1/4. rehabilitation of a quadruple amputee subsequent to electrical burns sustained whilst hang gliding.PURPOSE: The purpose of this article is to describe the management, difficulties encountered and level of independence achieved during the initial stage of a quadruple amputee's rehabilitation. METHOD: This is a case study of the rehabilitation of the first known person losing all four limbs due to electrocution whilst hang gliding. RESULTS: The patient became a successful upper limb prosthetic user and returned to work six hours a day. Full independence in activities of daily living was not achieved nor considered practical. Independent walking was accomplished in physiotherapy. however an electric wheelchair remains the only functional means of mobility. CONCLUSION: The rehabilitation is described in detail to assist those managing such a rare and complex case.- - - - - - - - - - ranking = 1keywords = amputee (Clic here for more details about this article) |
2/4. Prosthetic rehabilitation in bilateral high above elbow amputation.rehabilitation in patients with bilateral high above elbow amputation presents a considerable prosthetic problem. A patient with high upper arm amputations after a high-voltage injury is presented. He was successfully fitted with multifunctional myoelectric hand prostheses. The problems in rehabilitation of adult bilateral arm amputees are discussed and the value of fitting these patients with electrically powered prostheses is assessed. The balance between technical and clinical aspects is discussed in relation to patient acceptance. In our case good acceptance and functional benefit was noted. The fact is stressed that the bilateral upper extremity amputee can regain considerable physical function with the fitting of suitable prostheses, even if the limb remnants are short and provide little or no function. An extensive team approach at specialized centres will favour the results.- - - - - - - - - - ranking = 0.4keywords = amputee (Clic here for more details about this article) |
3/4. Case report: occupational therapy with a traumatic bilateral shoulder disarticulation amputee. This report describes the application of occupational therapy to a patient with traumatic bilateral shoulder disarticulation. Treatment goals and methods for acute care, preprosthetic training, and prosthetic training are described and illustrated.- - - - - - - - - - ranking = 0.8keywords = amputee (Clic here for more details about this article) |
4/4. Marked bone spur formation in a burn amputee patient. This report presents an unusual case of a lower extremity burn amputee with a marked degree of bone spur formation. A 17-year-old man suffered 56% body surface area mixed-depth electrical and flame burns, necessitating left below knee amputation. He was admitted to a rehabilitation center 3 months postinjury for pylon fitting and gait training. Difficulty was encountered with poor skin tolerance to weight bearing because of the prominent distal bony margins in the stump. x-rays of the stump revealed a marked degree of linear bone spur formation, extending longitudinally from the distal tibia and fibula with multiple cross-bridges. The spur formation was considered an extensive bony exostosis of unclear etiology. Surgical revision was elected to obtain a stump more suitable for prosthetic tolerance, and to avoid a bulky "bypass" prosthesis. This stump revision enabled the patient to attain independent functional prosthetic ambulation. Although there is evidence of some recurrence of bone spur formation, this remains limited and asymptomatic.- - - - - - - - - - ranking = 1keywords = amputee (Clic here for more details about this article) |
