/60. Malignant mesothelioma of the tunica vaginalis testis: a report of two cases and review of literature. Two cases of rare malignant mesothelioma of tunica vaginalis testis are presented. Both cases were advanced on clinical and radiological studies. One patient was treated with surgical excision followed by chemotherapy and radiotherapy and the other patient was treated with surgery and chemotherapy. Despite aggressive therapy both the patients died within 18 months of treatment. review of the literature with suggested treatment protocol is presented. The response of malignant mesothelioma to chemotherapy and radiotherapy is poor as indicated by both of our cases. Initial aggressive surgery and adjuvant procedures are necessary soon after diagnosis to achieve long-term survival.- - - - - - - - - - ranking = 1keywords = tunica (Clic here for more details about this article) |
/60. Malignant mesothelioma of the tunica vaginalis: a case with an unusually indolent course following radical orchidectomy and radiotherapy.Malignant mesothelioma (malignant adenomatoid tumour) of the tunica vaginalis testis is a very rare neoplasm with highly aggressive biological behaviour. Treatment is difficult, and widespread local invasion and/or metastatic disease at presentation are associated with a poor prognosis. In this case report we describe for the first time a patient who, despite presenting with locally advanced disease, remains well 10 years after diagnosis and treatment with radical orchidectomy and high dose radiotherapy.- - - - - - - - - - ranking = 1keywords = tunica (Clic here for more details about this article) |
/60. Malignant mesothelioma of the tunica vaginalis testis: report of a case.We describe herein the case of a 68-year-old man with malignant mesothelioma of the tunica vaginalis testis. The pathological diagnosis was based upon the clinical findings, gross and microscopic morphology, and special stains. Malignant mesothelioma is a rare tumor associated with asbestos exposure that can be effectively treated with orchidectomy via an inguinal approach.- - - - - - - - - - ranking = 1keywords = tunica (Clic here for more details about this article) |
/60. Benign papillary mesothelioma of the tunica vaginalis testis. We report a case of benign mesothelioma of the tunica vaginalis testis in a 69-year-old man who presented with a 4-month history of scrotal swelling. A polypoid pedunculated nodule, 1.5 cm in diameter, was found near the head of the right epididymis. Histologically, the tumor exhibited features characteristic of a well-differentiated papillary mesothelioma. The mesothelial origin of this tumor was further supported by immunohistochemical analysis. The tumor cells exhibited nuclear p53 protein accumulation, despite the benign histologic findings and a 3-year uneventful follow-up after resection. A polymerase chain reaction analysis for simian virus 40 dna was negative. The papillary configuration seen in this tumor is uncommon for this site, inasmuch as benign mesotheliomas of the tunica vaginalis testis usually exhibit an adenomatous pattern. One should be aware of this pattern, and benignity should be mentioned in the pathologic report to prevent overtreatment. In addition, positive p53 immunohistochemical staining should not be taken automatically as evidence for malignancy in this type of lesion.- - - - - - - - - - ranking = 1.2keywords = tunica (Clic here for more details about this article) |
/60. Primary malignant gonadal mesotheliomas and asbestos.AIMS: The clinicopathological, immunohistochemical and aetiological aspects, with respect to asbestos, of seven primary gonadal mesotheliomas (three intratesticular, four ovarian) are described and compared. These tumours are extremely rare, poorly described and the knowledge of their natural history is very limited. methods AND RESULTS: The cases were collated from the UK health and safety Executive mesothelioma Register over a 24-year period (1968-91). Primary mesotheliomas of the tunica vaginalis and ovary comprised 0. 09% (10 cases) and 0.03% (three cases) of mesothelioma deaths, respectively. No primary intratesticular (non-tunica vaginalis) malignant mesotheliomas have been described. In this study, we present seven (three intratesticular, four ovarian) primary malignant gonadal mesotheliomas. In both genders the tumours show a similar age distribution (with median onset in the sixth decade), a similar association with asbestos (in approximately 50% cases), a diverse histological spectrum (with predominantly tubulopapillary epithelial subtype tumours) and an immunophenotype that is comparable with malignant pleural and peritoneal mesothelioma. The clinical course appears variable (mean, 26 months; range, 9-50 months). All tumours in the study presented as localized masses and their prognosis appeared more favourable than that of diffuse pleural and peritoneal cases. CONCLUSIONS: An awareness of the existence of these rare forms of malignant mesothelioma is important to prevent misdiagnosis. immunohistochemistry has an important role in confirmation of the diagnosis. The accurate diagnosis of primary gonadal mesothelioma has potentially important medicolegal compensation considerations as a significant proportion of these cases are associated with asbestos.- - - - - - - - - - ranking = 0.4keywords = tunica (Clic here for more details about this article) |
