/9. schistosomiasis of the urinary bladder. A case report. The case is reported of a man with schistosomiasis of the bladder which gave rise to non-gonococcal urethritis. diagnosis was confirmed by finding the characteristic terminal-spined schistosoma haematobium ova in the urine deposit. The cystoscopic appearances further confirmed the disease and its stage. The patient responded satisfactorily to treatment although the follow-up period was short.- - - - - - - - - - ranking = 1keywords = urinary (Clic here for more details about this article) |
/9. neisseria meningitidis in specimens from urogenital sites. Is increased awareness necessary?neisseria meningitidis serogroups B type 2 and Y were isolated from urogenital specimens from three heterosexual patients. The first patient was a young man with the clinical signs and microscopic findings of a typical gonococcal urethritis. The second was a middle-aged woman with cervicitis, in whom neither neisseria gonorrhoeae nor chlamydia trachomatis were demonstrated by culture. In the third patient, a young woman, N. meningitidis was associated with cervicitis, acute salpingitis, and peritonitis. The patients' clinical symptoms responded quickly to antibiotic treatment. Meningococci of the same serogroup/serotype as the index cases were demonstrated in two of the sexual consorts in pharyngeal specimens but not in genitourinary specimens. Orogenital sexual practice seemed to be the most likely route of transmission. During the period of this study (August 1989-March 1990), the three meningococcal strains observed at the authors' laboratory represented 20% of the total number of urogenital isolates of pathogenic Neisseria. A greater awareness of this problem from medical, diagnostic, epidemiologic, and legal viewpoints is therefore needed.- - - - - - - - - - ranking = 0.25keywords = urinary (Clic here for more details about this article) |
/9. CDC group HB-5 as a cause of genitourinary infections in adults.Isolates from five patients with genitourinary infections diagnosed over a 7-week period were identified as CDC group HB-5. The organisms caused clinical presentations of pelvic inflammatory disease in three women and urethritis in the only male in the series. The remaining patient received surgical treatment for a Bartholin gland abscess. Since the clinical and temporal presentations were remarkable and the questions of sexual mode of transmission and strain relatedness were of concern, the five strains were examined further by multilocus enzyme electrophoresis and ribosomal dna typing. overall, the five clinical isolates were more closely related to each other than to the control strains. This is the first report describing genitourinary infections caused by group HB-5. While the pathophysiology of group HB-5 infections remains to be fully elucidated, the possibility that this organism may be sexually transmitted deserves further study.- - - - - - - - - - ranking = 1.5keywords = urinary (Clic here for more details about this article) |
/9. Autodigestion of the glans penis and urethra by activated transplant pancreatic exocrine enzymes.A case of synchronous kidney and pancreas transplantation in which a whole pancreas graft had been drained to the urinary bladder is discussed. On the 137th postoperative day, the patient presented with symptomatic balanitis and urethritis. Documented enzymatic activation of the trypsinogen/chymotrypsinogen, which is not present in symptom-free control patients, was thus thought to be responsible for these symptoms. Conversion to enteric drainage by means of a Roux-en-Y loop resulted in resolution of both symptoms and urinary enzymatic activation. Recurrent urinary tract infections were thought to be the most likely mechanism responsible for these findings.- - - - - - - - - - ranking = 0.75keywords = urinary (Clic here for more details about this article) |
/9. wegener granulomatosis. Unusual cause of necrotizing urethritis. We report a case of wegener granulomatosis presenting as a destructive urethral mass. The initial clinical impression was carcinoma, and a urinary diverting procedure was considered before the correct diagnosis was established. The importance of recognizing this unusual disease and its dramatic response to appropriate therapy are emphasized.- - - - - - - - - - ranking = 0.25keywords = urinary (Clic here for more details about this article) |
/9. Postvoid film of intravenous pyelogram in diagnosis of urethral diverticulum.Urethral diverticulum is a correctable cause of lower urinary tract symptoms in women. It has been found to be present in from 1.85 to 4.7 per cent of all females. The postvoid film of the intravenous urogram (IVP) is the simplest and least invasive method available to diagnose urethral diverticula. It should be a routine part of the IVP in women with lower urinary tract symptoms.- - - - - - - - - - ranking = 0.5keywords = urinary (Clic here for more details about this article) |
/9. Chronic cystitis and urethritis associated with ureaplasmal and mycoplasmal infection in primary hypogammaglobulinaemia.Six of 58 patients with primary hypogammaglobulinaemia developed chronic urethritis and/or cystitis. We have some evidence that this complication may be caused by infection with strains Rof ureaplasma urealyticum. This is important because ureaplasmas are usually resistant to most antibiotics routinely used to treat lower urinary tract infections. It appears that hypogammaglobulinaemic patients develop less localised and more severe ureaplasmal infections than immunocompetent subjects, which indicates that antibodies are important in controlling the growth of these organisms in the bladder and urethra.- - - - - - - - - - ranking = 0.25keywords = urinary (Clic here for more details about this article) |
/9. Acute urinary retention secondary to urethral inflammation from a vaginal contraceptive suppository in a 17-year-old boy.We report the case of a 17-year-old boy who developed acute urinary retention following unprotected intercourse. His partner employed for the first time a nonoxynol-9-based commercial vaginal contraceptive insert. During intercourse the patient felt severe burning pain in the urethra. He was subsequently unable to void. Flexible cystourethroscopy revealed gross mucosal erythema and inflammation in the distal urethra and navicular fossa. We discuss the clinical management and review relevant literature.- - - - - - - - - - ranking = 1.25keywords = urinary (Clic here for more details about this article) |
/9. Idiopathic anterior urethritis in prepubertal and pubertal boys: pathology and clues to etiology.OBJECTIVES: Records were reviewed to examine the common features of boys with noninfectious anterior urethritis, and to describe the underlying pathology. methods: Five cases of anterior urethritis with features typical of this syndrome are reviewed. RESULTS: These cases demonstrate the typical appearance and in 1 case the pathologic diagnosis of squamous metaplasia of the bulbar urethra. CONCLUSIONS: Prepubertal urethrorrhagia is associated with squamous metaplasia of the urethra. The tendency to stricture formation may precede instrumentation of the urinary tract.- - - - - - - - - - ranking = 0.25keywords = urinary (Clic here for more details about this article) |
