1/5. Extensive palliative surgery for advanced mesothelioma of the tunica vaginalis.

Malignant mesothelioma of the tunica vaginalis is a rare tumor managed principally by radical surgical resection. Chemotherapy and radiotherapy have limited efficacy. We report on a 67-year-old man with severe debilitation from multiple scrotal and inguinal recurrences of a malignant mesothelioma originating in the right tunica vaginalis. Local pain from extensive tumor spread prevented ambulation. Aggressive surgical debridement (total penectomy and scrotectomy) and perineal urethrostomy afforded the patient significant improvement in his quality of life before he finally died of the disease 3 years after diagnosis.

2/5. magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) in penile metastases of extragenitourinary cancers.

BACKGROUND: The aim of present study is to evaluate the efficacy of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) in different types of penile metastases. MATERIALS AND methods: In this report, we present three cases of penile metastases that have been developed secondary to extragenitourinary malignancies. Two of them did not have any primary malignancy history. RESULTS: Penile biopsies were performed in all patients and metastatic penile tumours were found due to extragenitourinary malignancies. Penile MRI was performed before biopsies. The findings of MRI were correlated with histopathologic diagnosis. Moreover, penile MRI was found to be more sensitive in the evaluation of the lesions than ultrasonography. CONCLUSION: MRI can be accepted as a reliable non-invasive method for the evaluation of the extent of penile metastases and involvement of tunica albuginea or urethral.

3/5. Cytology of mesothelioma of the tunica vaginalis metastatic to the lung.

The case of a 63-year-old man with malignant mesothelioma of the tunica vaginalis testis confirmed by electron microscopy is presented. The tumor recurred in the scrotal skin and subsequently metastasized to the inguinal and retroperitoneal lymph nodes. Four and a half years after the original diagnosis, pulmonary metastases were discovered by cytologic examination of bronchial washings and confirmed by transbronchial lung biopsy. The cytologic features of the metastatic malignant mesothelial cells are described and compared to those of mesothelioma cells in body cavity fluids. The role of cytology in the early detection of such tumors is discussed.

4/5. Malignant papillary mesothelioma of tunica vaginalis testis.

A malignant papillary mesothelioma of the tunica vaginalis testis with retroperitoneal lymph node and pulmonary metastases is reported in a seventy-seven-year-old man. Electron microscopy of a local recurrence documented its mesothelial origin. The clinical and pathologic features of these rare neoplasms are discussed.

5/5. Malignant mesothelioma of tunica vaginalis testis.

A case of biphasic malignant mesothelioma of the tunica vaginalis occurring in a sixty-four-year-old man is described. The tumor metastasized widely and led to the patient's death two and one-half years after diagnosis. review of the literature revealed 7 cases of malignant mesothelioma of tunica vaginalis. These tumors appeared highly aggressive with early onset of metastasis. Histologically, the tumors may be epithelial, fibrous, or biphasic. In contrast to the benign variants of mesotheliomas, these tumors often show significant nuclear atypia, mitotic activity, and invasion of the epididymis, spermatic cord, lymphatic spaces, or the fibrous tissue of the tunica.
