1/3. skin cancer caused by grenz rays.

A 30-year-old woman developed chronic radiodermatitis and five squamous cell carcinomas within 7 years following a 16-year period of repeated grenz irradiations given to her psoriasis. The estimated cumulative dose of grenz radiation was approximately 3,000 rads (r) to each treated area. This case, illustrating a rather underestimated carcinogenic potential of grenz rays, is interpreted in light of the available literature on the subject. The technical bases of grenz ray therapy are also briefly reviewed.

2/3. erythema dyschromicum perstans.

A 29-year-old woman from Trinidad experienced the rapid onset of extensive lesions characteristic of erythema dyschromicum perstans following an x-ray study using orally administered contrast. Eleven months later a skin biopsy specimen showed few epidermal changes but extensive incontinence of melanin pigment and marked dilatation of lymphatics in the superficial dermis. Results of a systemic evaluation were normal. The available data on this disease are analyzed and conclusions offered regarding its nature and causes.

3/3. Industrial Grenz ray overexposure: report of a case.

A case of accidental industrial exposure to a single large dose of ultrasoft (Grenz) x-rays is reported. Certain inferences can be made by estimating average skin target dosage, average kilovoltage, milliamperage and duration of exposure. From these data the quality and skin depth dosage of the ray can be tentatively estimated. Comparison of these figures with known biological phenomena such as immediate x-ray burn reaction, late cutaneous sequelae and temporary epilation permits a reasonable estimate of probable skin surface dosage and prognosis.
