asthma and emphysema

Hi, So I'm 45 years old. I was a pack a day smoker till 3 months ago but I never had smokers cough or anything. 3 years ago I used to go to the gym like 4 to 5 time a week and workout, 2 years ago I walked 10 to 15 miles a day, had a full time job where I was active, reaching, walking, bending ect. 1 year ago I had to go for shoulder surgery a couple days prior I had blood work a chest X-ray and EKG to make sure I was healthy for the surgery, Surgery (partial shoulder replacement) went well I was told and I was sent home the next day with a follow up visit in a week. That night I was having some trouble with shortness of breath which seemed to progress over the next few days but I figured I would talk to the doctor during my follow up. Doctor sent me back to hospital for another chest X-ray then sent me to a kidney and lung specialist so between the two of them I was treated for about 5 months for a virus in my lungs that they thought I got from the breathing tube during surgery, they said about 1percent get it. So lots of expensive meds did nothing and then I moved back to Jersey where I spent 3 to 5 days in a heart and lung hospital a couple times because I couldn’t breath and actually thought I was going to die. So now I see a pulmonary doctor who says is not a viral infection you has asthma and emphazema. So now I have been being treated for this with tons of prednisone and breathing treatments and have gained almost 40 pounds, Well on top of this for a few months I have been asking my wife all the time if she smells the exhaust fumes because they seem to be all around my face to the point where I taste them and my eyes burn, we after months of us both thinking I’m nuts I finally found something on the internet about it, it’s called Phantosmia and it talks about respiratory infections making a lobe in your brain seizure which makes your olfactory glands hallucinate smells. Anyway my question here is can I seem very healthy and active one day , have surgery, and the next day seem like(or I guess actually be) I’m dieing.
