1/4. Complications of varicella zoster.

    Primary infection with varicella zoster is characterzed by a generalized vesicular rash usually without significant systemic illness. Encephalitis, pneumonitis, pancreatitis, nephritis, Reye and Guillan-Barre syndrome transvers myelitis, myocarditis have been reported before, but there is not any case having all these system to be involved during the same infection in a sequential manner ending up with multiorgan failure. We wanted to represent 21-month-old boy had a multiorgan failure due to varicella zoster infection.

2/4. An unusual varicella zoster infection complicated by purpura fulminans and multiorgan failure in a healthy infant.

    The case is reported of a 2-y-old boy who developed purpura fulminans, meningoencephalitis, pneumonia complicated by adult respiratory distress syndrome and acute renal failure after varicella. These complications of varicella are extremely rare in a healthy infant.

3/4. Cold autoagglutinins with anti-Pr specificity associated with fresh varicella infection.

    Cold agglutinins with the rare anti-Pr specificity were identified in an adult patient with fresh varicella infection. The antibody was of the IgM kappa type with subspecificity anti-Pr3d and caused a haemolytic episode in the patient. In the only previously reported case in which cold agglutinins were associated with varicella infection, the antibody specificity was also anti-Pr.

4/4. Varicella-related deaths among adults--united states, 1997.

    During January-April 1997, state health departments reported three fatal cases of varicella (chickenpox) to CDC. All three cases occurred in young adult women who were unvaccinated and susceptible to varicella and who were infected by exposure to unvaccinated preschool-aged children with typical cases of varicella. This report summarizes these three cases, which indicate that preventable varicella-related deaths continue to occur in the united states. In addition, the report re-emphasizes the recommended strategies for preventing varicella.
