What causes adrenal gland retaining too much sodium in the body?

It's the most common problem of high BP in 1/4 population and
not all family's members have hypertension from this, so is it
pathological disease? thanks.

The body may be releasing too much of the hormone Aldosterone. Aldosterone causes sodium reabsorption throughout the body, and since kidneys are our bodies filtering systems, the reabsorption takes place there.

There may just be a hormonal imbalance, which should be checked out by a doctor too. I'm only offering one possibility, so there may be more.  (+ info)

What is the prognosis of stage IV colon cancer that spread to adrenal gland?

My friend has been through chemo already, had portion of colon removed, and had spot on liver and lungs. All of this was taken care of and now she has a new tumor on her adrenal gland

Stage 4 generally means the primary cancer has spread to distant areas of the body. Stage 4 is the least curable stage of cancer. Never give up hope.
Although a cancer may not be totally cured, it can be held back by chemotherapy, surgery, radiation therapy-depending on the exact type of cancer and where tumors are. Ask your friend to consult with her physician and cancer specialist-oncologist.
As the adrenal gland is an endocrine gland-she may also wish to consult with an endocrinologist-but first have here see her cancer specialist-oncologist for such a referral.  (+ info)

Can anyone tell me about an adrenal gland disorder? I recently found out after takingg blood pressure?

medicine for over 10 years (hypertension) that the cause was my adrenal glands. Does anyone know any information about the function or treatment of this gland? Please help I don't want to be placed on medication that will have some bad effects.

Most causes of hypertension are called essential- in that the doctors have no idea what's causing the hypertension other than lifestyle factors.

You're describing primary hypertension, where the cause is known. In terms of the adrenal glands i'll try to explain as best i can.

The adrenals are responsible for secreting Anti Diuretic Hormone ADH- this regulates the amount of water in the body. If there is a malfunction of this part of the adrenals they will secrete too much ADH and fluid will build up in the blood supply, raising the blood pressure.

The tablets you're on are probably either diuretics, or ADH inhibitors.  (+ info)
