamel was examined with scanning and transmission electron microscopy as well as with light microscopy. Prismatic structure was virtually absent, and the scant enamel showed globular protrusions superficially. Two different surface structures were identified as covering parts of the enamel. At the ultrastructural level, calcified bodies located in the gingival tissue appeared to be composed, in part, of a dense enamel-like substance and, in part, of a tissue with features of afibrillar cementum.
