optic nerve thinning

Post by worried mom » Thu Oct 20, 2011 4:08 am

my 7 year old son has developed blind spots in his left eye. they have been there for about 2 mths. they are always there. he went to the ophthalmologist where they said that it appears that his optic nerve in the left eye is thinning. after multiple visual field tests, ultrasounds, visual screens, and numerous other tests, we still have no answers. over the past 3 weeks he has also been having eye pain only in the left eye, but it is not constant, it comes and goes. I have started to research on my own, and we will be going for a second opinion soon. the dr. keeps putting off doing an mri, for reasons unknown to me. has anyone had any diagnosis with these symptoms? I was thinking maybe MS, but that involves inflammation not thinning of the optic nerve, and Im not sure if those would likely be mistaken with each other. any help would be GREATLY appreciated!
