1/14. Occupational contact urticaria and late-phase bronchial asthma caused by compositae pollen in a florist.

    Insect-pollinated members of the plant family Compositae (asteraceae) rarely cause immediate-type hypersensitivity disease; however, this may have quite disabling consequences, which is shown by the case of a 42-year-old female florist. She developed contact urticaria later accompanied by rhinoconjunctivitis and bronchial asthma with maximum obstruction occurring some hours after the end of occupational exposure to the causative Compositae pollens of, for example, dandelions, blazing star, golden rod, yarrow, Aster ssp, chrysanthemums, and marguerite. skin testing revealed immediate-type hypersensitivity to several members of the above-mentioned plant family confirmed by demonstration of specific IgE antibodies. Bronchial provocation testing yielded a positive response with all 4 pollen extracts tested. The patient had to give up work in a flower shop, because sufficient avoidance of airborne inhalant exposure was not considered practical.

2/14. Occupational airborne and hand dermatitis to hop (humulus lupulus) with non-occupational relapses.

    We report a case of a 57-years-old female farmer with occupational airborne dermatitis and hand dermatitis to hop (humulus lupulus). The disease appeared at the age of 46, after 30 years of working with hop without any health problems. The patient had skin erythema of the face, neck and decollete , oedema of the eyelids, conjunctivitis, as well as acute dermatitis of the hands. The symptoms were provoked both by fresh and dried hop, appeared after half-an-hour of working and persisted over 1-2 days. There were no other skin or allergic problems. skin tests were carried out with hop leaves (saline extract: prick positive, patch negative; glycerol extract: prick positive, patch negative) and hop cones (saline extract: prick positive, patch negative; glycerol extract: prick negative, patch positive after 48 and 72 hours). Despite discontinuing work, the patient experienced several relapses of her dermatitis. We identified new sources of hop allergens: a beauty cream and a herbal sedative, both containing hop extract. During the next hop cultivation period it also turned out that sleeping in one bed with her husband was provoking relapses of the patient's dermatitis. The husband admitted that sometimes he felt too tired to wash thoroughly after working on the plantation. Our case shows that connubial contacts with husband working in the same workplace may cause relapses of occupational dermatitis. To our knowledge, this is the first report on the concurrent occupational and connubial dermatitis to hop.

3/14. formaldehyde-negative allergic contact dermatitis from melamine-formaldehyde resin.

    Melamine-formaldehyde resin (MFR) is used as a textile finish, in tableware, in surface coatings, and in glues in the furniture and wood industry. MFR is considered to be an infrequent sensitizer. Contact allergy to MFR is often combined with formaldehyde allergy. patients allergic to textile finish often react to MFR, although other finishes are nowadays more commonly used. Besides allergy to textile finish, allergic contact dermatitis from MFR has been described in workers in composite production and in an orthopaedic plaster technician. To our knowledge, there are no previous reports of contact allergy in the plywood industry from MFR. We describe 3 cases of occupational allergic contact dermatitis from MFR without contact allergy to formaldehyde, 1 in the plywood industry, 1 in the production of melamine-laminated chipboard and 1 in laboratory work.

4/14. Allergic contact sensitization to the fungicide maneb.

    Three cases of contact dermatitis caused by maneb, manganous-ethylene-bis (dithiocarbamate), are described. maneb is used as an agricultural fungicide, and is also used in spraying solutions in horticulture and in flower shops. Patch testing with maneb-related compounds revealed no regular pattern of cross sensitization.

5/14. acrylates induced rhinitis and contact dermatitis.

    acrylates are a well-known cause of occupational contact dermatitis due to its widespread use in several settings such as dentistry, orthopaedic surgery, graphic industry and cosmetics. We describe the case of a manicurist who developed occupational rhinitis and allergic contact dermatitis induced by the application of acrylic-sculptured nails.

6/14. Occupational contact dermatitis from rhodium and cobalt.

    We report a case of occupational allergic contact dermatitis from rhodium sulphate and cobalt chloride in a 29-year-old woman working in a goldsmith's workshop. The relevance and source of sensitization to these metals in our patient is described, and the literature on the subject reviewed.

7/14. alstroemeria. A new and potent allergen for florists.

    alstroemeria (Peruvian or Inca lily) has found particular favor because of its beauty and durability. However, it may induce a dermatitis so severe that workers have to change jobs. The dermatitis is chronic, with fissuring at the tips of the fingers bilaterally. Itching is often a less prominent symptom. Preventative measures are of little benefit, and many floral shops are vanishing the plant.

8/14. Dermatophytoses as occupational dermatoses in industrialized countries. Report on two cases from Munich.

    Although interest in dermatophytoses as occupational dermatoses nowadays focuses on developing countries, pertinent cases are still also seen in industrialized countries. Two recent cases from Munich are reported in which trichophyton verrucosum had been acquired by a cattle farmer and microsporum canis by a veterinary surgeon from a pet cat.

9/14. Contact dermatitis to methyl methacrylate.

    2 cases of contact dermatitis to methyl methacrylate monomer are presented. The patients are nurses who mixed bone cement at orthopedic operations. During the procedure, they used 2 pairs of gloves (latex). Butyl rubber gloves are recommended for methyl methacrylate monomer to avoid sensitization and/or cumulative irritant contact dermatitis on the hands.

10/14. Occupational dermatitis associated with straw itch mites (Pyemotes ventricosus).

    A 1981 outbreak of dermatitis in Austin, Tex, was traced to occupational exposure to wheat infested with the straw itch mite, Pyemotes ventricosus; the wheat was being sold for decorative purposes by an imported-goods store located on the second floor of a large, modern, shopping mall complex. In addition to an extensive varicelliform skin eruption, one employee also had chills, fever, malaise, diarrhea, and anorexia associated with her exposure to these mites. The straw itch mite has been associated with several large epidemics of dermatitis during the 19th and 20th centuries. This outbreak is the third reported in texas since 1961. physicians should consider the possibility of straw itch mite infestations of products brought into the home or places of employment when they observe patients with a varicelliform or chigger-bite-like dermatitis, which may be accompanied by constitutional symptoms.