/60. Epididymal rhabdomyoma: report of a case, including histologic and immunohistochemical findings.Genital rhabdomyoma is a rare tumor of skeletal muscle origin that is usually found in the vulvar area of young women. The English literature contains only 2 previous case reports involving men, both of whom were 19 years old. One of these lesions originated in the tunica vaginalis of the testis, and the other originated in the prostate gland. We present the clinical, histologic, and immunohistochemical findings of an epididymal rhabdomyoma in a 20-year-old man. To our knowledge, this is the first such case reported in this location.- - - - - - - - - - ranking = 0.2keywords = tunica (Clic here for more details about this article) |
/60. Case of mesothelioma of the tunica vaginalis testis with characteristic findings on ultrasonography and magnetic resonance imaging.A case of mesothelioma of the right tunica vaginalis testis in a 32-year-old man is reported. Trans-scrotal ultrasonography revealed hydrocele and multiple nodular masses measuring 1.0-4.5 cm in size attached to the parietal vaginal layer. magnetic resonance imaging demonstrated more clearly nodular masses with irregular surfaces lined on the hydrocele cavity. Histologic diagnosis of the tumor when orchiectomized was mesothelioma. The patient has been free of disease for approximately 3 years since the treatment.- - - - - - - - - - ranking = 1keywords = tunica (Clic here for more details about this article) |
/60. Papillary serous carcinoma of the tunica vaginalis testis. This is a case report of a testicular papillary serous carcinoma of ovarian type (PSCOT) diagnosed in a 50-year-old man. The tumor presented in the form of multiple papillary exophytic excrescencies on the visceral tunica vaginalis testis lining the inner surface of a hydrocele sac. The tumor was histologically a papillary serous carcinoma with numerous psammoma bodies, indistinguishable from similar tumors arising on the surface of the ovary. Following the tumor's surgical removal, the patient was treated with the same drugs used to treat ovarian serous carcinomas, and he is alive two years after the initial diagnosis. PSCOT must be distinguished from mesothelioma of the tunica vaginalis testis, a tumor with a most unfavorable prognosis. As shown here, immunohistochemical findings can be useful for formulating the correct diagnosis of PSCOT.- - - - - - - - - - ranking = 1.2keywords = tunica (Clic here for more details about this article) |
/60. Malignant peritoneal mesothelioma in an inguinal hernial sac: an unusual presentation.Malignant peritoneal mesothelioma, which is a rare neoplasm, usually presents with abdominal complaints. Though such tumours have been reported from tunica vaginalis testis presenting as para-testicular mass, there is only one documented case of the tumour arising from the inguinal hernial sac. In this paper, we are reporting a rare presentation of this tumour.- - - - - - - - - - ranking = 0.2keywords = tunica (Clic here for more details about this article) |
/60. diagnosis of malignant mesothelioma of the tunica vaginalis testis by ultrasound-guided fine-needle aspiration.Malignant mesothelioma of the tunica vaginalis testis is a very rare tumor that is not usually diagnosed until surgery is undertaken. In only a few cases has the correct diagnosis been obtained preoperatively by cytologic examination of fluid from the hydrocele. We describe a case of mesothelioma of the tunica vaginalis testis that was suspected on sonography because of the presence of a hydrocele and focal nodularities. The diagnosis was confirmed preoperatively by ultrasound-guided fine-needle aspiration cytology aimed at 1 of the focal nodularities. Our patient was an 85-year-old man with concomitant cancer of the sigmoid colon; because of his age and the spread of his colon cancer, we did not remove the scrotal lesion. We recommend consideration of ultrasound-guided fine-needle aspiration cytology of the solid masses instead of the fluid from the hydrocele in cases of suspected malignant mesothelioma of the tunica vaginalis testis.- - - - - - - - - - ranking = 1.4keywords = tunica (Clic here for more details about this article) |
